The BORING and GREAT Helm Hollis Boots

- Helm boots don't seem to get the credit they deserve. Perhaps because their designs aren't ground breaking, or because they don't spend as much as Thursday Boots on advertising, but in this video we dive a bit deeper into the Helm Hollis Boots.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better. Хобби

¿Could you tryout & rate a pair of boots made by Beretta? Yes … Beretta … the 500 year old gun company. I’ve been looking at the Logo GTX model. I’m just not sure if its worth the $500 retail price.
The White Lion addition made me laugh. I annoy my wife with puns all the time.
Im glad it made someone other than me laugh. I was cracking up doing the edit.
Great video as usual. It was great seeing you review a cheaper brand and giving an honest review. I have Thursday Captains and I love them...I call Thursday the Gateway Drug of boots. Since my Captains I bought Redwings, Oakstreet Bootmakers,Whites and I'm currently waiting on 2 pairs from Nick's..Latigo MTO boots and Wickett double stuffed MTO. I ordered them back in April and still waiting,so in the meantime I watch your channel and boot reviews to get me through the long wait. Keep up the great videos!
I think thats a great way to look at Thursday, although they didnt like it when I told them that!
I think the white line does a bit more justice for the black boots and it stops them outright from them looking like combat boots.
Excellent, honest and easy to understand review, Carl. Nicely done. Love your sense of humor.
Thank you kindly!
I have a pair of Helm’s Pablo boots, which are basically a zip-up chelsea boot. I like ‘em. The 🎶 🎵 _white lion_ 🎶 🎵 doesn’t bother me, but I also drive a Honda Accord so that might have something to do with it ;)
Hahaha right on! No hate for the Accord at all!
Not for nothing but Allen Edmonds have multiple sales every year. You're right, they're not a 500 dollar boot, but you really don't have to pay the full freight for an Allen Edmonds if you have a little patience. At least that been my experience. The only time I have paid full price was for limited edition stuff.
Love the video, man! Always entertaining and informative.
Helm was the first brand that got me into non-cemented footwear. I've been wearing the Johnsons (a service boot style with a taller shaft than the Hollis) for almost a year now as my primary work boot in a brewery. They've been through hell with me and have kept my feet dry the whole time! The rubber soles on them have been very comfortable on concrete all day, but they've worn down to needing a re-sole after 11 months. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend the brand as a solid entry/budget brand for non-cemented footwear. Cheers!
I've had a pair of daily wear Johnsons from Helm and they hold up very well! Last time I checked they no longer make the rubber soled Johnson, unfortunately.
Your reviews are superb! Always enjoy watching them.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Nice looking except for that white stripe. I bought Thursdays and returned them after 5 minutes out of the box.
Yeah, that kills it for me, but I guess there are some people who really like it... much like White Lion!
Not a Carl Murawski video without the cap toss
Hahahaha fair enough!
Not related to this video, but just heard you on Stitchdown Podcast about how to win the Patina Thunderdome. Great interview, man! I'm so glad you're involved. Who knows buff boots better than Carl Murawski?! And I gotta say, I don't know anything about sports either, but I know how to get the job done. I thought that was hilarious!
Haha right on! Thanks man, it’s going to be a fun one!
Got a pair in Olive for Christmas yesterday. I'm shocked at how comfortable they are right out of the box. They seem very well made and I'm really happy. These are my first pair of Helm boots and I'm impressed so far. Can't wait to get a gorgeous patina on them.
Just curious if they are holding up well, considering buying a pair soon ?
@spursdynasty7378 I love them. Holding up very well so far. I don't wear them everyday because I have a lot of boots but they're definitely in my weekly rotation. They are absolutely fantastic. Had them for almost a year and they are so comfortable. I love em man.
@@markmullen1852 thanks for your fast response. Glad to hear they’re great. I just ordered a pair on your recommendation. Merry Christmas !
@spursdynasty7378 Merry Christmas to you and yours. I hope you love them. I love olive boots. I have a pair of Thursday Captains in dark olive suede as well. Please let me know what you think when you get them. I'd love to hear your honest opinion.
Interestingly enough, Helm was my introduction to heritage boots. I came across their shop in Austin several years ago. I have the Railroad and Marion Olives, both were made in the U.S. with Horween leather. I believe both are discontinued models. They are very good boots, but the heels do wear down a bit quickly. My cobbler replaces them with Vibram heels for $40. You can get Helms on sale most holiday weekends. At the sale price, the value matches Grant Stone, which I also have.
They are way better than Thursdays, which are not worth getting resoled IMO. I just donated a pair to the goodwill. I’m sure a stylish homeless guy will appreciate them.
Thank you for the long term feedback, though I'm disappointed that they decided to discontinue any American made models.
I just did some research. Both were handmade in Maine and are both discontinued, although can be found still at some online retailers.
They used to contract with Rancourt in Maine to make their American made boots. I have some Chelsea in what appears to be a roughout suede and some cap toe Oxfords in Horween chromexcel, both with vibram rubber. I also have 2 pairs of their Johnson boot, made in Brazil, that I got a crazy deal on and while they line up with exactly what you said and have been great boots so far, the usa made stuff was fantastic and I’ll be hanging onto them for the long haul
I have these brown hollis and marfa in black. They're extremely comfortable out of the box and very well made. They look much better in person. The white line fades when the boots get dirty and doesn't really stand out in the brown . The line looks cool on the black boots.
These are nicer than Thursdays
My first of Helm's should arrive on Wednesday. I was a little hesitant about the white strip as well.. I have to buy a E or EE in boots and shoes. So, with Thursday and Helm I can get a wide size. These are going to be my knock around boots..We'll see how they hold up..Thanks as always for thenice review as always..
Please let us know how you like them!
I see Carl Murawski in my feed and I click
And I love you for it!
I have the Railroads, Marion, and Muller (Black). I chose those models over the Hollis and other 415 last boots (Zind, Lou) because the the 415 has a narrow profile that affects the width and instep height. The wider last (I'm pretty sure it was a 3xx something but none of my models are made anymore so details on the build are missing) fit me well at a 9 1/2 EE/Wide compared to a great fit for me in a 9 EE for a Iron Ranger. The only other comment I have is their partial leather mini lug is a good sole though nowhere near the wear of a Vibram, but on the Zind, the fineline sole really doesn't have good traction on anything but wet concrete. The style is very much an urban semi-casual thing going on that you see in Texas metro and other western metro cities.
So overall, I'd agree with your review, the Helm brand are comfortable out of the box, decent price with the the discount, and acceptable price at retail. But if you have wider feet, the narrow profile they have on their current last may mean you need to go up a half size (which probably isn't an issue since the toe is likely to be a bit longer than you are used to because of the profile anyway. Unfortunately, I don't expect I'll buy anymore Helms until they bring back a wider profile boot.
Great review and honest and straightforward as always, Carl!
Thank you for the detailed feedback! This will definitely be helpful to people looking for sizing info.
Couple things I'd add: Every brand mentioned except for Taft comes in wide sizes, and Helm has some kind of points program like Gap Cash
I appreciate the additional info!
I've owned a pair of Hollis in the teak color for about a year now. They're pretty solidly constructed and have held up well, I rotate between other pairs of boots/shoes so they don't get worn everyday. They're decently comfortable when wearing them all day. The off-brand soles are too soft and thin, Helm could really find a better supplier. My pair isn't close to needing a resole yet but even with mild wear they've worn down a good bit.
I also own a pair of black Ryder boots from Helm, which are more of a hiking style boot. Comparable construction to the Hollis though the commando soles on them have held up a lot better.
Would you happen to also have Redwing boots? If so, how would you compare the Helm to Redwing?
i love this boots but Kreosote Boots K7M my fav this come in black but Kreosote Boots K7M black looks the best
Those were so much fun to make, hopefully we'll do more in the future.
Made in Brazil sounds interesting, I think Veja sneakers are also made there.
Well if anyone would know, I'd expect it to be someone in the industry like you!
a brand with wide options. why is it so rare to find that! Unfortunately I'm not a fan of the white stripe, but I'll keep the brand in mind.
Hi Carl! How about a good better best for polos? I know it’s the end of summer but some places stay warm through September!
Great idea! Though I think it would perform better next spring rather than going into fall. Thank you for the suggestion!
@@CarlMurawski awesome looking forward to it! Thanks for all the great content! Especially enjoying your chats with Albert. I’m planning to pick up the Taylor Stitch jacquard polo the next time they have a sale. I’ll let you know how it is!
I’m curious about how you feel about these boots and the Taylor Stitch Moto boot.
They feel quite similar, but I like the moto boot more. It has a nice eyelet layout and lower height, without that white line. Just my own preference.
What name on the color? Good video broski…..
it's not so much that I dislike the look of the white line, but the first thing i think of is what is it gonna look like when it gets dirty and how hard will it be to keep clean.
It is hard to keep clean, much like a whitewall tire.
Thank you for a great review - not lion here.
dont sleep on Allen Edmonds, still made in the USA unlike Helm, and with almost non stop sales you can easily get there boots for 279 bucks. glad i got a few Helms before they outsourced everything.
AE outsources a lot now
@@kingofthenoobs no doubt they do, for their low end items such as sneakers and cheaper loafers.
I agree I’ve got the Higgins Mill, and while not the most robust or rugged boots, it’s one of my go-to boots for business casual.
AE’s quality is so bad now even on USA-made shoes that I’ve had to return 5 different pair. AE sucks now
@@user-pn8tm5eq3u i have 20 pairs of their boots and have had no sizing or quality issues. i am aware that rose anvil has found the heel stack to be cost cutting composites and the formerly leather insoles to be leather topped foam. i understand frustration especially in regards to my nicks boots which i might die of old age before they arrive. but the quality will be great for my kin. i got AE's combat boot with horween cromexcel leather, cowhide lining and british made it's hide soles for 200 on sale. since i have the fit dialed in these were a slam dunk.
Looks like a great boot but their limited sizing is disappointing. Wish more companies carried 3E and 4E sizes.
Holy jeez! Boots on feet???!!! Never thought I’d see the day. Thanks Carl.
Indeed. Hopefully next time he wears and shows it on camera for longer.
By popular demand! I didnt realize people wanted to see that, but now I'll make it a regular part of the review.
@@CarlMurawski Absolutely! It helps the viewers see how they look on feet. Can be a deciding factor whether to purchase or not
Well then I'll be sure to include it. Thank you!
How the F I cannot find these boots in Brazil??????? It's too pricy to import boots and I cant find a good affordable leather boot here in Brazil. Any tips from anyone?
Find out where the factory is. They'll have to sell factory seconds locally...
What's the Mazda Miata of boots?
These - builder.wescoboots.com/StockBoot.aspx?id=Romeo
Hahahahaha perfect!
You should do a Thursday vs Helms
Thats a good idea!
The contrasting stitch is ... I don't know it reminds me of a Wal-Mart boot.
It lends a kind of weird vibe to the boot, but I'm glad I cant see it when wearing them.
They remind me of a 30 dollar pair of boots from shoe dept
Yeah, not getting that vibe. At all.
Just here for the White Lion montage
The white midsole just annoy the heck out of me.
Its not my thing either
No hat throw opening?
Not this time, I have NO CHANCE of making it from the couch! lol
very 007
lucchese makes some boots in Brazil
Thats a VERY highly regarded brand, I had no idea. Thanks for the info!
I have the same pair the leather has a ton of break on vamp and heal does wear and the top lift will have to replace soon this boots is on pair with Thursday boots and I lived in Austin Texas they are not made there in South Americana I will not buy a second pair I will stick with Grant stones I will pay more for a boot that is 3 times better boot
Fair enough! Thank you for sharing your experience.
@@CarlMurawski Carl I love your channel Thank you
Inspiration>Aspiration
I found this video informative and enjoyable right up to the moment I saw those fingers covered in dried paint. Goddamn it I hate the color green. Unacceptable. If it weren't for that apology id unsubscribe right now.
Love the white stripe. Gives it a modern, urban vibe that stands out from all the other look-alikes. Great leather, too
Love the variety you showcase Carl! I was curious about what Helm is like.
As a point of critique, you might want to bump up the brightness of your videos in post a bit. I find myself cranking up my brightness while watching you videos to get the most out of your B-roll.
Ok another opinion. The good, the bad, and all the other things!
😍😍😍
White Lion 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Not amfan of the white line.
White lion😂
Wooo-oooh!
grant stone selling nearly $400 boots made in china without Dainite or Vibram soles is insulting. I don't care how tight the stitch density is....nvm the sudden $40+ price increase over the last couple of months.
Yeah, that price hike got me too.
Just spend a little more and get some Wolverine 1000 Mile boots. These look really cheap.
Well thats why I give you some alternatives in this video, to make the best choice for your application.
Not even close. Helm is way better than the wolverine in terms of construction. Check the Rose Anvil videos
Wolverines don’t come in wide; this brand does.
