Great video!! I had a good time with the first part of the tutorial and was able to produce the same results. I followed step by step on using Cardinal as a sequencer but I'm using Ableton as a DAW. I set up vital on another midi channel and linked it's input to the Cardinal out channel. I cannot hear the sequencer producing any output to vital, although I set it up as I always do, transport running, in outs correct . Tried 5x to rewatch and compare to what you did in Bitwig. I'm confused. LOL. And fascinated.
Hey, Cameron. I've been subbed to this channel for 2 years now, and I rarely comment, but I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you. You don't do the same stuff as other channels. And that's the part that has kept me watching your stuff more than the others that I started with when I was first learning. Even your videos about getting over writers block and your philosophical, and personal stuff is unique, and lets me know that a real human being that honestly cares about others is right here. You probably won't catch this comment, but by the off chance that you do: Thank you, sincerely. Your hard work is appreciated. And so, I'm taking a moment to let you know that. I hope others do too.
@@_DRMR_ i couldnt seem to get cardinal to send a midi signal to another synth track in ableton like Cameron did with bitwig. But i do it with others. Im confused what is different. I noticed the presets i got from the site i downloaded cardinal from don't work in it. Oh well.

I appreciate seeing you give Cardinal the love it deserves. It's usually a mediocre choice for "basic" setups like using it as a typical synth or filter, but it really shines when you need that extra, personalized touch that your other plugins can't give you; one of my favorite uses is building effects that react to MIDI input. Also, it's beautiful for just messing around and experimenting, you can learn lots of new ways to make noise with it, and even create your own synthesis method if you feel like it.

For Logic users, a workaround is to use Blue Cat Patch Work. Pick your instrument (in this case Pigments) and load patchwork as a MIDI FX on that same track and then within patch work, load in the cardinal component or vst. A good video that covers a lot of ground in a fairly short time... but for ME (of little mind), it illustrates why 'hard-wired' synths were developed. All the flexibility/complexity of modular systems, while wonderfully powerful, can be overwhelming for a lot of folks and 'option paralysis' can quickly set in. Again, for ME, something like a polyphonic version of some of the Roland SH series synths or the Arp 2600s, etc (where you have hard-wired 'normal' signal paths that can be 'tapped' and the signal paths re-routed with a patch cable) would be a more practical and immediately useful design... these synths are often referred to as 'semi-modular'. As always, YMMV...
Btw from the Reset output of the Host Time module I see you are using an outdated Cardinal. This was/is a bug with VST2/3 on Bitwig (also happens with VST2 in Reaper) where it doesn't give proper frame sizes to sync to. The latest 22.06 release has a workaround for this. Technically you should use this Reset output for any sequencer Resets.

Thanks Cameron for another awesome video. I love that so many of these companies give us free instruments/effects and other tools to use, it so cool and thanks to people like yourself, you make it easier to understand how to use some of them. Thank you for another cool helpful video.
I was happy to see you doing some modular content. I made sure to watch the whole thing even though and I understand why the lesson was not as advanced as I would enjoy from you. Would still love an advanced poly patch with some of that ambient goodness you are more than qualified to teach.

So glad this video popped into my feed. I had no idea this existed, and for Linux no less. I cut my teeth on Reason back when I was convinced I'd become a professional composer. This is like that, but oh my god so much better. And I didn't have to spend any money on it.
Cardinal has found a home in my workflow.. and when I find a module that is not polyphonic.. I use Plugin Guru Unify to make monophonic patches polyphonic!
Anyone know to get Cardinal to control midi instruments in Ableton? I've tried but Ableton recognizes it as an instrument and I can't put two instruments on the same track.
Late to the party here (as is usual for me). Just got into Cardinal as I was never that interested in the stand alone version of VCV. This was an incredible video, even by your enviable standards. Thanks so much for making this all understandable and fun.
I want to mimic what you';re doing at 12:38 but in Ableton i.e., I want to build a step sequencer in Cardinal that sequences a sound I made in Wavetable. Could you advise on how to route the audio? I've tried routing my wavetable instrument into Cardinal but I'm not hearing any audio.
No joke, he doesn't just explain how to get started, he goes into details about why the output sounds the way it does. Understanding these concepts really helps for continuing with this beast.
Great video. Thank you! One note: while following along in Ableton Live I was unable to put a synth in the same track after Cardinal. I guess Live doesn't let you put 2 synths in series. But I just put the second synth on a second track and told it to receive its MIDI from track 1. And a request: I'd love it if you made a video (or even a series) highlighting some modules in Cardinal. VCOs, Filters, Effects, Sequencers, etc. I don't know where to go next!
Insanity! I grew a little bit bold after dabbling with a couple of software-synths and played with the idea of modular. Thanks for reminding me, that this is not for me. I'd probably break stuff around here while getting frustrated trying to figure out how to make the modules do what I want them to do. Wayyy over my head in terms of possibilities and complexity. I'm a simple man, I use simple plugins and instruments and if I want to add effects, I just add them - without having to worry about connecting cables. Takes me time to learn things and I don't like to fiddle too much. Great video nonetheless!
Oh, interesting! I've been using VCV for 2 1/2 years and hadn't heard of Cardinal until now. So, I already got VCV Rack Pro the day it dropped, though I generally don't use it in the DAW. I make stuff in VCV Rack, mix it down and pull it into Bitwig to finish. Or start something in Bitwig, and develop something complimentary in VCV and pull that back into Bitwig. Between VCV Rack and Bitwig, it's a bit heavy on the computer. Maybe Cardinal is more efficient?
Wow, thanks for this. Ive been messing around with pc-emulated modular synths for a few months now with varying degrees of success. The issue is, all of the plug-ins are set up (and sometimes labeled) differently and a single misplaced wire can and will completely stop your patch from functioning. Somewhere in there is a good argument for making sure you have the basics down 100 percent before you start experimenting on plug-ins with advanced functionality but I mean come on... It has flashing lights and.... DIALS! Maybe you have self control and discipline but i need to spin those dials, man! But thankfully, this video did such a good job explaining what was happening to the voltage as it passed through each module, that I feel confident to go back to vcv (or cardinal) with a full understanding. (Hopefully) No more cable-roulette for me
While the shoutout to Omri is very much deserved, I'd also like anyone reading this comment to check out Jakub Ciupinski's channel; even with relatively few videos, you'll get so much knowledge out of them, guy's incredibly clever
I love how you said you have standards - to be honest you're my fav. youtuber for ambient sound design music theory and composition - you're on point, your humor is spot on, you're content gets straight into it, you offer skips for sponsors due to chapters in YT - you have the highest quality period of story keep to exactly what you're doing as I'm sure you understand, no need to copy others - that's what makes you awesome your content is point from the heart and original! Thanks for all of the vids on the plugins as well, esp free vst/i stuff. Stay healthy and look forward to your next video, it's always right on point with what I want/need to watch to grow as a composer! Thank you so much! P.S. you're teaching style is perfectly on point, slow enough to cover ALL of the steps but fast enough to not get boring, the pace is timed perfectly! P.P.S. what's the difference between cardian and VCV rack? interface looks similar, is it just a fork w diff library of modules? It sounds amazing!

In the latest NIGHTLY builds of CARDINAL there is an init patch provided that contains the basic utilities to interface your rack to your DAW's audio and midi and transport.
Not just the nightly. Should be in the latest releases as well.
holy crap
this will be my favorite VST toy
I can always depend on you showing me new interesting synths Cameron! Thanks for this video, I’m downloading Cardinal right now 🙂
I just want to say thank you so much for making this video. I didn't understand a lot of it yet it is new info to me.
i think i followed along ok and learned just so much and also now have this free synth to mess around with so big win! It is overwhelming when you see all of the items in the inventory - the entire screen is wall to wall components!
So thanks, i do think your videos are great and we are lucky to have access to stuff like this. Thanks again and cheers!
This has to be the best free modular synth in the world
Thank You! Would love to see more Cardinal content! :)
Amazing how quickly you pick these things up and make useful
This is a game changer for me. I have just bought Bitwig Studio, so as a VCV Rack user this is exactly what I needed. Now I can just use Cardinal and save everything in the Bitwig project. Fantastic :)
You are an EXCELLENT teacher!
This is a cardinal sin of EDM right here!👀
Slowly I am understanding this more and more. Venus Theory is the best!!!
I downloaded this for subjective irrelevant aesthetics ( I like the Dark Audible Instruments ) stayed for the VST3 functionality. Thanks for letting me know it existed a few vids back !
That and Reminding me about Surge ( now Surge XT ) a few versions back makes your Chanel one of my faves .
Cheers !
Looking forward to your Surge skin making it to XT as well .
Just remember that the VST3 is still very much beta! Feedback on the github appreciated.
@@_DRMR_ cool I’ve had no issues with it so far with the VST3 . The VSTi 2 however crashes at startup on the update from a couple days back. I’ll try to record it and send some info in cheers !
Technically you should use this Reset output for any sequencer Resets.
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!! Downloaded and installed Cardinal because of this channel and was so lost, and now I have a much better idea of where to start and how
Only your explanation could make a dummy like me understand synthesis
You really are an excellent teacher!
Nice! It's like a way of visually programming your own instruments and effects, for free, in any DAW.
Thanks Cameron for another awesome video. I love that so many of these companies give us free instruments/effects and other tools to use, it so cool and thanks to people like yourself, you make it easier to understand how to use some of them. Thank you for another cool helpful video.
this plugin is all i‘ve ever dreamt of and the fact that it’s free almost kicked me out of my chair 😂
Fantastic vid! Would love to see more Cardinal content! :)
I was happy to see you doing some modular content. I made sure to watch the whole thing even though and I understand why the lesson was not as advanced as I would enjoy from you. Would still love an advanced poly patch with some of that ambient goodness you are more than qualified to teach.
You are extremely talented on what you do, this material is great and I cannot add anything more that is not said before in comments below, thank you so much! 🙏
Thanks for the share, have been considering adding modular to my current set up, this will definitely help me see if it fits my workflow.
please make more cardinal tutorials, i can't find them on youtube and i want to learn how to build modular synths
Try opening the examples and what people have shared on Patch Storage.
Super-excited to discover this and to easily get Cardinal running in Reason. Thank you.
Anyone know to get Cardinal to control midi instruments in Ableton? I've tried but Ableton recognizes it as an instrument and I can't put two instruments on the same track.
THANK YOU!!! Awesome video as always man and I had no idea about Cardinal! Great book suggestions too dude ✌🏻
Late to the party here (as is usual for me). Just got into Cardinal as I was never that interested in the stand alone version of VCV. This was an incredible video, even by your enviable standards. Thanks so much for making this all understandable and fun.
Awesome! I was really hoping to see more eyes on Cardinal, and am glad to see a video about it here! Definitely look into BespokeSynth as well c;
"musique au beurre" good one 👍👍 ----- thanks, I learned a lot from this video about modular synth with Cardinal !
Thank you very much for this, a very good tutorial in how to get started with modular! Best wishes from Devon UK.
That is the best tutorial ever! i downloaded and followed your steps. suddenly learning a lot more!
Thanks bro, you honestly bring so much value to this world and I'm so appreciative of that. Cheers Cam !
This is INCREDIBLE. A deep dive that I ACTUALLY understand, holy crap, thanks a ton! :D This will be incredibly handy for me! :D
No joke, he doesn't just explain how to get started, he goes into details about why the output sounds the way it does. Understanding these concepts really helps for continuing with this beast.
This is fabulous! I love the book recommendation and am looking forward to working with Cardinal. Thank you!
VT: I now have Voltage Modular with my Mixcraft purchase. Which Virtual Modular do you recommend the most? Thanks!
Excellent question!
Thanks bro! I've been looking for a video that was going to help me for quite some time
This is the best introduction to modular synthesis on RUclips!
Clear, professional, good vocal timbre. Kudos!
Genuine question: what modules were of special interest for you, given you already use Bitwig and therefore the Grid?
Great video and I would love to watch more on this subject. This is exactly the getting started tutorial I needed for modular synth. Thanks
That is decent. Reminds me a bit of early Reason, but obviously this looks to have infinite possibilities when making patches.
Awesome video, Cameron. A full review *and* a great modular tutorial. Many thanks.
Takes time. 5 hrs today after watching this several times has shown progress
This helped me so much with patching basics .. thank you sir
Thanks so much for the mention :)
Thank you for doing the lord's work all these years haha
Oh, interesting! I've been using VCV for 2 1/2 years and hadn't heard of Cardinal until now. So, I already got VCV Rack Pro the day it dropped, though I generally don't use it in the DAW. I make stuff in VCV Rack, mix it down and pull it into Bitwig to finish. Or start something in Bitwig, and develop something complimentary in VCV and pull that back into Bitwig. Between VCV Rack and Bitwig, it's a bit heavy on the computer. Maybe Cardinal is more efficient?
By my calculations I was starting download right as you posted 👌🤣 Was looking for a “starter” video and here we go. Fresh as can be.
@Dav For me it was the filters one. The least practical one out of the bunch but the most impressive if you ask me
@Dav For me it was the filters one. The least practical one out of the bunch but the most impressive if you ask me
@Dav I was thinking the one where he uses plenty of filters doing things filters were not supposed to do
I love how you said you have standards - to be honest you're my fav. youtuber for ambient sound design music theory and composition - you're on point, your humor is spot on, you're content gets straight into it, you offer skips for sponsors due to chapters in YT - you have the highest quality period of story keep to exactly what you're doing as I'm sure you understand, no need to copy others - that's what makes you awesome your content is point from the heart and original!
Your question about Cardinal has been answered several times in the comments below.

@@_DRMR_ Would you please remember to keep the vibe chill, none of my message was negative, 'twas a simple question after a long thank you, teach instead of gripe, if you could "copy" it into your comment that would be great; no sense in being hostile friendo and also I was wanting to hear VT's thoughts on the matter, not just any ol' description, thank you for your input have a wonderful day
@@lebronzejames9738 Yes it does make sense.
Frequently asked questions are not fun to keep answering when people don't even do the bare minimum to find out the answers.
Great vid - esp the Pigments mash up. Man I'll have to watch it again to see how that's done. Perhaps pretty please you could do a similar vid but for making beats - even euclidean beats with Cardinal. My ind is still blown - only discovered Cardinal today lol
I always was owerhelmed with the amount of modules available in vcv rack and found patching on the computer screen tedious. I went into eurorack and find the hands on experience and the limitations you have by the available modules much more creatively pushing
wow dude! thank you! great introduction to modular!!!!
Anyone know how to get the sequencer portion of this video to work in Ableton? I follwed along step by step but I have no audio when I put the sequencer in there. Thanks in advance. Awesome video as always.
Modular is my favorite way to write music now.
Its the musical equivalent of a being in a playground... but you're having a lucid dream.
