  • We speak about how to view children, what they are, and what they can ideally be. We also speak about why parents matter, exposing kids to the world, how to think about peers, the strained relationship between men and women, the new horizon of surrogacy, and the importance of rituals in the lives of children and everyone else and more.
Tara Ann Thieke is a homemaker and writer. She’s on Twitter at @taraannthieke.

I used to watch so many of these episodes on RUclips but have since started listening in the podcast format. That being said, I miss the comments section and interacting with other "Subversive Types." This was a great episode and Tara is a thoughtful and intelligent woman.
She mentions LARPING in your rituals until they become true, and she's absolutely correct: these rituals are beneficial to your children. You're establishing harmony and natural rhythms. The world (whether purposely or not) is designed to atomize us and keep us from forming these meaningful bonds. My act of "subversion" is to give my family spiritually rich traditions and memories to cherish for the rest of their lives. It's tough to find people to stand with you, but not impossible. I'm heartened at how many people actually are touched and delighted to be asked to partake in these things.
    Great talk, Alex!

I have scoured the book shelves for a representation of motherhood that is neither romanticism or “bad mommy, idgaf, just rolling around in my sweat pants, real talk”. It’s so hard to represent what being a mother is in all it’s glory without succumbing to the two extremes. It’s my biggest philosophical conundrum right now, since becoming a mother 4 weeks ago. I want to write it myself but I think all my brain cells went to developing my sons huge head. Alex how the hell do you remain so eloquent pregnant af? Haha
