Hey Brian - which aerator model is this and which local place did you rent it? I’ve had a really hard time getting good deep cores with the red Classen from Home Depot!

The green one I used in this video ruclips.net/video/4kzv5BBHi5s/видео.html right after I moved to Camarillo was the Billy Goat AE401H, I rented it from Sunbelt Rentals and I think they had two other models that I could have used. According to the specs of that model its tines go 9cm deep which is very shallow compared to manual aerators but normal for mechanical models. I actually didn't like that model very much because the engine was too sensitive to slope. My front yard would kill the engine if I went side to side instead of up and down the slope of my lawn...and my lawn doesn't slope very much so it was annoying. Up in Oregon I used a different machine that I liked a lot better, can't remember the model unfortunately but neither one pulled deep cores, they were wider than manual aerators but not as deep. Each machine is adjustable to go slightly deeper but there are limitations with them all unfortunately. If someone out there knows of a good deep core puller mechanical machine please let us know.

@ ah good to know! I had a very similar problem with the Classen dying on my repeatedly. I thought it was due to strain of the compacted soil but my lawn is also slightly sloped so maybe that was the issue. I did end up moving the machine up and down the slope rather than diagonal or across. I still haven’t attempted a manual aerator because I’m worried with the compaction of my soil it will just clog up, but maybe that should be my next move after all

I hate telling people this but manual aeration will always give you deeper cores from my experience. I've used two different machines myself and had hired help do it for me on a couple other occasions. The manual aeration is always deeper but nearly impossible to do well for large areas. I've only done about 500 sqft at a time at once, have videos about those occasions too. if you want deep cores you have to do it manually but mechanically can easily be done multiple times per year. I thin ka combo of both is probably best but also probably more work than most people want to put in.
