- In this VladTV exclusive, former heavyweight champion and boxing hall of famer Larry Holmes sat down and detailed his life and legendary career. Growing up in Pennsylvania as the fourth of 12 children, Holmes dropped out of school in the seventh grade to help support his family. However, he stayed involved in sports to keep himself out of trouble and decided to pursue boxing as a teenager. He would eventually become Muhammad Ali's sparring partner before eventually capturing the heavyweight title.
Holmes also spoke about his boxing match against a declining Ali and being brought to tears after beating on someone who he admired. Holmes went 48-0 before his first loss. He also explained why he came out of retirement to fight a prime Mike Tyson and reflected on his correct prediction that Tyson would face legal and personal trouble later on in life. The former champ described his bout against Evander Holyfield and explained why a match between him and George Foreman never happened.
The interview concluded with Larry Holmes revealing that he retired from boxing as a rich man and currently employs over 200 people in his hometown. He later spoke about visiting Muhammad Ali regularly during his final days. Развлечения
I met Larry Holmes on a flight from Miami to Newark. I sat next to him in first class. He was very cordial and friendly. We exchanged emails and he sent me a signed photograph and letter which I was so grateful for receiving. He is a great ambassador for boxing. God Bless you Larry.
That’s awesome I would’ve definitely dug a autograph from Larry congratulations
That's respect. He appreciated that you appreicate him
He’s a super cool guy, right? That’s awesome.
I was a48. State trucker for 24 +
Everybody I met in my travels from near pa say Larry Holmes gave back to his people
Larry is a born boxer. Skillful, gentle, kindhearted, humble, witty and accommodating. I wish him good health for decades to come. Love you Larry.
Larry Holmes was the first heavyweight champ I followed as a kid. Salute to the champ...definitely an all-time great.
He is a great champion.
Larry broke my heart when beating Ali. It turns out that for all these years, we both admired the same boxer. And now, I admire Larry.
My father and I went to see Larry Holmes in an exhibition in Miami Beach in the late 70's. He fought 3 guys, 2 rounds each.
Anyway, after the exhibition was finished, Holmes came out and sat in the crowd to watch the remaining fights. I wanted to meet him and my father said "go ahead!"
He gave me a piece of scratch paper out of his pocket and I went shyly up to Larry and asked for his autograph. He graciously gave it to me.
Thank you for a nice memory, Larry.
I saw him when he came to visit Muss Park in Miami Beach on that same visit in 1978. He signed autographs for 3 hours until there was no longer a line and the sun was going down.
Just when I thought I couldn't admire this man more....
What a legend and pure class Larry Holmes is.....
Hes salty AF lol what are you talking about?
@@tiagomota4734 he infinitely better than you mate
“Ain’t no stopin’ us now” was Larry’s theme song as he entered the ring. Ironically, how fitting of a song it was as he overcame many obstacles in life to be the great man that he is.
Larry was one of those rare champions you may be lucky to see once in your lifetime.
I never understood why this wonderful man was underrated? He is a living legend and a fantastic genuine human being.
His record speaks for itself.
That's because the overrated Mike Tyson came along
The Larry Holmes jab was a weapon of mass destruction , he threw it like a piston .
So true so true
Like getting hit in the face with a hammer.
Best in the business 👌
Facts....best left jab in history
Best jab ever at any weight.
Larry Holmes and George Foreman are the only two great heavyweights from the Ali era still alive. Hopefully they will be around for years to come.
Foreman said Cooney was in the top 3 of the hardest punchers.
@@catsincredulous9998 I definitely agree with you on that. I also put Earnie Shavers in that category.
@@darrickmccabe4203 Leon Spanks still alive
@@geemoney4242 Yes I know Leon Spinks is still alive but I was only referring to the GREAT heavyweights of the Ali era. Spinks was far from being a GREAT anything. He was only MEDIOCRE at best.
@@darrickmccabe4203 well Spinks was the only fighter to beat Muhammad Ali when Ali was Champ. So I guess greatness loss to mediocre that day.
Larry Holmes had the best jab ever. My favorite heavyweight of all time. With the advanced training and nutrition we have today, he would have walked through everyone. Appears to be a genuine nice guy.
Also, Holmes had a deep insight as to why certain boxers are not treated right while others are worshipped: If you're not in the "inner circle", kind of like a frat brother, you'll be kept on the outside. Now, more than ever, we see it online because it's no longer a secret across many industries.
I agree with the jab but the “ advanced training “ is a gimmick and no better or in many cases worse than the so called old days. Many fighters are starting to realize that.
Jack hammer jab. Holmes was tough. the Easton Assassin lost to Tyson but don't think he was all that old, he faught holyfield 6 months later and took evender the distance
@@EmperorNerox Larry did have a jackhammer jab and early on when gloves has detached thumbs his jab and thumb to the eye were deadly.
@@EmperorNerox Holmes was 21-4 after his 2nd loss to Spinks, for a 69-6 record.Spinks quit boxing after one loss; 2-1 as a heavyweight. Spinks’ 5mil net worth’s not bad. Larry’s is 18mil. Who’s the lifetime winner?
Larry was robbed that holyfield fight
I've always liked Larry holms but this interview gave him a million cool points in my book. My dad got me into him as a kid and I always felt he was underrated. What a class act. How can you not love the guy?
A seven years champion still humble, polite and a true human. God bless you and your family.
Most underappreciated heavyweight of all time came at the wrong time after Ali and before Tyson, What a Jab and a Top 7 heavyweight of all time, the fact this only has 12 thousand views proves it,
Unfortunately he came after a great champion so he never got recognition he deserved ! 😕
@@shaungreen4756 And he came before a sensational champion. No credit during his reign and only a little bit more after his reign...but not much more
Yes, i am revisiting some of his fights now. Unbeatable in his day.
@@kevin8poison142, Something that I find really fun to do in all the weightclasses, but heavyweight in particular is to watch every lineal championship fight in order. Of all the lineages, Floyd Patterson to Lennox Lewis was by far the most exciting and entertaining. So many great fights, and many of the greatest fighters to ever fight were apart of it.
@@The_Ex_Boxing_Nerd Sounds good.Have watched many old tapes of fighters and read some books, but not chronologicaly. Tah 4suggestion. Trained hard in old days too, lots of running etc, weights i dont think so much.

Should not have said that about the Rock..

Indeed! 1love
Larry was 48-0 at one point.
Let that sink in.
There were things about Holmes that I didn't admire, but the one thing that I did admire about him was how he -- unlike most world heavyweight champs -- chose to be monogamist and didn't marry a "trophy wife." Most world heavyweight champs, most notably Ali, had a slew of extra-martial affairs and married golddiggers. As a result, they forked out millions on child support payments and alimony. But Holmes was smart and married a decent woman who he remained faithful to. This has a lot to with why he is STILL wealthy today at the age of 70, while most other world heavyweight champs wind up broke.
yeah i appreciate that it shows a strength of character that he has that can never be understated both in and out of the ring
That's one strong character of Holmes
@legend of Awww Sheet ! maybe Trevor was bullshittin and maybe that's why Holmes kicked his ass on that parking lot
@legend of Awww Sheet ! Who takes any stock in what Trevor Berbeck ever said? He was obviously a deranged individual.
@legend of Awww Sheet ! Not biased. I just don't take any stock in anything that comes out of the mouth of a delusional person, and Berbick was that indeed.
One of the best left jab in boxing history ever!!!!!!!
Years ago when Mike Tyson was starting to make a name for himself I told my dad that if he can beat Larry Holmes I might believe the hype. Watching this video and then a highlight reel of Larry Holmes' greatest knockouts now I remember why I considered Larry "The Man" !! What a tactician !

An incredible interview if you wanted to get Larry Holmes opinion on Ali or 2Pac but not really about Larry, his career as a boxer ,very poorly done by VLADIMIR, not surprised.
Larry when you said you cried when your hitting Muhammad Ali now i realized your a good man your just doing your job so do's speak

To me he possessed the greatest jab in all of boxing
I stood next to him, Ali, Howard Cosel & a photographer in Caesar's backlot right before the fight. it was just the 5 of us !! & 12 years ago I met Mike Tyson at the Arco Mini mart in Hollywood & told Mike this story. He was stoked, talked to him a long time, he was really cool & focused, Btw it was 105 degrees at 7pm at ringside during the fight. When I stood next to Holmes he was insanely big & in great shape !!

I don't know if Larry will ever read this but I just want to thank him for the friendship he gave to Copey and the things he did for him when he was still alive. One thing about Larry is even if he didn't know you, he would take time out to talk to you. People on Wilkes Barre St. on Southside Easton used to watch Larry carrying his gym bag to go work out all the time, while other Southside kids were doing nothing but getting in trouble. Larry was goal oriented even as a kid. He is a wonderful man and did much for the town of Easton, PA, unlike many others that become famous and forget to give back to their town what it has given to them. I know I surely appreciated it as well as Copey, Fulmer, and other friends of Larry. Thank you Larry from the bottom of my heart. I still have pics of you, Copey, and Fulmer in my photo album. I treasure them and will pass them on to Copey's son to keep your name and memories alive long after you leave this Earth.

A good man for sure. He deserves the legacy he built. His phone needs to ring so he can continue to talk about boxing and how great he was. To remind us what boxing did for him, and what he did for boxing. His love of Ali was for the man himself. What a great interview of a great man. Someone should make him a damn plaque for the hall of fame..jeeze
One of the most skilled and toughest fighters ever. He went through it. They kept trying to get rid of him, by matching him up with the biggest and baddest, but he refused to go away. He was all arms and quick feet. And a murderous jab. The best jab in the business during his era. His foot speed and jab was a beautiful sight to see. And could take a punch. He could take the punchs of the hardest hitters of the time. His quick recovery from being hurt and getting shook was UNBELIEVABLE. He was not a big heavyweight, but tall and rangy. But, could Stand and punch with the best when he had to. People thought that he wasn't going to last long. So people didn't pay enough attention or give him credit or his due or respect. But, he earned everybody's respect. He proved that he was the BEST. He proved that he had what it takes. He proved that he belonged on the top. And he stayed there for a long time. He was the best in his era. And he was one of the best ever in the history of Boxing. He was Larry "The Easton Assassin" Holmes. Much Respect.

1) Cooney making the same amount of money to fight the Heavyweight Champion of the World Larry Holmes is total bullshit.
2) Larry beat Spinks. Certainly in their first fight. Robbing him of tying Marciano’s record was also total bullshit. All politics.
3) In my opinion I believe Larry would’ve beaten Marciano.
4) Larry Holmes is finally getting the respect and recognition he deserves. A great fighter, champion and human being.
1) That's boxing
2) Spinks clearly won the first fight. Holmes was robbed in the second fight.
3) Holmes would have throttled Marciano. No disrespect to Rocky. He was a legend.
4) Larry deserves a lot of the shit he gets. He is a jealous asshole that shits on all the other legends nonstop, especially Foreman which is shameful.
@@Ididntaskforahandleyoutube 1) That's also business; the market
3) I often wonder. Today, a lot of people dismiss Marciano, because he fought "old men", but he still won. Then, he was smaller than fighters of today, and his overall boxing skills were suspect at best, but the man was tough and he trained hard, because of his recognized deficiencies.
I don't care if he fought me. He was undefeated.
@Michael Ferreri excellent points. I agree.
@@Ididntaskforahandleyoutube So true. He was somewhere between good and great, but closer to good because he didn't fight anyone except mostly boxers on their way out, but it was all overshadowed by the fact that he was such an Asshole.
I was delighted when Tyson laid him out. Now, to be fair, Holmes put up a decent enough fight for me to think that a younger Holmes might have just pulled it off, less Tyson was just holding back on that fight against him.
I really began disliking Holmes after he beat Ali.
Michael Ferreri, I agree with everything you wrote. Yet, there is no reason to compare Larry to Rocky. Rocky was 5' 10" / 188 lbs. Rocky Marciano would have been a Cruiserweight in the Larry Holmes' era. Larry not matching his record doesn't alter his legacy.

One of the most underrated greats in heavyweight history (in my book). Whether it was the Marciano comments, his controversial losses to M. Spinks, his win over Ali ( still my all-time favorite fighter), or his loss to Tyson, Larry Holmes fought so many quality fighters (many unknown at the time) who went on to become champions themselves at one point or another. I was thinking the same, gome back a long way since then
I worked for Larry and Diane for years at Champs Corner as the only fulltime bartender/manager and the last time I seen him was 2015 at his house on christmas eve for a big xmas party. He seems like hes aged quite a bit in the last 5 years. Larry is a good dude but hes got a lot of demons too. Looks like they are starting to catch upto him. I did get to meet a lot of great boxers working there, including Tyson. Larry had a party for Tyson when he was doing his casino tour and they seemed to get along great despite what everyone thinks. I got to talk to tyson for 15 mins straight. Such a great dude. I also met Lennox Lewis, Holyfield, Douglas, Ward and several others. So many boxers came by that place it was great for a huge fight fan like myself. I have hundreds of pictures from my time there with Larry, and I have kept many secrets for him lol. Ah the memories! I was devastated when the bar closed. But it was a money pit and hes one of the few boxers from that era who's still worth millions so he had to close it before he lost it all. He always took care of me financially even when the bar was dead. His house is modest by today's standards, despite having an indoor pool and big iron gates on the outskirts of Easton where it stood out like a sore thumb lol. Still a beautiful house but nothing crazy by today's standards. That's why hes still worth a good amount of money. He spoils his kids silly. Especially larry jr, who was a little younger than me with no job driving a $80k car lol. I wish Larry and his family the best. I miss those days. I hope he keeps his health in check tho cause he really does look like he aged 20 years in 5.
