We're kicking off from Gemtree in the Northern Territory, and making our way towards the Queensland border. After a short 100km on some of the best bitumen we've ever driven, it's time to air down the tyres and hit the dirt. The Plenty Highway is notorious for it's rough and rocky conditions and we've been warned by many to take extra care, as this is about as remote as it gets when travelling Outback Australia.
We camp overnight at Jervois Station and Tobermorey Station, and you won't believe just how many flat tyres we encounter on this stretch of the Plenty Highway.

Around 20 years ago we went across the plenty , didn’t have any issues , we camped off the road in some random place , far enough not to be seen by traffic , one of the most quietest spots I’ve camped didn’t even here a plane or jet , the only sound was a dingo in the early hrs of the morning ( loved it ) thanks for your video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I have a newish LC300. My best advice is to change to some decent ATs before going remote.
First thing I did was lift it & throw some Mickey T's on it. Factory tyres were woeful.
This brings back memories. I did the Plenty Highway in 1999 in my troopy. Never had a problem. Stayed at Tobemorey had a great breakfast there but had windows open all night and the troopy was full of flies in the morning. But was a great trip

Hi and thanks for the videos. We were across the Donohue/Plenty Highways at the end of August.
With its reputation preceding, we too were pleasantly surprised at the condition of the road.
Travelling from Boulia to Alice, the road to the NT border was excellent..even the unsealed section which is prepared to a standard ready for sealing. I didn't bother airing down till Tobermorey after an ice cream (11.00am) on an unseasonably hot day - 37⁰. Surface degraded a bit from Tobermorey on but still very good condition imo - little amount of loose material, no bull dust but very dusty. Any surface stones/rocks easily avoided.
Given the hot conditions, we had a longer driving day to stay in air con..camped at Arthur River with one other van. Final day to Gemtree saw first of the corrugations over the last 30-40 kms before the bitumen. Loose material on hard pack was the cause..often avoidable with a centre path.
We had no tyre issues. Dropped Prado 150 to 32 from 42 and single axle van to 35 from 65. Ran at 50 to 60 kmhs sometimes slower.
Given the road saves 550 kms over the blacktop through Mt Isa and the excellent standard, would definitely use it next time we head for the centre.
One observation would be that many of the users that passed us, both directions, towing and not, have a different appreciation of the laws of physics to me. Given the speeds seen, there is a very good chance that tyres will be the first casualty.
Btw, for paid camping, Tobermorey is the stand out pick. Jervois ok but shop closed Sundays (when we were there). Enough roadside options if your schedule doesn't suit either.

Love that countryside. Especially when you pulled into camp & the grass was greenish. We're currently camped up in a NZMCA (NZ Motor Caravan Association) park. $10 per night. We have 60 of these camps throughout the country. Plus, heaps of properties owned by club members. Some are free & some have a small charge depending on the facilities on offer. I guess they're similar to your Hip camps. The weather is rubbish today, so we're just chilling out. 😊
It’s really beautiful and surprising how much there is to see 😊 wow we’d love to travel to NZ…. Hopefully we’ll have a mini visit next year 🙌 chill days are so good and sometimes a forced stoppage is a blessing in disguise 🥸 enjoy

I drove across the Donohue/Plenty Highway also staying overnight at Tobermory Station the beginning of September this year. Also calling into Jervois Station for a drink & toilet stop. I found the Plenty Highway pretty good. After Alice Springs, Standley Chasm, Rainbow Valley, Chambers Pillar, Coober Pedy, The painted desert, Birdsville, Big red, Betoota, Boulia, on the way back home I called into the Balamara Bakery in Winton on Monday 16th September for a coffee & cake. As I was sat there enjoying the coffee & cake this young good looking lady walked in. She was talking to a much taller lady & I thought that young lady looks familiar. Anyway after the taller lady left, as the que had not moved much she decided to leave the bakery. Would you happen to know who this young lady was.

A bit of positive feedback. Having lived in Alice Springs many years ago (I left in Dec 2009) I wanted to revisit Kings Canyon, however the cheapest accommodation I could find ranged between $400 to $800 a night. I remembered your video on Coober Pedy, I had always only stopped to refuel when driving past & rewatched it. What a pleasant surprise when I stayed there. I also did the long tour with Noble tours & I mentioned that I had booked after watching your video. He replied that he had also heard this from other people on his tours. So people are watching you & following up on your recommendations. When I asked about visiting the Painted Desert, he replied that I should visit. What an amazing place & I intend to revisit next year. I was completely stunned by how beautiful it was. The factory fitted tyres on the Toyota 300 are shit. I had one blowout at 110km on the Hume Hwy near Wagga sidewall failed only travelled 2700km so new

I can't explain why but every puncture I have ever had has been on the left rear of the vehicle. That is across several vehicles. The left rear also seems to run just a little hotter than the right rear. This happens whether towing or not. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience or can offer an explanation. You definitely need all terrain tyres on those roads.

Question what heat variance to ambient temp do you generally give your tyres a break.
Thank you 🙏 on the Plenty is the first time we really noticed the passenger side tyres (and mainly the rear tyre) getting hotter than they had on previous trips off-road. A couple of factors here - hot weather, full sun on that side of vehicle, very windy conditions and very cambered road producing more lean and weight ratio to the passenger side. The outside temp was 32c ambient temp and the rear tyre peaked and alarmed on the TPMS at 48c. Fortunately we stopped for our friend’s tyre issues and so we cooled down a lot after 30-40mins. Also the tyres pressure and amount the side walls balloon out will greatly affect the heat also - I’m not due if this answers your question 😅 but really hope it helps somehow 🙏

I think you need to re-assess your tyre choice on these sort of roads
The small sharp rocks on this road give highway type tyres hell
Particularly rear tyres
The front tyre will roll the rock and when the rear hits a sharp rock it pierces the casing
I have driven this road and fell victim to exactly this
Too high tyre pressure compounds the problem
AT or MT tyres seem to stand up much better

I’m not certain but I think Paul and Katie are running ATs on their vehicle and van. They mentioned that their friend’s 300 still had its factory tyres.

Side issue
Plugs , will get you out of a sticky situation but I don’t think it’s legal to use them for on road use after being plugged…
( once emergency is over)
Plugged tyres are seriously compromised….
A simple test for tyres is if they can easily be deformed with no air as in the video…
They are unsuitable
Tyres for outback usage need to be so much more solid in construction
Fortunately for us our Mikey Ts were perfect! Our friends factory tyres not so good but they made it through with a half a dozen plugs 😅

Most remote highway? You are talking this up a bit. It's a public road ... and not that tough. Tyre choice might be an issue here. Done 4 trips along the Plenty and it was a breeze! So you can't pat yourself on the back on this one.
