A great song by a phenomenal storyteller. It takes me back to the most critical year of my life - the one spent in Vietnam (1970). Tom T.'s legacy will endure. When listening to his songs, I return to a different (and in many ways, better) time and place. Thank you, brother, and may you rest in peace. "It could be that the God Lord likes a little picken' too."
Just curious I know the war stays with many for the rest of there lives. But with folks like you it must just be that more real everyday lookin at your wife.
I was a young soldier of 19 serving in a far away land. I recieved a dear John letter. that's the price of being a soldier sailor marine airman coast guard God bless us all
Cause of his death was self inflicted gun shot wounds to the head. Mental health crisis is a serious issue. Ronald Reagan and many Republicans have down played it for years. May he Rest In Peace.
They fuckin killed him bro wacked him for not going along with them and singing songs about jesus. Tim t hall rest in peace with our saviour you are away from thus wicked world satan controlls and am confident you are with the father now. Waiting for your loved ones.
I HEARD THIS SONG 4 THE VERY FIRST TIME 2DAY. WHAT A SONG INDEED! I WAS ONLY AN 11 YEAR OLD BOY WHEN MY BROTHER GERRY WAS KILLED IN ACTION. THIS SONG WILL LIVE 4EVER, EVERYTIME VIETNAM IS MENTIONED. IM GLAD THAT TOM T. HALL SANG THIS SONG . MAY U REST IN PEACE SIR. THANKYA.GODBLESS !
Well, thank you for your sacrifice and your brother's service. My dad and my family members also fought in Vietnam and this song makes me think about my uncle Hershel, he would get a little tipsy and sing it. I also served in the US Army and the Vietnam vets were still in and prepared me for a 27 year career and 3 tours of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. If I hadn't had their mentorship and training on life and war I wouldn't have made it through either. Thank you for the post
My husband, Yank and his very best friend, Larry, would play this song at the VFW and sing...Sure there were many memories of their days of war in Vietnam.
I remember back in the mid 1960's when my next door neighbor got sent to Vietnam. His name was Bill, he had a wife and twin daughters, probably about 4 yrs old at the time, and an infant son. When he was due to come home his wife taught the little girls to sing that song that goes, "Oh, where have you been Billy boy, Billy boy, etc...". They would practice singing this for him and they were, of course, adorable. Well, Billy boy never came home. He had fallen in love with a Vietnamese woman and wanted a divorce so he could marry her, which he eventually did. His family was devastated.
This is no lie: I was in L-4/11 USMC in 68-69 near Danang and went to Dogpatch many times as at my time there they wouldn't let us into Danang proper after Tet 68 unless you had a pass which we never could get. But let me tell you we Marines made damned sure we had a good time! Beautiful girls in ao dais, etc etc!
I met a Viet gal who escaped from Vietnam at 4 years old. She ended up in Australia. So pretty she is. I treasure the talks we used to have. She spoke very good Australian english and her children were so Aussie. My experiences with Vietnamese gals in both Australia and the US are that the Viet gals are so intelligent, hard working, pretty and dedicated to their men. Wish I had one for myself.
@@cynthiaparris7549 Thank you! I'm doing well and I hope your brother is well. Tell him I said Semper Fi! Best wishes to you and your family for the holidays.
If the record companies are listening, please please rerelease Tom's songs I would buy them all over again. My daughter told me today that she doesn't like new country songs, she like my country songs.
I used to back in high school in the 2000s, but they were about older topics. Later, I wrote an occasional short story featuring racism, nothing as strong as my boyhood vim or as top shelf as Hall. I may not have been entirely accurate in my youthful ascertainment of historical events, but the sincerity was there, and would like to think that that stands for something important in the grand scheme of things. All of this was done well before being a political zealot was seen as the hip and trendy thing to do. I would like to believe that I wasn't entirely wrong in my endeavors.
Actually 2 men write all the music you hear on the radio. The whole industry is highly controlled. It's called propaganda. It began with Ronnie Spector. That's why you don't hear anti-war songs on the radio or MTV or which deal with poverty, exploitation, or anything of meaning.
You are lucky as I have idolized Tom since I was 10, I wasn’t old enough to see him in the bars...... so I went to Vietnam and got to see him at Pearls in LA, I recently tried to visit him at his care center but Covid stopped me, so I’ll just say I love the man..... Lucky You
Please give a 👍 for all of the Vietnam War veterans.

Great song from Tom T. about the forgotten war.
I think people refuse to write songs like this today.

This song would be Politically Incorrect today, with the garbage now coming out of Nashville.
Very beautiful amazing voice and song
Just as true today, Jan 2018, as it was in 1970.
It will yank you back in a heatbeat
I saw some of them when I was there.

This song was written in 2014.
1970
@@billynolan2960 Well, you're sort of correct. It was written in 1970 originally, but didn't become popular until 2014 when Trish Yearwood redid it.
