- Charles III's official coronation may not occur until May 6, but the new British monarch has already inherited a $25 billion real estate portfolio fit for a king.
When he acceded the throne in September, the 73-year-old sovereign assumed control of a $42 billion empire, much of it in real estate. Forbes scoured property records, annual reports, audits, archives and legislative documents to find all of the king’s new possessions. His holdings span from Buckingham Palace-the official headquarters of the monarchy, which Forbes estimates is worth $4.9 billion-to Highgrove House, a country residence in Gloucestershire that Charles first purchased in 1980 for £865,000 ($3.7 million today,) now valued at $39 million.
Although he has only had the crown for a few weeks, Charles is expected to break with seven generations of tradition and reject Buckingham Palace as his London residence to remain in his current home at Clarence House (estimated value: $72 million.) But he will also reportedly continue to spend some time at Highgrove. That means he’ll have to pay about $740,000 in annual rent to his son William, who succeeded him as Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall and now holds Highgrove under the Duchy of Cornwall.
Those properties are part of a vast collection of at least seven palaces, 10 castles, 12 homes, 56 holiday cottages and 14 ancient ruins, per Forbes’ count. Aside from Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham House in Norfolk, which he inherited from the Queen and now personally owns, none of these opulent residences and historic monuments are directly owned by the King. Most are held by the Crown Estate, the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall, institutions held “in right of the Crown” for the duration of his reign. Others are controlled by the monarchy itself “in trust” for his successors and the nation, while another four properties are held by two foundations which the King established when he was Prince of Wales.

Fun fact: If William the Conqueror had put 1 pound in a bank account making a 3% annual interest rate and made it crown property, Charles would now have 1.8 trillion pounds. And if that bank account had a 4% annual interest rate, that would be 10^16 pounds. That's a 1 with 16 zeros for those that don't know.
Except no bank will allow you to pass your account ownership to anyone else.
Also the first bank in England wasn’t opened until 1650 and this predates even the Bank of England.
But it is an interesting demonstration of the power of compound interest.

It ain't the king making laws at Westminister. We also need to be reminded of his charity before he was a Prince. The crown represents pride, identity and unity as a society. So it's only the countries with traditional rulers who's people understand what it means to them not those who don't actually know their roles like the USA since the last rulers were of the red Indies. You can't be more interested in Charles' wealth moreso his inheritance as a point forgetting all his past contributions to humanity. I sense envy by the media too.

A lot of misleading claims in this piece. You show the Crown Jewels when talking about personal belongings of the monarch, which they are not. You describe William and Kate’s trip to the Caribbean as a ‘vacation’ when it was an official visit, they were working. I expected better journalism from Forbes . But I guess you’re just looking for clickbait by adding up a lot of random numbers to give you a big billion in the headline.

There used to be more, for example, the Monarch used to own the houses of parliament before the Queen gave it to the public as a symbol of giving power to the people.
Furthermore, the monarch used to essentially control the country, and therefore arguably 'own' it. This, however, is a modern monarchy and so there have been many cutbacks.

The monarchy needs to go.. you can't expect English citizens to see people that don't really do anything living in that level of luxury when most people in your country can't find housing or afford food or run their water but for 6 hrs a day.. the monarchy is making the English people hemorrhage money.. about half of the money you spend on the monarchy needs to be redirected even if temporarily to help average working families.. The monarchy needs to take one for the team and use some of those dividends from their side hustles...
British Monarchy is completely intertwined with the UKs and the Commonwealths history the British royal family are the creators of Christianity itself . I'm a Christian Australian a member of the commonwealth and ending Monarchy would be murdering part of my culture which is unacceptable. King Charles does not personally own these assets. They belong to the crown. If Forbes can't get that right, they need to do better research.

it amazes me how many people think they should have this, like they earned it... through benevolence, they earned much of it through the pain, suffering and struggle of others, while the others lived in poverty. I am all for someone getting out in the world and creating a business that employs people and produces a product and therefore makes them wealth, but taking over countries to gain wealth, enslaving people to gain wealth, and giving them a penny for what they make a thousand on much of this wealth was not made in ethical ways. God bless the former queen, she was a wonderful woman, but her sons NO, they are not wonderful people, and the people who wore the crown before her, not so much either. This family in general were a blight on the world, in my honest opinion, and I invite anyone to prove me wrong. In fact, i welcome the conversation.

Historical Background:
Crown estate are the ancestral lands(inheritance) of King George The Mad. These private lands are voluntarily surrender every Succession(coronation/accession) in exchange of civil grant to fund a head of state’s responsibilities as a monarch. In exchange the government technically get the big percentage of the profit. The parliament or government nor the monarch doesn’t own it. BUT once the monarchy is abolish the current monarch(deposed) or his/her heirs can turned it us a private property. This is the reason why King Charles III renewed the contract. The royal family generate a huge amount of money but these profits from the crown estates/Crownlands are divide in to 2. The big part goes to government to fund the social and security welfare of the British people while the smallest percentage(Civil grant) is allocated to the Windsor Dynasty. This is the most good contract ever made by a Georgian King.
