Also you failed to mention no manual transmission option, and the dreaded engine that still dated from the 9th generation civic. Where's the Type-S that Acura was talking about during January of this year? And for 35k you are ending up buying the privilege of Acura's badge, when you can opt for just as much with a fully loaded Honda Civic Hatchback no? Not to mention in Canada you guys get even more amenities and options than US, which I still don't understand...

3:23 what do you need in 2019? A freaking ILX on the new Civic platform. This refresh means at least two more years running on an old structure. Little by little Honda just keeps giving all their resources to themselves and put Acura like the child in the third row seat that nobody pays attention to. The refresh looks handsome but it is not what Honda’s premium brand needs. I own two Acuras and I am not hating one them, on the contrary, I want them to build something that keeps me in the brand. I would buy this over a newer Honda. Those turbo engines don't speak to me like this K series does. And the K series will last longer. It'll be a sad day when Honda stops making high revving NA engines.
This was a brilliant review. Like the Lexus CT, I think that these smaller premium (entry) cars are overlooked. Why would anyone consider the slightly more expensive Accord (when loaded) over the Acura? Especially IF they don’t need extra space. The Acura is a compelling option. Thanks for the video.
For the money, the ilx is hard to beat, when stacked against it's luxury brand competitors. While not the most thrilling option, it's a well rounded car - rather than doing one thing particularly great, it does everything pretty well which makes for a great daily driver. Plus, for those who've never experienced it, the optional ELS sound system is to die for. Yes, underneath it all, it's essentially a fancier civic with a few more premiums but after 45 years of the Civic proving itself on the road, is that really such a terrible thing?
I don't care what anyone says this care uses more premium materials on the inside then something like the civic or a mazda 3 and at least materials wise is more luxurious inside. It's a fact, not an opinion. Guarantee everyone talking shit doesn't even drive a luxury car smh
Nasir Mire I used to drive a Lexus IS 250 and and I would say even that Lexus was more luxurious and that car was made in 2007. Heck they even had push button start which the Acura TSX wagon didn’t even get. The Lexus IS I had had more premium features to and the leather in that seat was top notch for an entry level luxury sport sedan. I have a 2013 venza v6 and a 2015 Mustang ecoboost now.
I do not know what materials it uses. However, as an owner of a Signature Mazda6; Mazda easily gets itself in the entry luxury territory. the interior is superb.
Agree, there are many people talking shit about the TLX, my mother owns a TLX, and I get to drive it every week. It's an amazing car to drive. I have a Mazda 6 and honestly the performance of the TLX way better that the Mazda 6. Lexus isn't avalaible in México though.
True, I test drove yesterday, this car has an amazing feel. Liked it better than the rdx and definitely better than any of the non luxury cars Ive driven recently (Mazda, Nissan)
The ideal personal everyday vehicle, more so when compared with the entry level offerings from MB. Is lacking a dual exhaust (A-spec), and interior space, but the quality and reliability and looks, are there. Thank you for a comprehensive review. Acura. Dual exhaust pleeeeaaase!!!!
Like I said in a previous post, an n/a 4-cylinder looks a little too try-hard with a dual exhaust... why would you insist that it should have dual outlets when you know it has no benefit to performance? Everyone is so used to every car having twin tips, that it's become sacrilege when a manufacturer deletes one!
@@davidg4026 As much as for little add on wings, dark wheels "oversized" tires, and so on, dual exhaust pipes have become synonymous with sport car looks. Had a leased 2016 Premium and loved the car besides the fact how bad the the infotainment was, now fast forward and my wife and I have a 2020 ILX Premium A-SPEC. Same quick and nimble car that is fun to drive but with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and IMO much better exterior styling. Yes the dual screen is still crap but this really is a stop gap car for Acura since all next gen cars will have the same tech and style as the current gen RDX with the touchpad, tablet like screen, and shifterless setup. While the current RDX is a gem with its turbo engine, the K24 engine is a proven engine that is bullet proof. The in house designed 10 speed DCT is probably the best DCT engine out there whether it be Hyundai or Mercedes. The 10 speed DCT has been on the market since 2016 so it has had a software update or two but mainly it remains unchanged and without any issues. The luxury car wise the ILX simply doesn't compare to Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW but it also costs less than $10K less compared to them when similarly put together. Even when you compare the ILX to the Civic it still holds up well since the Civic Sport Touring doesn't quite perform as well as the ILX and uses a newer turbo engine paired with a CVT. While Hondas tend to be reliable we just don't know the long term reliability of the Earth Dreams turbos since the CR-V has already had problems with oil leaking into the gas. Also while Honda does make a great CVT, it's still a lifeless CVT. Sure you could go with a Civic Si, but then you are stuck with a manual and more so you just don't get the premium feel. Sure there are the Hyundai/Kia hot hatches and while those are a great value I still prefer Acura's DCT since it has a torque converter and Acura overall simply has a more premium design and brand cachet. In America the ILX starts at $26K but I would say for a little more the trims most people should be looking at are the Premium and the Premium w/ A-SPEC sicne with incentives rebates both cars can be had for $26K or less sale price
Is this cheaper than a new Mazda 3 because I consider Mazda's exterior and interior styling to be far superior. We don't need car companies telling us they're premium brands when it doesn't show.
@@Brian-jv8iy The fact you think the Acuras design is more sophisticated and refined is subjective. I do know that Mazda's engine technology, drive train, and design and engineering team is certainly more sophisticated. That's a fact given its industry recognition via many awards and accolades.
Acura is one of very few brands that combine the luxury experience without having to put in premium gasoline. Im not sure why i never considered. I bought a mini countryman as first car; great fuel economy but BMW is hefty when it comes to maintenance, even on their economy brand. (Not to mention minis do require premium gas) but only 30$ a week on gas so no problem there.
I have a 2014 ILX and love it. I bought I used from an Acura dealer. I tested it against a 2016 Civic and couldn’t believe the difference in how it felt driving. I’d love to get this one but I’m afraid I need a bigger vehicle now and the RDX is just too pricey.
@@midiskyline congrats!! Wish I kept mine. But needed a family car so had to let the lease go. Mine was tech package with voice control! Back in 2009 man!
I had a 2012 TSX and I loved it coming from a 2007 ford focus. This car shares the same engine as the TSX with a Civic Platform. Believe it or not, this engine was the accord engine back in 2005-2007 ish. They just changed the compression and made you put premium fuel in it to give it that HP boost from 150 to 201. I like this car and the styling, but the single exhaust is a deal breaker for me. I do wish they bumped up the HP to maybe 250. But sharing the same platform as the Civic will definitely make this car an AMAZING daily driver, with great fuel efficiently. I guess the buyers for this car aren't targeting more HP and duel exhaust.
I'm sorry but I must disagree, this is a very dated car. The chassis is dated, the infotainment is dated, and the 2.4L engine is EXTREMELY dated. The only thing that I like about ILX's is the exterior and the 8spd DCT. Acura's whole lineup (other than the new RDX) need new engines. The 1.5L turbo from the Civic is a good start, the 3.5L V6 in the MDX and TLX either need electrification (MDX does have a hybrid but it's ridiculously expensive) or turbos, especially if Acura wants to bring back the Type-S moniker. I could go on and on about how Acura completely missed it with this and a few of their other models, but I will not. I'd rather pay more money for an Audi S3 with quattro AWD than an ILX.
In CR reports the ILX, especially 2016 model is in the top 3 least reliable cars and recommends not buying it. Considering this is the same old platform this is a vehicle you don't bother even test driving even at a relatively cheap price. Just better options out there .
I don't think I've ever seen a review where the reviewer is so positive and the comments are so negative. Zack loves the engine for being "tried and true," while the comments reject the engine as outdated. I can't explain the great divergence between the review and the comments, but Acura clearly has a lot of work to do on its reputation.
Exterior refresh of the ILX is welcomed, seats are ok and the engine is great (this could have been used in the 2017/18 CRV, and 2018 Honda Accord for reliability's sake). The Interior is disappointing to put it mildly (steering wheel and dashboard is just too old for 2019). The Air-conditioning vents are too big for the dashboard and are not nice to look at. Design cues from the interior of the 2019 RDX could have definitely helped here. The 2019 Mazda 3 would actually be a "better value for money" while not classified as a "luxury compact sedan" as the Mazda 3 looks so much better inside out.
Beautiful exterior styling. Interior is dated but still very functional. I've been looking at the base model for my wife and one dealer quoted me $4500 off the MSRP. I thought that was an outstanding deal.
I dont really care about infortainment system or dashboard when it have apple car play and android auto already. The outside look amazing, full of regular safety packed, amazing 2.4l engine with 8 speeds dualclutch with only 35k, what do you expect more? The only downside for me is handbreak, i love e-handbreak with autohold but not a deal for me. Almost perfect bravo Acura
Reliable, stylish, fuel efficient, and fun to drive...this little car does it all. Comparing it to the new Integra, this ILX wins on all fronts; K24 & DCT seemingly provide longevity and years of trouble free service VS. the Integra's new 1.6T mated to a CVT. I'd say, skip the Integra and get an A Spec ILX while they are still around.
@@ezeo.7315 The skyactiv platform has proven pretty reliable. My 2014 Mazda 6 has 112k on the clock and hasn't had any issues. A few of the guys on the mazda6club forum are in the 150-200k range on theirs without issues.
The least expensive, premium car is a Mazda 3. Mazda has a nicer interior and better tech as well. No idea why you are calling a Fwd, prior Gen Honda Civic "premium".
I dig the exterior refreshes that Acura is doing right now. Too bad the interiors haven't changed because they frankly are not premium-looking. Maybe the next generations following the RDX.
Buy an Accord or Camry for 35k. Competition? It’s a TSX engine from 2006. Mazda 6, Accord, Camry can be purchased for 35k. Audi A3 with 220hp and 250torque for 37k. Civic is almost as nice for 28k. ILx is a waste of time. axe this thing
There is a reason its priced where it is man. The manufacturers dont just come up with bull shit numbers. Guarentee you it will hold its value better than most cars in its class. You know why? Because its reliable. It may be "simple" or "outdated " but I guarantee you will see more of these on the road in 10 years than any Audi out now. Seems like a smart decision to me.
gpman1 Audi is what others copy. Audi styling is the most influential exterior and interiors since 2009. Nobody gives a shit about Acura. This brand has been dead 💀 for a decade. Reliable? 10 years? Who the fuck keeps a car for 10 years? Honda/Acura quality is complete shit. This is not the Honda from 20 years ago. It’s unreliable honda now.
I love this 2019 A Spec in the Red with the Red Interior. Very sharp! I like the engine they used and dis not put turbo in it id rather have an engine that is been out for years and is a good all around engine.
OmerTheGreatOne trust me this transmission maybe new but it’s better then the crappy zf9hp used in there other v6 models reliability wise yes there are some issues with the 8speed.
This exact same engine is also used on acura TLX 4 CYL Version until 2019 models...very high fuel consumption and it needs 91 octance gas which is expensive....also this engine has like a 2 second lag when you push the gas pedal and when you wait on red lights if you keep it on drive it will have humming noise from engine / transm...the moment you put it in neutral the sound goes away.....Never has such issues with Toyota / Lexus way to go
Try out Moncton Acura if you in fact on PEI. I bought a used ILX over an SI and do not regret it. I love Honda but you’re getting a better car in acura
Charlottetown Spud I do not. I live in Fredericton but car deals are much easier to get in Moncton in NB. I just recommend them because they are always great to deal with. The day I bought my ILX I had been to the Honda dealer first and was treated like garbage. I ended up just walking out, which I’ve never done before and I’m not hard to deal with lol. Went in to Acura and it was the easiest process I’ve ever gone through with a car. Even the negotiating was better. I’m a Honda shill, I’ll admit it. But when you drive and compare both the difference is very obvious.
The exterior looks really nice, N/A power is not bad. However I think where the ILX lacks is infotainment. When it comes to these entry level luxury cars people more often lease for badge and interior. The competitors are above the Acura in these aspects.
For me the intro music wasn't too loud. Really set the mood of what Zak was trying to communicate. I don't like loud music in these situations, but it worked for me.
better looking than the civic and no funky tablet bolted onto the dash! love the real handbrake and most of all the 2.4 with no stinking turbo--could be the replacement for my 2008 honda accord exl...thanks!
i was just on the website and i noticed that there's no cold weather package option. now it might already be included with one of the premium package but does it offer rear heated seats. Does anyone know?
Based on Consumer Reports owner survey last year, the ILX was rated, by its owners, as one of the most regretted purchases of 2017. Since all that is changed from last year to this year are some superficial elements I can't imagine why it would be any better. it doesn't cost as much as an Audi A4 or Lexus or BMW 3 series but it also isn't close to them in any category that matters in entry level premium vehicles.
so glad they didnt put the 1.5T motor in this. that 2.4L k24 engine will last forever. good job Acura keeping it simple, good engine good car. not just a copy of the 2018 civic drive train. Acura should def offer this with a 6 speed like the civic type R.
Yes it's dated but it will be RELIABLE. You can easily keep this car for 10 years and don't have to worry about maintenance. No turbos to worry about. Engine is bullet proof. If you think Civic interior is better you neee your head examined.
I don't understand the value proposition of this vehicle. Can't I get a well spec-ced Accord that has more space and comparable or more power for same or less??
Hey Motormouth! My wife and I are looking for a smaller car than her '05 Lexus ES, which is very comfortable and quiet for long-distance travel. Can you describe it's highway-ride features? Also, (since we'd be taking leaving the highways for long stretches of our trips) how does it mountain-road twisties? The ES is floaty and makes me wait, which slows me down. She doesn't mind that, but I wonder if this car, in your opinion can cut and thrust these sorts of roads. I know the power is down, but maybe it's fun on these roads is as a momentum car? Great review. btw, I had not considered Acura since the early TL. thank you
longbowdt I drive this car (2017) 60 miles a day - about half highway. It will take the twisted well with no body roll. In fact, the wittiest are fun. There is good acceleration for all highway circumstances.
The ILX is a gem in disguise. Fun to drive, good gas mileage and excellent reliability. The price is the cherry on top

Wait till you see new mazda interior coming in 2019.
@@vince7349 Yeah I saw it. Makes this Acura's interior look like its from the late 90s.
Jabsy yea the new Mazda 3 looks hella nice
@@Brian-jv8iy The fact you think the Acuras design is more sophisticated and refined is subjective. I do know that Mazda's engine technology, drive train, and design and engineering team is certainly more sophisticated. That's a fact given its industry recognition via many awards and accolades.
Buy a new Mazda.
Luxury and reliability.
Gorgeous car! Great review!
Love Acura especially the new design! I just hope they update the interior too.
Acrua, do you want to make some money? Make a 2 door version, throw a hatchback on it, call it the Integra and open a new bank account.
I wish that Acura / Honda would take their current 5 door Civic hatch and de-tune the type R for a new Integra.... That'd be wonderful.
That’s a 3 doors hatchback.. add the ability to remove back seats or make it totally flat to increase boot size.
But let face it, other than high luxury brands, coupe marketing has a strong struggle.
I think they just need to make a coup ilx keep it realistic
I have a 2014 ILX and love it. I bought I used from an Acura dealer. I tested it against a 2016 Civic and couldn’t believe the difference in how it felt driving. I’d love to get this one but I’m afraid I need a bigger vehicle now and the RDX is just too pricey.
The TLX is also a sweet ride, even in (lighter) 4 cylinder spec.
Get a honda pilot then
The Passport has your name all over it !
Katanamast Sim Racing too big. We’re a family of 3 so no need for a 3rd row SUV. The Passport has my interest piqued, however.
JakeDrives seems that way.
Too bad they killed the TSX
tubetop123 they killed it with the 2009 gen2, hence I'm still keeping my gen1
@@midiskyline congrats!! Wish I kept mine. But needed a family car so had to let the lease go. Mine was tech package with voice control! Back in 2009 man!
I still see a lot of 2004 TSXs.. a lot
2004 here with 190K miles, going strong! @@chocolatewheelchair
I hope they bring back the TSX. The tlx is a flop imo. Too soft to be a TSX and not sporty enough to be a TL. The TL and TSX should still be two cars.
Acura doesnt require premium gasoline. One of the last few brands that do that for 45% of their lineup
Love your reviews Zach, can’t say the same for the other two guys
nice looking car Amazing Review
A new interior (revamp dash board) and AWD would make this car a hit! The seats look great!
They lowered the MSRP 2-3 grand. It is a great car for the money.
@@buildmorefarms1007 they lowered the price because the Honda Civic is still better and has better tech. The ILX is overpriced for a last gen Civic
Yeah, I'm scratching my head as to why Acura/Honda would use an old platform for the premium brand.
In CR reports the ILX, especially 2016 model is in the top 3 least reliable cars and recommends not buying it. Considering this is the same old platform this is a vehicle you don't bother even test driving even at a relatively cheap price. Just better options out there .
I think it’s funny the steering wheel is the same as my 2010 TSX had
Excellent video. Thank you from Puerto Rico!!
Cool intro. I felt like pop and locking. Oh and great review.
wow looks great tho and yeah that k24 is very reliable. I admire k series Hondas
Best beautiful car ever human made.
Ugh...no rear vents??
I don't think I've ever seen a review where the reviewer is so positive and the comments are so negative. Zack loves the engine for being "tried and true," while the comments reject the engine as outdated. I can't explain the great divergence between the review and the comments, but Acura clearly has a lot of work to do on its reputation.
What's the instrumental used in the intro of this video?
Good choice!
It’s a great car, very beautiful car . It’s a pity that there isn’t delivery to Russia . In Russia this car would be very popular
Zack, any chance you will test the TLX Aspec?
I just bought one and I love it. I traded it in from a 2017 Acura V6 TLX aspec. NO comparison, the TLX was garbage and the ILX Aspec is a gem.
Finally Acura is probably the only one who has ballz to lower their entry-level price to at least 25 to 26 something affordable haha
nice funky beat in the beginning of the video!
Zack - no Honda Insight review? Why? Need that car reviewed pls.
I really hate how much Acuras car styling has changed its like they lost their way to the years when the 04-08 Tl Tsx Mdx Rsx ruled the road
I enjoy mine. It also has a better warranty and better dealer experience. Did I mention I got mine A-Spec for less than 30K?
Reliable, stylish, fuel efficient, and fun to drive...this little car does it all. Comparing it to the new Integra, this ILX wins on all fronts; K24 & DCT seemingly provide longevity and years of trouble free service VS. the Integra's new 1.6T mated to a CVT. I'd say, skip the Integra and get an A Spec ILX while they are still around.
The new Mazda 6 is acres more premium than this
The new Mazda 3 looks acres more premium than this car!
@Gary Basra The new Mazda 6 blows an Acura (premium car manufacturer) out the door when it comes to materials and NVH, let alone a Honda
Agree!
SnowBoarder&Skier maybe reliability???
@@ezeo.7315 The skyactiv platform has proven pretty reliable. My 2014 Mazda 6 has 112k on the clock and hasn't had any issues. A few of the guys on the mazda6club forum are in the 150-200k range on theirs without issues.
All the ILX and the other Acura models need is the RDX infotainment system. Other than that, Acura makes some nice cars 👌🏿
acura used to be ahead of its time ...now theyre struggling in the modern era
Anyone that dislikes this car for infotainment is a fool
The least expensive, premium car is a Mazda 3. Mazda has a nicer interior and better tech as well. No idea why you are calling a Fwd, prior Gen Honda Civic "premium".
Mazda premium?!?? Loooool 😂😂😂 WTF with you dude? Are you serious?
awd option?
I just want a classy looking vehicle with clean lines. Today car makers are vying for the world's gaudiest styling.
I dig the exterior refreshes that Acura is doing right now. Too bad the interiors haven't changed because they frankly are not premium-looking. Maybe the next generations following the RDX.
Would You take the 2019 ILX over 2019 TLX 4Cylinder?
When will you do a Review of the 2019 TLX?
Hi Zack is Acura's maintenance way lower than Lexus or German counterparts?
Looks nice in the inside
Oh stop saying it’s just an overpriced civic already. Get off your ass and test drive the thing and you’ll feel like an idiot for ever saying that.
I love this 2019 A Spec in the Red with the Red Interior. Very sharp! I like the engine they used and dis not put turbo in it id rather have an engine that is been out for years and is a good all around engine.
Would love to see your take on is350. As always a great review.
It is nice to see that Acura left the CD player as well as Android car play. Nice price, nice vehicle as well. Curious about the leg room though.
Which is quicker and is there a significant difference in acceleration between the ilx and mazda 3?
Are the front headlights as good as the HID lights on the Corolla ZR ?
soo... a last gen Civic with an unproven transmission for more than 30K..
Hmmmm
OmerTheGreatOne it drives much better than Civic. I have a 2014 and I tested against a new gen civic and ultimately decided on ILX. Not regretting it.
@@jasonprice9823 I like this car not really a fan of the dual screens though
OmerTheGreatOne trust me this transmission maybe new but it’s better then the crappy zf9hp used in there other v6 models reliability wise yes there are some issues with the 8speed.
@@Aurora_v_cali what type of issues? I thought acura fixed their engine and transmission problems 🤔
Zack - what are its competitors?
This exact same engine is also used on acura TLX 4 CYL Version until 2019 models...very high fuel consumption and it needs 91 octance gas which is expensive....also this engine has like a 2 second lag when you push the gas pedal and when you wait on red lights if you keep it on drive it will have humming noise from engine / transm...the moment you put it in neutral the sound goes away.....Never has such issues with Toyota / Lexus way to go
Hmm , i have thinking of an SI in the spring but this is an interested option.
Try out Moncton Acura if you in fact on PEI. I bought a used ILX over an SI and do not regret it. I love Honda but you’re getting a better car in acura
@@jasonprice9823 do you work there? i bought an rsx type s years ago from them. i wish it had a manual.
Civic si is for kids.. this better choice
No mention of rear seat or trunk room?
Your music is a little too loud.
For me the intro music wasn't too loud. Really set the mood of what Zak was trying to communicate. I don't like loud music in these situations, but it worked for me.
how much do you think I can get this OTD in Alberta Canada? I mostly want this car for the reliable engine and the DCT trans.
better looking than the civic and no funky tablet bolted onto the dash! love the real handbrake and most of all the 2.4 with no stinking turbo--could be the replacement for my 2008 honda accord exl...thanks!
i was just on the website and i noticed that there's no cold weather package option. now it might already be included with one of the premium package but does it offer rear heated seats. Does anyone know?
why did they make it look like a mix between the corolla and the mazda3?
Based on Consumer Reports owner survey last year, the ILX was rated, by its owners, as one of the most regretted purchases of 2017. Since all that is changed from last year to this year are some superficial elements I can't imagine why it would be any better. it doesn't cost as much as an Audi A4 or Lexus or BMW 3 series but it also isn't close to them in any category that matters in entry level premium vehicles.
Is it available in manual
so glad they didnt put the 1.5T motor in this. that 2.4L k24 engine will last forever.
good job Acura keeping it simple, good engine good car. not just a copy of the 2018 civic drive train. Acura should def offer this with a 6 speed like the civic type R.
Does the passenger seat go up and down?
Yes it's dated but it will be RELIABLE. You can easily keep this car for 10 years and don't have to worry about maintenance. No turbos to worry about. Engine is bullet proof. If you think Civic interior is better you neee your head examined.
I don't understand the value proposition of this vehicle. Can't I get a well spec-ced Accord that has more space and comparable or more power for same or less??
Accord is not luxury, drive or hell even sit in both and you’ll answer your own question
the car is fire, really wish they’d remake the rsx though
The ride is good, but you will feel the expansion joints on the highway.
Twisties
@@patricasmyth4359 yes, "twisties": a light-hearted term for crooked roads (which drivers love to play on). :)
