@Zombie Head With petrol engines you have coils and spark plugs to think about which is no big deal but Diesel engines by their nature last longer especially as Diesel fuel itself lubricates the engine.

I would bet that most diesel engines would outlast their gasoline counterparts due to this simple fact.

I'm not so sure. Cars as recently as the late '90s would rust. Most cars of the '70s & '80s would rust like mad. Most cars would be dead after 8-10 years or so having rotted to bits. I own an '87 Granada Scorpio 2.9 V9. Yes, the engine is rather bullet proof as it's all iron but I swear I can hear it rusting on quiet evenings. I also own a 2003 E60 530i. It's done 189k miles (304k kms) and has no rust on it as all. the engine, box & diff all run extremely quietly and it's very reliable.

What drives what you call obsolescence is how much the customer is willing to pay for the car. I can guarantee that each car project I've worked on we've tried our best to make the vehicle last as long as possible within a given budget.
There is a drain plug on the canister so it doesn’t make such a mess . I miss my 85 524td. I put 300k on it. It had 400k on it when I lost track of it. Same engine and trans

That was my first car i ever owned. I was 18, the E28 was 24..😅 Mounted a M Diff limited Slip, installed the Sport Transmission with 1. gear left down and raised the Fuel and the Turbopressure.. 🙈 Needles to say it was just awesome to drive..😍 3th gear, close to 2500rpm, a small slap on the Gas and the 524td went Sideways.. 😂😂

I had a 1983 520i petrol , been stood since 1998. Changed the fluids and the battery and she started up. Sold it on to a chap in an owners club to be restored.

These engines were not very reliable for a diesel. My dad wanted one in 1983, but was advised to have a look at Mercedes-Benz, because the dealership was honest enough to tell about the (initial) issues. Head gaskets were a bit weak at the time. But the car went very well. Fast and with a lovely sound.

Driving 190km/h longer time and then stop them fast on the parking place without letting them run in 1000 u/min for at least 2 minutes. The water was boiling then in the cylinder head.... The head gasket dies then very fast. The mercedes natural spirated diesel: like the W124 300D never dies. You can push hours with 180 km/h on the motorway. These engine are by far the reliable ones. More reliable than any japanese car. The only disatvantage mercedes diesel had, whas their fuel economy. Because of the pre-chamber injection system they neede more fiuel. But damm realiable injection pumpe that can run even on peanut oil or sunflower oil. Damm the time i drove with old sun flower oil from burger king. Only the mercedes ate the oil. The rabbit , the japanese toyota the injection pump always broke.... The good inline injection pump that was quality
It's called planned obsolescence ;) most car manufacturers prefer the cars to break down at certain point so people would need new ones or go to them for a fix, more $$$. Back then the audis, bmw-s & mercedeses were top notch quality and lasted forever if maintained properly.
i have 2 Nissan primera from 96 and 01 they are undestructable! every electronic Devise is still working! great Quality! they are like very good friends never let me down!
Damn.. That oil filter design was probably better than cars today. Way more secure. However, I think it might leak if the seal around the housing is bad.

Old diesel engines are so good. You only need battery, coolant, diesel and oil to make them running 🔝🔝🔝

Yes but old petrol engines are the same. My skoda 120 L from 1984 is still in use, the engine is quite good for it’s age. :)

some new diesel engines are cleaner than Any other old diesel. Old cars have weak points. Like mercedes with rust
