They had a sacrifice every 10 years to bring the village prosperity and they chose Ai as sacrifice because no one liked her. The parents of Ai secretely talked to Sentarou to help them hide Ai so she wouldnt die wich he did but some years later they were found and the village was so angry at them for tricking them into believing the sacrifice was made, that they decided to bury Ai and his parents alive
Part of the reason they buried Ai and her parents alive was because they'd had a terrible run of luck with thier harvests since they made the sacrifice so when they discovered the sacrifice wasn't actually carried out they thought the gods must be angry with them and thats why thier crops were failing. So they made a second sacrifice giving the gods the sacrifice they were promised as well as the traitors who had denied it to them. They hoped this would quell the gods anger and bring back a bountiful harvest
Sentarou made the wrong and regret it for the rest of his life. He even build a temple for the sacrifice victims with his fortune. Sentarou wasn't a bad person he was just overwhelmed by a desperate situation. Not to mention back then people belief the grain dying because no sacrifice is made

She still harboured a grudge against him, as she attacked his descendents centuries later. It seems he was just lucky to have been away from the village when Ai set it ablaze.

Eeehhh no... Yuuko did have it hard but she got locked by people she didn't really care about and then simply became a ghost who later made a friend with whom she could be herself. Enma got buried alive and the first person to throw dirt was her best friend. Then she is forced to kill people and take them to hell even if some victims did not deserve it. She also has to watch the cruelty of humanity for all the eternity and can't act normal. To sum it up, Enma had it much worse.

Exactly how many people do you think she killed in that village? I am not entirely familiar with this show. I only saw a couple episodes maybe a few years ago, so I dont know the full extent of the people in her village. From what I saw, it looked to only be.... maybe 300 to 400 villagers by the size of the town. Correct me if I am wrong and there are lots of more people. But shouldnt she be free if she sends the exact number of people to hell that she killed in the village?

I think ai was a bit weak to just fully relied on sentaro to defend her all the time he just a boy there isn't much he can do she should have just left sooner with her family before sentaro even decide to leave with her weaknesses and over reliance on him also put him in danger it also kind off let to her downfall the villagers killed her and her family and sentaro was forced to betrayed her but just fully relying on a boy seriously Is never wise it also put him in danger ai parents should have take more initiative to defend their daughter and left sooner when the villagers were sleeping /not suspicions instead of fully relying on a boy they had years to do it what were they thinking?
