Deamy scenery like that and the joy of capturing the beauty of nature early in the morning definitely outweigh any discomfort of having to wake up at insane hours! A cup of coffee or a cold shower seem like a must before heading out, though, unless someone drives us to the location. A very nice video postcard, so to spesk, from your first Dartmoor outing with the Z8, Julian!
The discomfort is always short lived. Once I'm out there the excitement kicks in! As for coffee, I couldn't leave the house without a coffee....coffee fuels my photography! lol
nice vid mate.. nice to see you out using it.. gutted I wont get to have a play tonight but hopefully soon! loved that location! especially the hula hoop part! haha
@@jbairdexp yeah, I was watching everyone use wireless, shutter delay, self timer, poking the screen or the phone app. Then you used the cable release and I ordered it immediately. Should have it in a few days.
@@Joseph-iu6ip Anything wireless I don't find reliable enough. Shutter delay is fine for static landscapes but for coastal scenes where you have waves, I think the cabled remote is essential. I never liked using shutter delay with waves because it was always a bit hit and miss. 🙂
I click on this video a few hours ago and almost moments later I got an email saying a pre order Z8 has come into stock & would I like it haha! Still putting my business case together in my own mind so will make a decision by Monday. I'm sure you'll have years of pleasure with this great camera mate
Tough one mate. Especially when it's a business decision. Let me know what you decide! And yeah, years of pleasure it will have the be because I'm not buying another camera again for ages! (He says optimistically).
Well worth that awful alarm call at 3:30 am. What a perfect morning to initiate the new Z8. Lovely images Julian. Keep up the great work and videos! Cheers.
Enjoyed the video as usual mate. Definitely an early start and as you can guess i was still in my pit. Glad to see that you are enjoying your new camera. Atb hope to catch up with you soon.
You're going to love that customizable menu, but it takes a while to go through everything, there's so much. And the auto-focus tracking for video... heavenly. The Z9 has just got a major firmware update, with things like Auto Capture and Subject Detection. So far, Nikon have been doing some impressive things with their continual updates to all models, I wonder if the Z8 will get these too? Enjoy!
I saw the details of firmware 4.0 for the Z9. I don't see any reason not expect those updates to be in the Z8 unless they want to keep them for the Z9 to help further separate the products? Anyway, yes, having lots of fun with all the menu options and how you can store them in different banks!
Hi Julian. Glad you got some decent light as a reward for your early start. I was hoping you'd mention whether it was 10 pin port on the Z8 and you didn't disappoint. I was about to sell my MC36A but I'm definitely holding onto it now! Really appreciate you giving us an early view. P.S. Are you at the Wales and the West Photography Show this year?
Thanks Tim. The remote has a few benefits over things like the timer and shutter delay when it comes to shooting seascapes (i.e. waves). It's still a handy bit of kit. I was planning on coming to the show this year but unfortunately something has come up and I'm cancelling my plans. Maybe next year!
Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?
Sorry to hear about your troubles with you Z fc. That seems rough to get charged for repair. Over the years I've updated the firmware on my Nikon cameras, including the Z fc, without issue. However, if you want to be cautious, I'd only update the firmware if the update fixes something you have a problem with.

It's good to be out with it finally! Yeah gutted not to be there tonight as well....though my teeth are probably happier for it! lol
You’ve convinced me to get the MC-36a remote.
That was easy! lol

Thanks Alan! It was good to finally get out with the Z8. It's always a pleasure watching the sunrise on Dartmoor - even if that is 5am! :-)
Love this location. 😊
I’m buying a lotto ticket this Friday- need a Z8😂
It's a great location isn't it. Good luck with the lotto!

Thank you! :-)

Hi Julian. I really like these short videos. Well done!
Great to hear! I really like making them. :-)
Mildly jealous about the Z8, as the big hefty D850 still does the job. Looking forward to seeing your review of the Z8
The D850 is probably still the worlds best DSLR. (Almost finished my review).

I've upgraded from Z6 to Z8 what Focus system you are using for Landscape Photography?? thanks
I use single point AF in AF-S mode. :-)
What time did you get up Julian?
Sorry, I forgot the mention it....03:30 lol
