I’ve played REMake for twenty years and love it like a part of the family. But watching a newbie playing and getting this confused reminds me how fucking ridiculous this game is.
I've never played this game before but have played the newer ones. Dunkey is right in that probably most of the 'issues' are related to the inventory. You could easily spend an hour running back and forth from your storage to another location having to test what does or doesn't work to open something. I'm pretty sure it's by design and trying to add to the puzzle/mystery factor, but I feel like it could easily devolve into annoyance and players just go play something else and never come back.

Alot of the item usage is incredibly common sense, it isn't point and click game logic where you try random things on random doors, you memorize which doors go on which keys etc. If you backtrack that much due to inventory management that's you being an idiot and being terrible at managing your inventory. Don't keep items on you that you don't need at that moment in time, the game is meticulously designed around this and it's part of why it's so great. Dunkey's just shit at the game.

My favorite of the series has always been Resident Evil 4, I've only beaten the remake the one time, I just think that people exaggerate about old games and the game would be braindead if it didn't have its inventory system pushing you into using the games systems, which is why I'm defending it. It's a good game and the elements that have aged take about 20 minutes to get used to, as evidenced by the fact that I played it recently on the gamecube and thought it was fine.

The PS1 version was just an unforgiving bastard. You constantly ran out of bullets zombies took multiple head shots also it was brutal. It was also mostly puzzles before the remakes and before like RE4.
Crazy frustrating stream! He really doesn’t need to constantly carry 7 items. Even if you don’t know what you’ll need, keep a fully loaded shotgun and store the ammo. A lot of his frustration over running to and from safe rooms to change items would have been alleviated if he didn’t go out with only one free inventory slot.

There's a lot of parallels to this game that I hear and see used in most of RE4. Not saying it's a terrible thing but definitely a Capcom/RE thing.

4:28:31 is when dunkey finally understands the premise of the survival horror genre. Four and a half hours in. He still pigheadedly refuses to play it on its own terms though. And dodging enemies is trivial because he used the modern control scheme, which not only breaks the enemy encounters but is also why the changing camera angles are so disorienting.
