Being Cheltenham born and bred this for me is very meaningful to see and look back on and remember.I love my town with all my heart. It is so beautiful here with plenty to do and we are surrounded by gorgeous countryside too.
I remember when you could drive all through Cheltenham...outside Cav House and around boots corner, I was born 1981.....the Regency buildings still look the same today!. Thanks for the upload!
Being born in Cheltenham in 1948,growing up there, until 1969,when I emigrated to Australia, this brings back many memories. A lovely town to grow up in,have been back a few times, and find it not so nice now. Anybody remember Geraldines, and the Black Tulip? The Grotto,at the Wheatsheaf in Lechampton, The Daffodil,Gaumont,Colesium, Essoldo ect. Also shops like Mac Fisheries, Glostershire Dairy,Sharp And Fishers,Wards,Daniel Meals, ect.
Richard Bullock You're a couple of years ahead of me, I was born in Cheltenham in 1950 and lived there until 1963 when I moved to Winchcombe. Yes, I remember Geraldine's and the Black Tulip and stores including, Wards, Daniel Neil's, and Shires & Lances. As for other shops and eateries, how about the Cadena (Promenade and High Street), Brunners (Clarence Street) and even Boots had a restaurant. Remember all the cinemas too plus the ABC formerly the Regal all of which are now gone and replaced by a multiplex down the Lower High Street where the Whitbread Brewery once stood. I moved from Gloucestershire to South Wales almost 20 years ago and have been back to Cheltenham only a few times since them. Some parts are little changed and bring back fond memories so it was great seeing this video, but there are some parts that have changed out of all recognition, and not all for the better. Even so, I still feel a connection with my birthplace and visiting always brings memories of my childhood flooding back.
Hi Atlantic, nice to bring back a few memories, and thankyou for you reply. I worked for Whitbreads, when it was called West Country Breweries in the 1960s, around 1964 to 1965,there were still a lot of pubs in the town at that time, sadly many have now gone.I recall Cavendish House having many departments, namely a furrier, hosiery (stockings),and stationery. A couple of more names now disappeared, Banks, books and stationery, Timothy Whites, chemist,Chappells, delicatessen, Gloucestershire Dairy,Lawleys, china,Tillys, crumpets, and of course Woolworths, to name a few. Happy, and carefree days.
The massacre of one of the oldest buildings in Cheltenham, The plough Hotel and it's old arched coach entrance (1.46) was a great mistake. It should have been incorporated into the design of the Regent arcade which is soulless. The Strand is shabby now when once there was Woollies next to it and cafe tables and Chairs to brighten it up. Cav house is a shadow of what it once was with that beautiful food hall. Nice to see a world before mobile phones when people talked to each other in Person and actually looked up rather than down.
I remember tillies crumpets the stone house the dances in town hall the Victoria Inn in hanover Street I lived right next door to the Victoria Inn St Paul's church
@@Traceishere Yeah, cos Cheltenham is FULL of people from outside borders. Come on, the demographic is still 99.99% white middle-class. Your argument might stand some weight in London but, nah, if you want to blame anyone or anything, perhaps look at the influx of students when the uni was built, or the decay generally of standards among the youth. The Johnny Foreigner card is too easy.
@5:24 - That cafe' looks VERY familiar - I'm sure that's the place where Dom Joly shot past on a scooter with his huge mobile phone strapped to him ,,,," HELLO !!! WHAT ??? YES, HANDS-FREE, IT'S BRILLIANT !!" (He lives in Cheltenham)
We all stopped calling on God's name. Do you think that England became the country it was solely on self-will? It was Christianity that built that country.
Look at the people they look more respectable than today. Now all i see is half naked ppl jogging and masks everywhere. Brings tear to my eye how its changed.
Andrew Davis my dad lives there and his friends live in Cheltenham and his friends aren’t t***s in hesters way and waddon they are chav central but everywhere else it’s fine
I'm so thankful that I was young and healthy through the 80's and 90's. Beautiful days and beautiful places that will never be the same again.

I lived in Cheltenham from 1963 to 1975, but not very much had changed by 1980. Almost every scene is very familiar and nostalgic. Thank you!

Im 81 too Cheltenham has changed lots
Thank you for this video - what a beautiful sunny day it was back then
I have lived here since the 90s but used to visit in the 70s! It’s very interesting.
This is amazing! Interesting seeing Regent St without the bridge going from the arcade to Cavendish House.

@4:13 - is that Cheltenham College ? - That's where they filmed the 1968 film "IF" with Malcom McDowell !
@2:45 - God, no matter where you were in the UK, you couldn't shoot footage from the early 1980s without a Ford Granada/Cortina hoving into view !
My dad when he was a kid late 60s/early 70s he worked as a cleaner at eagle tower
It’s a reminder that austerity hits having nice things around, as well as good services. It doesn’t take long for it to fall apart.
Crumbs - that's me walking in the upper high street. A nice bit of nostalgia.
Very nolstogic x
So few cars!
Those flares ! They used a lot more cloth to make trousers in those day`s ?
Ahh. When Cheltenham was actually a nice place to live. Where did it all go wrong?
