They are the highest law enforcement authority in a county. The cities are in their county.
@@JohnW9012
The STL City acts independently of the county though. The STL city Sheriffs dept does not currently have legal authority to make arrests, conduct traffic stops, or criminally charge anyone with a crime. Their duties are
-Courthouse security
-Prisoner transportation
-Process servers
-Land Tax sales
-Eviction of poor people from their homes
Betts would always complain about being understaffed, while simultaneously claiming his deputies "patrol" STL.......something that his department isn't even legally required to do. All while failing to provide Courthouse security, which he IS required to do !
Things may have changed, but the St.Louis sheriff's dept didn't have POST training but had Security and Watchman licenses.
@@GoodOciferBadOcifer exactly
Most experienced translates to the most corrupt and entrenched people
It's not a business.. This smells like a Tiffany Henyard situation...
Stay safe sir, always remember Sheriff elect Derwin Brown. Right on! Keep this young man safe
You're getting rid of dead weight sitting around in the office on the tax payer's dime. And the other guy is just giving free jobs to people who are not qualified to wear a uniform.
What a motley physical display of deputies
Good luck with the wrongful termination lawsuits
Sheriffs get to choose who they hire and who they fire. They are the highest authority in a county.
He is cutting costs like a corporation if you haven't noticed. He immediately got rid of people who dedicated and worked their way up to where they're at now. He wants to use that money saved to hire more inexperienced new people with starting salaries. He is getting rid of them by no fault of their own other than their pay is high. He gave no legitimate reasons other than to save money.
This will backfire in a bad way.
He should put his policy into practice and should only take half his salary. So more of the budget could go to the new hires.
Savung money is a good reason. I.E. Russell Wilson and the Broncos
Just cause you work at a place for a long time doesn't mean you should automatically keep the job
The people being fired were already eligible to retire. Also, they were not producing results to justify their Salary.
Well, all I am saying is he should deny half his salary to show that he means business and lead by example.
Most of Them Crooked any damn ways
@circusbrains you see it on the news everyday Dumas. You must live in a hole if you don't realize this.
you obviously are uneducated@@circusbrains
Who is them coward?
@REALSTREETNIGGAMUZIK if you can't figure this out on your own I know you're a woke Dumocrat. Get out of your mama's basement in educate yourself on what is happening in the United States.
@circusbrains okay sh!t for brains here you go. I'm not sure if you're capable of searching for anything on RUclips, but it's a start. Type in (corrupt police officers for the year 2024). If you can figure out how to scroll a page, scroll down, and you will find all you want panty waste. Most are from news channels, some from influence channels. So therefore you go,you woke dumocratic coward.
This is the Trump2025 effect. This good
It has nothing to do with the convicted felon. These moves happens all the time when a new sheriff is elected or when a current one is re-elected. Managemment is usually realigned, and the fat is trimmed.
It has absolutely nothing to do with Trump. Why do you think it has to do with Trump? Not everything that happens is because of trump. Pretty sure the sheriff doesn't give a flying frick about what the felon does
@@circusbrainsyes he is and he lost the case that proved he was a r@pist.
Trump is YOUR DADDY NOW.....
Cry harder demotard.
@@cg6348 and yet the people reelected him. What does that tell you?
Hmm I think I like the new sheriff
Making these decisions before he’s even in office feels a little arrogant. He’s a young, inexperienced guy who might benefit from the knowledge and experience of the people he’s firing. The department he’s inheriting might also be benefiting from those people and suffer without them. And he says he’s firing them just to save money, regardless of their contributions? It might’ve been better to wait until he took office and really got a good, firsthand picture of the situation before making staffing changes.
He said it was to save money, because saying they’re lazy and corrupt would reflect poorly on the department.
Ushering out corruption bro
The new county sheriff has the legal authority to staff his agency the way he wants. I'd be leery of going to far or annoying the wrong people. 🗣 The Orlando.gov FD chief had that. He wanted reform & ethics. The city, city mgrs drove him off in 2yr.
How does removing experienced personal help with policing?
Well, if you take a person who makes $175,000 fire them and can hire two more people that go on the streets because traditionally senior officers aren't on the streets all the time to replace the person more people on the streets
@@countbenjamin1442 St.Louis Sheriffs dont patrol the streets- they transport prisoners and guard the court house. Not sure why they differ from traditional duties like in other counties.
Those fired had already filled their holes in the woods.
Do what you gotta do
Montgomery seems so incompetent and inexperienced. He's going to make a mess of that office and why I didn't vote for him!

What about combatting crime, or is that on the back-burner?
Old corrupt sherrif sounds like a sore loser
“These people got to worry about their jobs.”
Them never having to worry about their jobs is why law enforcement is so out of control.
Exactly! The private sector has to "worry about their job" constantly. At-Will employment. Any week could be your last. If you don't meet expectations.
Maybe is to many corruption in the sheriff department, that the new head doesn't wants to deal with, he rather laid off personal with a bad rap sheet .
Why wait?
👏👏👏 And No Pensions Except either With Discretion
There should be a better reason other than, what these men make a year. So what your saying Hard work doesn't payoff?!?!

Every person in the public is never guaranteed of their job so why should some of the most crooked corrupt people be the exception
Good! Bye, Felicia. 👋

I'm not from STL or live there, but at the end of the news report the reporter does mention that there will be pay raises and at least 30 new hires for job openings.
