I'm a knitter who works with different wools and wool/alpaca blends. For my pricklier garments, I soak the items in hair conditioner, rinse as usual, and find that the items can then be worn next-to-skin. So if you can't use or find lanolin, give hair conditioner a shot.

there are still folks who use woolen nappy covers for infants. Lanolin is used to keep messes inside of the cover and off your rugs and upholstery. Using lanolin dissolved in warm water will let the oil inside of the fabric and not leave a greasy surface. The important detail is to use warm and not hot temperatures. Then dry the wool using air only and not a clothes drier. The same technique can be used for a woolen blanket. Lanolin not only removes the itchy scratchies but adds a water resistant property. Be careful with how much you use since air trapped in the wool is what makes it warm. if you replace it with oil it wont be as warm.

  • @johnlord8337

Soft sheep wool and lanolin oil. Shear the sheep, then wash out lanolin from the wool, making scratchy wool. Scratchy wool made into fabric. Then reinsert lanolin back into a sheep wool fabric (minus the sheep), making softened wool. Go figure!

i would suggest testing the lanolin on the soft part of your inner arm 1st some folk are allergic to lanolin, they stopped using it in the more expensive shampoos because of this reason, so if not sure check before you put a hat on covered in it :) aside from that thanks for the tip funky much appreciated :)

lanolin, like baby butt Vit A/D ointment (that is the lanolin smell is that Vit D. Modern production of Vit D is made by UV irradiation of lanolin, turning it into chalcholesterol (pro-VIt D and androsterone). So if someone is allergic to lanolin, then they are allergic to Vit D (!). And this Vit D is non-toxic as it is not fish liver oil (Vit A and D). And I have taken doses of this for 100,000 IU for years - with no harmful effects. Great covi, cold, and flu fighter.

Greta info. We use to do that to our watch caps while we were standing watch out on deck aboard ship. in 1976 while we were out to sea, the chief obtained a large green can of Lanolin, he brought it down to the berthing (Crews quarters) we all did that to our watch caps. It does work.
    Thanks Funkey

Good video. Your suggestions work for me, but not some people. Be aware that in a small number the folks, the problem with wool goes much beyond itching. Everyone in my wife's family (Mother-in-law, my wife and son are terribly allergic to wool and break out and have trouble breathing when near anything from sheep, including lanolin. The allergy goes much beyond itchy or red spots...but their bodies swell up could possibly die. They must look at all body care products to make sure that nothing from sheep is included... one touch of lanolin or wool fibers will cause them to go into allergic shock.

Hairspray, aqua-net. (brand name in the US. ) Spray the inside if the hat a couple times before you wear it. Lanolin can be oily and will cause the hat to be less warm. FYI it will also keep insects from laying eggs and out of the hat.

Mr. Funky (Darren), I've really been a big fan of your videos for some time. I wanted to be your 30,000 subscriber but missed that chance (wouldn't you know it, work intervened - quite inconvenient, actually). I subscribed today trying to hit that 34K mark but should have jumped on-board much sooner.
Want to thank you and the famous foursome (you, Roach, Mindwiseman & LW) for all the great info and the time & energy you invest into these videos and the work to edit them into an entertaining and informative package.
But, the real reason to leave a comment was to wish you and yours a Very Happy Christmas and a Joyous, Healthy & Prosperous New Year!!! Hope your good wife is doing well & has recovered totally from the unfortunate happenings earlier this year!!
ATB from a fan from across the "pond"!! Hope you continue these well into the future!!! Stay Funky, forever!

God tip, the old ones are always the best. but lanolin is what was left in after the processing of the wool my gran used to look for when buying wool to knit me my winter jumpers, and they itched like chuff even through my vest and shirt, but would shed water like a modern day swanni ! that's what lanolin is a sheep's natural water proofer but I agree it has a distinctive odour.
at the end of the day the itch from wool is down to the size of the individual fibres which is why merino virtually doesn't itch, unless you are a very sensitive soul.
new here but really enjoying what you put out.

You do know that lanolin is a by-product of wool spinning, don't you. It is in raw wool fleeces after shearing. The first process in making wool yarn gets rid of lanolin, and all the other crap from raw wool fleeces. Softens hands too, quite a lot. Raw wool sorters have the softest hands. letting you know !

I did not know you can buy lanolin - do the same treatment on the outside of the hat too... it's the natural lanolin that makes wool water resistant :-)

I wouldn't use antyhing else than organic lanolin. Lanolin/wool grease is not dangerous in itself, but when the wool is treated, it is often sprayed with various pesticides that contain neurotoxins and carcinogens. This is then found in the product that we apply to the skin and where the contents are slowly moved into the body.

  • @Daedalus_UK
    @Daedalus_UK 8 лет назад

I'm thinking there maybe a better way to apply this. I have not used this method with lanolin, so let me know if anyone has tried and it does not work.
Ok so I was thinking you could boil a pan of water and place pan to one side and put the opened jar into the pan with the opening not covered by water. This would melt the lanolin enough to be used with a horse hair or boar hair brush. Not one of those synthetic brushes. Paint the lanolin onto the inside of the wool hat and allow to dry for say an hour.
The lanolin would be dried on the surface of the wool hat at this point but to allow for full absorption for a second layer of lanolin you could use a hairdryer to heat the surface which would allow the wool to absorb the layer to create a perfect non itchy hat to last a whole season without any more applications needed.
