What I come to appreciate and respect most to Larry Holmes is his intelligence, and will. He was willing to do anything to succeed and come out on top. And boxing was the only thing available to Holmes to generate income to survive and help his family. He was willing to do anything to get there

Larry Holmes, what a class act! Definitely underated at the time but glad to see him getting the recognition he deserves now. Both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua rate him amongst their top 5 heavyweights of all time. Seemed like everyone doubted him but he carried on regardless and never complained. They don't make them like this anymore.

Larry doninated when the heavyweight division was in a decline in alignment with pro boxing's popularity after the Ali era past which includes Ali's last years in clear decline. Larry had a great record & did dominate the division's top fighters in those years so he should be recognized historically as an exceptionally great heavyweight. Who holds impressive records no more so the the most title defenses & longest divisional reign. But it also must be recognized that he fought several great fighters well beyond their prime & dominated in a period of weaker high end talent boxers. That's not saying he never fought any quality fighters & he did have a great jab, but grestest he wasn't. Rocky beat 5 hall of famers after starting fighting just 2 years before becoming champ. Young Larry sparred with the great Ali for some time early in his career so he was well versed & a smart boxer, but no where near the greatest ever conversation!

You started out good but then you drifted back into the "Ali myth". Ali was good but he had a lot of help from judges, referees, and the press. Larry Holmes had none of that help. He won the old fashioned way - by actually beating his opponents. You can go down the list of Ali fights where he got the decision, but in your heart you knew he lost. When Larry won - you knew Larry won. No question. He wasn't awarded any bad decisions. In my opinion, Larry Holmes was a better boxer and a better Champ than Ali. Much better.

Whether he could or, not...He could have kept that thought to himself! He didn't have to say that! The man was 48-0 and, they (The powers that be) literally disrespected him...IN HIS FACE! Mike Tyson...when he began to self destruct and lost his focus...they sent his ass to JAIL and, they knocked him down too! So we may ask ourselves: What is this really about? Larry was his own worst enemy. He cherry picked many of his fights and never attempted to unify all the belts. The fact that he never fought Greg Page, Michael Dokes, or Gerry Coetzee will forever be a blemish on his legacy. He had three very controversial decision wins against Ken Norton, Tim Witherspoon, and Carl Williams. He never had rematches with any of them. A few of his fights ended in controversial stoppages, namely the one against Renaldo Snipes. He had two fights against guys that never should have gotten title shots in Tex Cobb and Marvis Fraizer. It wasn't just the Ali fight and the Rocky Marciano comment that deprived him of the credit and recognition that he craved. Having said all this, I do think he should've gotten more respect in his time than what he got. But I fully understand why he didn't get it for so long.

I'm pretty sure a prime Holmes could beat any heavyweight that ever lived except a prime Ali. Ali's Superior movement and reflexes would give him the win IMO. But Ali would have to Let his hands go and no playing around because Holmes would be all business. I see Ali winning by unanimous decision in a 15-round fight 10 rounds to 5 and maybe 9-6

Agreed but ali would have to be serious amd focused with the same frame of mind and focus he had against liston in the first fight

Well he sure as hell didn’t actually beat Carl Williams, and his fight with renaldo snipes definitely stopped too early after he himself had been given longer to recover earlier.

I hated Larry Holmes for decades because of how he beat Muhammad Ali. Ali was one of my heroes, and I was really angry that Holmes beat him that way. But then I started watching his fights on RUclips, and I started to get an appreciation for his skills. The more I watched, the more I came not only to respect Larry Holmes, but to like him. He wasn't the bad guy I always thought he was after the Ali fight. Now he's one of my all time favorite fighters, and he is arguably the second greatest Heavyweight Champion of all time. I honestly believe he could have taken Foreman and Frazier. And Sonny Liston would have never been able to handle his speed or his jab. Over the last 15 years or so Holmes has finally been getting his due. That jab may have been the best ever, too!

yeah, a lot of people know about the Ali fight and villainize Holmes over it. Ali shouldn't have been in the ring, but we can't blame Holmes for that. He even cried after the fight. Nobody ever gives Marciano shit for beating a mummified version of Joe Louis.

I have Larry, Ali and Joe Louis as my top 3 GOAT Heavyweights. They swap positions on my pedestal every day of the week. After that I like Lennox Lewis & Jack Johnson. That's my top 5.

Schmeling smeared Louis first. Marciano would've easily beat down Holmes due to pure POWER/STAMINA/GUTS. Shit, even Tyson Fury would've smoked Larry Mondello err Holmes. zzzz next?!?

Holmes is truly one of the greats, but his biggest issue is that he was a victim of the times. Unfortunately, he came along during the decline of the heavyweight division.
It would be great to see everyone face off in their prime, but that just not how things work.

Holmes was the Rodney Dangerfield of boxing. " I don't get no respect" is all that he could say back then. He got respect for his boxing but he had a shitty personality and then let a light heavy weight take his title. He was no Ali or Marciano or Joe Louis. Still he was good in his particular era.

3:09 - 3:18 Jody Ballard's professional debut was in 1974 so there's *no way* he would have sparred with Ali or Frazier in their respective primes.
I've always like Holmes and he might have been as good as a prime Frazier but he certainly wasn't as good as a prime Ali.

Alright drop out of public school at 13, I would grade school and Middle School in New York public schools. I was supposed to attend public school in Detroit Michigan I refused going to public school in the inner cities of America it's like going to jail for 8 hours a day. Larry had a learning disability like me so public school was a waste of time I got a little job like Larry.

Why didn't he try unifying all the heavyweight belts? Becoming the unified undisputed champion would have gone a long way towards getting him the credit and recognition that he craved.
