Part 57: Air Suspension 3 - Compressor, Solenoids & Tank Brackets - 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- Episode 57 of my '76 Mazda Cosmo Restoration picks up exactly where episode 56 ended: fabricating the brackets to mount all the air suspension support components. Here I complete fabrication of the tank, solenoid and compressor brackets. The idea was to create a compact and almost modular installation tucked into the inside of the rear quarter and I am happy with the result.

its crazy i started watching this series when i was 14 years old and here i am, 28 now.
the most frustrating and interesting channel on youtube, always surprises me when i see a new video lol
Same ✅
I started building it when I was 30, and now I'm 44.5. Time does march forward.
@@aaroncake Disregard my assholery. Just carry on. Love ya. ;)

i think i was 20 lol
This is the most relatable build series ever filmed. The reality of what it takes an average working man to chase his passion in his spare time. I enjoy every minute . Thanks Aaron.
Exactly! This is the real world. Working on it when I have time and getting it done at the pace it can be worked on. No behind the scenes team in the background, or hidden sponsors.
The shed got robbed broke me up. But he came back. The Gf inmplanting chip for the door lock... Oh!
@@aaroncakewhat age did you start this? I was 16-17 when I first saw your post on Rx7club. I'm now 34 with my own FC. Heavily used your megasquirt pages and I still run a ms3pro on my 20b! Your posts always motivate me to go do *something* no matter how minor.
Girl friend, not girlfriend, just to clarify. A break-in in something that a person never recovers from. Anyone who has experienced it probably knows the feeling. Just the way you are reminded of it every time you double check the door is locked, every time you look through the window bars, every time there is a motion even notification from the cameras. And the meth'd out criminals who destroy property are now being described as "vulnerable citizens".
I started this project on Sept. 11th, 2010. Glad I could help on the 20B project. Never myself wired a Megasquirt on a 20B.
We are here together 17years? still...gentlemans... dont forget look away, while Iron cake is welding. thumbs up.
To think when this project is finally finished, someone is going to stumble across the channel and will be able to binge watch the whole thing.
Its the most wanted notification.
Nice that you could work more time on the car. The real good YT stuff is becoming rare, and you are the best and rarest
Thank you! Yes, it seems that most of the recommended content are creators just pumping out as many videos as possible containing 90% narration over 10 minutes to cover 2 minutes of actual work. I know this, because years ago my RUclips rep (back when I still had one who would actually CALL ME ON THE PHONE) basically told me I needed to do the same.
So, been watching talking on and off with you since early Forum days. And still love to see vids. At 57 as of 2024 (yes this might be on the net for a while) love to watch your videos and appreciate the overkill.. and good practices you use. So much of what you do may seem overkill to many but the younger guys watching this will learn good solid techniques for future builds they do. Also.. Thank you for the MS3Pro write up years ago. Was a wonderful reference for my first MS3 build when needing to do a install for my test mule. Thanks again and keep plugging along.
Is there a record for longest RUclips build series? This is a serious contender... Top job.
Project Binky....No conclusion yet..Think they gave up tbh.
@@69Phuket sh
I also think they gave up.....
Bro . Aaroncakes has a 17 year old video of this Cosmo project. He is the King.
I hope they didn't give up. Haven't been any updates for a while though.
Super. Thanks for taking the time to film and cut the progress for us. It is always good to see that you are still working on the Mazda. Even though it is not very often. Best wishes to you.
Thank you!
You and Sarah-N-Tuned are the best on youtube
Thank you! Just looked up Sarah-N-Tuned. Another you might be interested in is Hanna's Bug. A young woman restoring a VW Beetle as her first project. Unfortunately she just stopped one day so we will never see the end of the project.
I can't believe that I been watching and waiting this project since 14 years ago until now and only god knows how much time you need to finish this car
But what I'm sure about is how fast day's go
14 years go like blink of eye
I think I picked this series 8 years ago, I can't believe how fast it goes too. I'm almost 50 so maybe I'll be around long enough to see it finished...lol

Every time when I think….where is that guy with the Mazda. And then a new video pops up 😂
It's midnight here. I'm grateful that I can end my day with your video.
Love the video series, been following for over 10 years.
I hope you still grind on in your own pace, so you end up with a project you are happy with.
Damn dude...I was just randomly having you on my mind last week
I'm....flattered.
That's what she said
For so long, viewers (young at the time) been saying why is it taking so long. It should had been down years ago. Fast forward to now. We're appreciating the journey.
I think the people who say that have never built anything.
Being British. You're the the only weird Imperial thing I can relate to. Nice fettling. ;)
Hi Aaroncake, perfect timing for me. Used to watch all your vids. I was restoring my TR6 (and had a vid series too) and have been busy with life, work, kids, h.s. sports, and Ive been dying to get back on the project. Inspirational!
Glad to know I have been motivation!

Comment for the engagement
this is my contractually obliged engagement-boosting comment
Such spectacular work you've been doing! So impressive!
I have a 1977 RX-5 Cosmo and '76 parts car, that I've been wanting to restore for over 30 years. They've just been sitting there... waiting. I'm afraid after this much time, I'm just going to have to call the Kidney foundation to tow them away. ☹
I wish you all the best, Cheers
So you know that after leaving that comment I'm going to ask: roughly where geographically are these cars?
@@aaroncake Edmonton. Check your email, I sent you photos. 🙂
thank you sir
Every episode is like, what am I going to learn today 🤔🙂👍🏽
I'm thinking of re-teaching myself C++ in order to program an arduino uno R4 to read a 0-12V pulse signal from a flow valve, then send an analog 0-5V linear equivalent signal to my MS3PRO. Let's see what you come up with 🙂
Why waste an analog channel? There are only a few on the MS3-Pro. Send it via byte of CAN data instead. Honestly, not that much harder than analog. I'm going to have to start doing this as I am out of analog channels on my MS3-Pro. Air suspension pressures will need to be CAN.
super une nouvelle video 😍
Hello my Old Friend its Nice to see you Again :)
When this car is complete im driving to canada so i can see it in person.
I feel like there may be a driving tour in my future. Would make a cool RUclips video. Across Canada and the US.
I’ve been watching another channel with an Australian guy restoring a first gen Cosmo. He was using a copper-based primer for similar spots because it welded better, but he said it wasn’t as durable. Basically it was good enough for inner joints that wouldn’t see direct abrasion or water contact. Maybe that’s worth looking into?
Edit: looks like I need to wait until the end of the video first lol
Watching Notevn too, but I've been watching Aaroncake longer, LoL.
Ohh...Just looked up that channel and subscribed. Looks like the restoration just finished so I have some videos to catch up on. I plan to POR-15 all of the areas underneath that require attention. Stopping short of doing the entire underside because I've done that before and it's not worth it.
The world needs more “TWSS” jokes!
No Nurses Costume?
I am fairly sure Lynnette still has it, so maybe I can borrow it and wear it for the next episode?

@@Carlos.Rivera thanks!
I admit it might be a little bit of a wait for the next one. I've had to attend to other things for the past month.
he had a press.
Hi Aron how are you? i hope your health problems are over, and how is your nurse miss Lynette??, as usual another nice clear video and no half work I hope I can still experience seeing your RX5 complete and ready on the road, I am now 60 and with another 14 years I will be approaching 75, which is an age that is not often reached in my family
Thankfully I am mostly over my COVID-19 experience. Only took about 9 months. Lynnette reports that she is happy.
Hi Aaron just had to say Hi. 👋
This whole series should be studied for OCD
I tried zinc weld through primer first and it didn't like to weld through it unless I cleared a starting point but I found the copper weld through primer didn't have that issue for me. A while back I stumbled across a guy who used an arduino to control a height-sensor-based air ride system on his Audi with what I seem to remembere weere GM sensors. Can't remember the forum or guys name, since it was years ago. I bet some creative Googling will find it ttho.
I had the same problem with the zinc weld through primer so I just got into the habit of using the Dremel to grind it away in the weld area prior to starting the weld, as you did. Good to know the copper is better. Next time I use it I will also try a test piece that I will weld without creating a bare spot. Yes, I have found several open source air suspension controller but most are very early and extremely basic. Land Rover height sensors are very common and inexpensive. Just a 0-5V pot.
I love all the build videos , any updates on Tina how is she running
Not much to update on Tina. Running fine. Actually just spent the entire week last week daily driving the RX-7. Only thing is that the body is decomposing. In a few years, I will have to do something about that. Current plan is to buy a fresh body and swap everything over.
@@aaroncake yeah that would be a good thing hopefully things keep up
I am guessing you are already planning on building your own control scheme. Means it can work the way you want it to.
I am completely on the fence about it. On one hand, I can just buy it off the shelf and hook it up. On the other hand, spending $2000 for what is essentially a 4 channel PID controller that cannot integrate with any other part of the car (ie. automatic lowering of suspension at highway speeds) doesn't thrill me. Yet at the same time, I am not enthusiastic about adding yet more software I have to write for the car. I admit I haven't even touched the dash since it was finished.
watch cake by the ocean
I'm not sure what that means.
The absolute pinnacle of this build was when he referred to something as "lindsay lohaned" 😅
Is it sad I don't remember when I said that?
@aaroncake you did, when explaining some body work was over penetrated 😅
Are you gonna add a drain line to drain water from the air tank
Yes, at some point. Will have to add a bung to the bottom of the tank, and set up a solenoid to automatically purge it.
W00t!!
When will the build go for paint? What's next?
Paint will be one of the absolute last steps because there is still a lot of body work to do and I wouldn't want to have to worry about damaging fresh paint. After the air suspension, I am thinking brakes. Fronts will be easy, rears a little more complicated.
@@aaroncake why are the rear brakes harder??? is that because your RX5 has drum brakes??, I have a 1977 Mazda 121 Cosmo Coupe and it has standard rear disc brakes so there must be a system that can be upgraded yours .
The RX-5 Cosmo are disks as well however a weird drum-disk combination where the drum is the parking brake inside the rotor, and the disks are the service brake. I'll be switching them out for a caliper and disk setup with parking brake integrated into the caliper. Also the axles need to be switched to a 5 lug pattern to match the front.
how do you drain water from the air tank?
Good catch. Currently, there isn't a way. I'll have to add a fitting to the bottom of the tank and use a solenoid to auto-purge it.
with this and that maybe it becomes a little heavy, is stock frame strong enough?
Should be no issue with the stock unibody supporting a few hundred pounds more.
No more heavy than having an average American as passenger
will this be finished before you die :D?
I'm going to assume so, but can anyone truly answer that question? To answer that, I'd have to know the date of my own death. I'll check my crystal ball but that thing has been unreliable for years.
you are seriously overengineering those brackets
I guess it depends. Everything has to stand up to decades of road vibration, as well as the vibration from the air pump itself.
Come on man, spell my name right😂
Did I miss something?!
@aaroncake it's spelled Ørjan Tørsdal. Love your work and horrible humor 🤩 keep up the good work. I've been watching since the start of the build. You and ETCG inspired me into the car business, and now I'm thriving, THANK YOU ❤️
I do truly (no sarcasm) apologize. I can't fix that this episode but have made a note for the next episode. Issue is that Adobe Premiere STILL does not support unicode so I have to "anglosize" the names which special characters to the closest ASCII character. I clearly screwed up on you name. Won't happen in the future. I have a thing about names because I've gone my whole with having to deal with mine.
