Malcolm and Roy actually got very friendly on set and when Roy died, a very sad Malcolm, who coudn't attend the funeral, sent flowers to his widow and family.
The full chase scene is so great. No CGI. Just real stunt pilots, helicopters and city locations. We need to see more helicopter chase scenes like this in today’s movies. Cars have been filmed to death.
If this movie was made in the last five years it would likely be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the main character would be either Captain America or Black Widow.

In its Navy application, the 20mm M61 gun and targeting system will continue to fire at pieces of the destroyed target that continue to fly in a hostile direction (towards the gun). Have personally seen this multiple times.
A brilliant movie done in an era of practical effects and stunts... hats off. This is a timeless piece of cinematography. I believe that there is an award out there for this scene
Malcolm McDowell was reportedly intensely afraid of flying that he hated doing these scenes and you can tell by his expressions in them that he was incredibly uncomfortable. And yeah...those were definitely models in the loop given that both the Aerospatiale (which was Blue Thunder) and the Hughes MD 500 (which was the enemy gunship) have three and five blades respectively on their main rotors. I was always wondering why they suddenly had two each.
I've seen footage of a 500 doing a loop. Unfourtunatly he was too low, and the helicopter crashed and exploded. However, if he had preformed the loop at a higher altatude he would have been sucessful.
Yes, you can see in the footage if he had about fifteen meters, about fifty feet, he could have cleared it. Very tragic loss of a good pilot, and a classic helicopter. ruclips.net/video/5_hFSzOKTD8/видео.html
@@Highice007 You can loop many helicopter if you strip them down and use only 10-20% of aviation fuel. The weight and the thrust are usually the biggest problems. Malcolm hated flying and was terrified being in the chopper and would be violently ill during the scenes. The shots of him in the chopper in the air are real, no blue screen. By he was an actor's actor and stuck it out.
The irony is that the Aerospatiale Gazelle (the helicopter that Blue Thunder is mocked up from) could not have performed an aerobatic loop in the first place, much less with all the cosmetic build-up it has attached to it. A Hughes (MD) 500 E model could have done it with a RR250-C30 turbine, but it would have needed a cold day at a higher altitude with everything stripped out of it to reduce weight, and coming out of a dive before pitching back-up-and-over. The best the 500 could realistically do in this scene at this altitude would be an ag turn.
I saw the Making of Blue Thunder video here on YT. So awesome to see how they came up with the design, and then the alterations to the Gazelle. It was so heavy. The copter from the movie was actually used in the pilot episode of MacGyver.
Actually that.. And the larger Lynx can.. Under the right conditions, something to do with the right rotor blades and its basicly gotta be low of fuel (which blue thunder was by this point and may have had the non standard blades.. Instory anyway)
