- Béla Bartók's Mikrokosmos (in Hungarian, Mikrokozmosz; in German, Microcosm) Sz. 107, BB 105 consists of 153 progressive piano pieces in six volumes written between 1926 and 1939. The individual pieces progress from very easy and simple beginner études to very difficult advanced technical displays, and are used in modern piano lessons and education. In total, according to Bartók, the piece "appears as a synthesis of all the musical and technical problems which were treated and in some cases only partially solved in the previous piano works." Volumes one and two are dedicated to his son Péter, while volumes five and six are intended as professionally performable concert pieces.

I can't believe someone actually did this. I picked this set up at a record store by accident. I am a fan of Bela Bartok but I had no idea what these pieces were going to be like. It's almost like piano lessons.

I remember I was 7 when I started taking piano lessons. At that time I learned several songs by Bartók. And now, more than 11 years later seeing Mikrokosmos in BTS’ soundtrack makes my little Hungarian heart so happy ❤️🇭🇺

I took up beginning piano as a biz student (don't ask) while in college & was practicing 3 hrs. daily while in grad school w/ a full academic load. Even back then I liked the living composers (or nearly so) and Bartok was a wonderful find!

Fun fact, that actually is kind of a funny description for Batok's Mikrokosmos, it's a collection of pieces for solo piano, and they start of simple and easy to play (this is just the first ones) and then they get progressively more and more complex and difficult. It's actually one of the most well known pieces of the XXth century. Yeah, the last ones may blow your mind if you are not used to that kind of playing.

Funny 😂 I'm a piano performance major and piano teacher who's also an ARMY. SO funny to see ARMYs here. This music is kinda didactic for my taste but can be useful teaching pieces, that is if my students don't get bored.
17:35 No31 that one gives me trouble even today principally those alternating accents appearing in odd places in the measure,and even the performer doesn't play all of them properly. Yes, indeed a really difficult study!!!!!
For those that doesn't play the piano I will explain why that study is really complex and difficult to play. First thing the canon start in the bar 2 it is almost a strict imitation but in bar 8 Bartók for the purpose of resolving the first voice have cutted the last bar of what would be the end of the second voice(bar 7 in the first voice) that doesn't appear in the second voice. That canon by itself isn't too hard to play but it still very confusing to play those melodic and rhitymic patterns together. Those patterns are quite a trouble by itself but what takes it to another level of difficulty is the accents. Every bar in and between 1 and 8 have its first beat accented in voice 1 or 2, they are constantly switching voices and in bars 4,5 and 8 they're in both voices. When we have an accent in one voice and no accent in the other, the performer must accent only the one that have the accent, that it's really difficult because the tendecy is that the performer disturbs a little the voice without accent by playing it harder resulting in a double accent. The fact that we have to attack 2 notes at the same time, one strong and the another weak is hard because our bodies aren't good with contradictory commands simultaneously, and they change places everytime to confuse you even more. When we have accent in both voices it's easier because we don't need to worry with that problem that I've mentioned earlier. Well that part is surely very difficult but what comes next is even worse hahaha far worse shall I say. In bar 9 after the ritornello we have another canon, the second voice starts in the second half of the first measure, again adaptations were done to the second voice to line up with the first. Now we have achieved to the peak of difficulty of the piece, in the first section all accents appeared in the same places in both of melodies, they were accented in the same way, that helps a lot because if you train and know very well the main theme, it is just a matter of coordenating the two voices because they're the same.But in that second canon the accents appear in different places trought the melody and in really odd places within the measure and the melody. Now even that they are the same melody they feel completely different, accents can change completely the way that you feel a melody.For example in bar 8 the note A is accented but its imitation in bar 9 don't.And in bar 13 and 14 the beat 3 is accented, not the first like in the previous section, so it just confuses you even more. Now you have to study two separate melodies that are distinct one from another but similar enought to the point of being confusing and execute those contradictory accents without getting lost in the canon AT THE SAME TIME, that's so fucking hard to do properly it's too much things at once happening. Just think with me, in that study you need to play at the same time an overlapping melody doing contrary things all the time while accented the right places and not disturbing the other voice, while those accents switch hands everytime and appear almost everywhere possible hahaha that's complex AF, it requires a fine control that's because that exercise is so great to study, it's very challenging to coordenate all that stuff at once and it trains your hand indenpendence in such a way that will help you sooo much with other repertoire. So basically thas is a genial exercise composed by Bartók, he sure knew the intricacies of piano thecnique.
