    What an incredible instrument VCV rack is and now that it can be used as a plugin it's a proper instrument. I love working with my Eurorack and the idea of having that available 'in the box' as well is incredible. My mind is already spinning with ideas on how to implement it as both an instrument and an audio effect. I love the idea of only using VCV rack and Ableton to create something.

    I found this super useful even though I don't use Ableton - I use Logic Pro X but I was able to figure out the Logic equivalent of all the Ableton stuff. One thing that was not immediately obvious was how to add FX in VCV to a Logic track. The trick was to use the "Side Chain" control that Logic puts on top of the VCV window - pick the audio track where you want the wet signal to go. Just in case anyone else is using Logic, this might save you a few minutes.

    Well, it's 4 am Sunday morning here in Indy, with a snowstorm moving in.
    I just shut down my studio about 5 hours ago, after a marathon three weeks of watching progress bars during a quarter terabyte PC rebuild.
    I spent ten months in 2022 getting the box the way I wanted it, then it up and died a horrid death on Christmas Eve eve, the Win 10 install self destructed, and this was the... crown jewel... of my studio.
    Not the biggest or fastest box, but the one in the right place, and with a chair, to ease the load on my nerve damaged feet that 23577643 live gig loads In, and the same number of Outs, that keep the lights on here, imposed on them in 2022.
    This box sits in the Live Room. Alongside a 65 inch Sony and a pair of higher end 3 way flown PA tops, plus a single 18"JBL sub, driven by 3200...real... watts of Crown and Crest amps.
    There's a 22 channel monitor console, an 18 pad V-Drum kit, a Peavey Spectre electric bass guitar rig, two E. Gtr rigs, and an Acoustic Guitar floorboard rig that gets the Martin my brother bought me last Christmas into the PA and computer...
    ...network.
    I woke up wanting to go make music, but it's the middle of the night, so I settled for watching Guru Omri run thru the basics of integrating Ableton and Rack, and the simple building blocks so well illustrated here have my mind racing at the fundamental raw power this knowlege puts in my hands.
    I suspect our mentor runs a fairly powerful machine, and full well understands the capriciousness of modern computing when it comes to marrying a powerful DAW and an equally powerful sim like Rack... all at once.
    But the real reason this newly rebuild PC is my crown jewel isn't because of the chair, seductive as that may be.
    It is... location.
    This box sits in the middle.
    To the left are the V-Drums, and behind those are my Live Rig, comprised of another PA, a 40 fixture DMX rig, a buncha pad controllers feeding the DNX rig, and 4 more computers. One i7, mostly set up for Livestreaming and three i5 laptops, builds for various live duties, DJ, lights, and naturally, all with full DAW builds too...
    ...all wired up.
    On the other side of the wall in front of me sits the Tracking Room. Four main work areas... a tall stack of tube guitar amps thru a Torpedo Reload, a five tier synth stand, ( plus several others in racks), an X-32 with laptop and a third PA system, and two PCs above three hardware racks, with 4 HD monitors.
    All wired up.
    Off to my right lives the Control Room. Two more PCs, both i7s. One for video, one for audio, SMPTE synced, with a chromakey backdrop behind the operator's seat. Coupla 25 space racks off to the right, full up, and a 61 key controller on drawer slides under the desk.
    And the network.
    5.7 gHz wireless dish to the net, the WAN switch, and the LAN switch, all GB ethernet, two flat subnets, same IP schema, connectable on a moments notice, but usually running in dual seperate mode. Netboxes, and then the production machines, usually airgapped from the WAN.
    Not just data. It handles VCN remote desktop traffic too. Control of all 10 PCs from any seat in the house.
    And rptMIDI, but most of the heavy MIDI traffic runs thru the MIDI backbone, a 56 port Mio-10 with three MidiSport 4x4 satellites and a buncha single ports on audio interfaces.
    The audio network is the main traffic handler. At its core lives a 30 port ADAT multiplex. 240 channels of 24/48 digital audio, thru a fiber optic mesh connecting all 10 compute nodes. Programmable, 100 recallable presets, a real boon, what with 5.5 trillion possible routing permutations.
    It took almost 3 years, out of this 12 year build, to wrap my head around this guy.
    Watching Omri wreak audio havoc out of a single PC, running Ableton and Rack, has my mind racing... thinking about what he and 9 other similar minds could do...
    ...in a place like this.
    After a couple more hours sleep.
    Let the snow fall.
    "Sorry folks, I'd love to help you out, but I'm drifted in. If you really need me... send a chopper."
    ;-)

I'm currently using Blackhole to record VCV2 to Ableton (macbook Pro) but I'm having annoying latency issues, that aren't fully solved by changing block size settings. I'm hesitant to spend more on software at the moment, but would like to know if the VST version would 100% solve latency problems? @@OmriCohen-Music True, it should work like all the other VSTs. It was just a criteria for me to purchase the VST or not. My goal is to do live acts with electronic-Tango in the style of Bajofondo Tango club etc. Therefore I need to live loop my Bandoneon and voice and turn tracks on and off in Ableton and run some drones, generative patterns, synced drums etc from VCV rack, all controlled mainly by a hardware foot pedal, since with the Bandoneon on my knees I can't really operate any hardware by hands. I thought the setup with Ableton and VCV on two screens at the live act would be the perfect combination for having a good overview and control over all the processes. We'll see how it turns out and if it all make sense. Maybe I realise that I should solve the whole setup with VCV only. It's all about trying it out i guess. Thx for the quick answer Omri! One thing I'm having trouble with though right at the start (Basic Sequencing and Syncing) is the gate output from MIDI-CV seems to be always on. So when I followed the same process, Hardly any notes were getting sent through the gate.
    When I disconnected the gate and just had the pitch information, then all of the notes in my sequence would play, but this could be an issue because there's always a MIDI signal going through.

    Hey Omri, I have managed to send notes and gates from Rack to Ableton using CV-to-MIDI module, but I have a problem when sending, say, multiple MIDI notes/gates to separate MIDI channels. Specifically, it seems like Rack VST instance provides only a single MIDI source to be routed into MIDI tracks in Ableton, regardless of how many CV-to-MIDI modules are added in the patch, which I guess it’s why only notes from one channel are received on the MIDI track on Ableton. Do you have any suggestion on how to solve this?

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  2 года назад

      Hi! Yeah, that's an Ableton thing. It will only allow you to output on one Midi channel... If you want multiple Midi channels, you will have to use separate tracks.

    • @maurobelgiovine6413
      @maurobelgiovine6413 2 года назад

      @@OmriCohen-Music FYI, I figured it out! I solved by hooking up the CV-to-MIDI module to main Core MIDI driver (on Mac OS), instead of DAW, and then routing to my audio device. I was able to send MIDI out on different channels by duplicating the module and setting them on different channels. In this way you simply communicate with the device through the main OS MIDI driver, rather than through Ableton.
