I recently dug out my dad's old Volvo 142 68' from like 60 cm's of snow. It's been standing on our yard since 2003, through winters and summers alike. After the "rescue operation" we just swapped the battery and it started on the first ignition. These are legendary machines. I doubt the human race will ever see a more reliable car than these 60 -80's Volvo's. Ofc it had rust, pretty bad rust. But "all" the electricity in the car is working. Like how is that even possible?! B20 for life
These cars are phenomenal. I've had both a 740 and a 240 both with the 2.3 - both were still strong as an ox after 160,000+ miles. Yes-theyre a bit on the thirsty side but thats probably a small price to pay for such a workhorse of a car. A 1000 mile journey is nothing to them.
I had one of these back in the day illegally of course. Bought it from outside an auction where you just turned up, paid money and drove off lol. Had to put petrol in it though before returning home. It was a good solid car 2.0 litre engine that had abit of poke. It was so solid i used it once to ram raid Currys, it went right through the shutters bless it and we spent all night filling it with tvs etc, took us quite a few journeys. On another occasion, one of my friends had been attacked by a local gang of youths so we waited until midnight and went out in the Volvo looking for them. We saw about 10 of them hanging around where they usually did and i drove the Volvo straight at them. Build quality was so great and sturdy that after i ran over them all there wasnt even a dent at the front, Awesome! I reversed over the ones that were still moving and off we went to the petrol station as the Volvo was thirsty again. Another time a friend (saying no names) had an evil step mother, we would often talk about what we could do to help his dire situation. I turned up one day at his house as id heard on the grapevine that his step mum was taking lessons to learn how to drive. I offered to let her drive the Volvo and she was very eager to learn. I gave her the keys and waited. She drove off. What she didnt know was id emptied the brake fluid tank and the brakes would fail shortly. Ten minutes or so later we heard a mighty bang! we quickly sprinted to the accident scene and saw the Volvo on 2 wheels buried in the side of this house. Luckily it was only a bungelow. the wicked step mum had gone right through the windowscreen, right through the bungelow and out the back window, dead instantly no doubt so my friend was happy. I was quite chuffed for him. We quickly turned the Volvo over onto its wheels and god bless it the Volvo started up right away. We got it away from the scene, parked up and put Brake fluid in it. Then jobs a good un. Front end was crumpled slightly but a rubber hammer would suffice quite sufficiently on this occasion. What a car, a proper tank and i will never forget Betty the Volvo she drank petrol though i remember so was very thirsty but she made me alot of money bless her.

spacegreycoralred you two exactly don't know anything. the car is already wreck and it is seen that pumping doesn't harm instead starts car. don't believe myths from society.
Most fuel injected cars have a clear flood mode in which the ecu cuts the signal to the injectors at wot to clear a flooded engine, i know with my old nissan pulsar if the ecu detected a foot on the pedal at any position it would cut fuel on start.
Idk if you really know what you're talking about now, ive owen several volvos, the one i own right know starts up faster if i pump the throttle. And it is working perfectly fine aswell, i dont need to pump the throttle to start it but starts up quite much faster if i do. And yes, im from sweden.
Couple of tips if you have to do something similar again: Whack the back wheels (not the tyres) witha 7 lb hammer usually the rear barkes bind onto the drum after a long time lying unused and a good thump on the back wheel often shock them loose. After a lot of cranks, the engine is flooded with petrol. Hold the accelerator wide open as you turn the starter. This clears the flooding and is more likely for the engine to start. Good to see it come to life again!
Check the fuel pumps! always do the basics first! it will go if you do your home work first, it is obivous the starter works, make sure you have fresh engine oil. pull the wheels and get rid of the rust on the rotors! Volvo's are the best!

it's a fuel injected car so i'm not sure what you're thinking 'pumping' the gas pedal is going to accomplish besides moving a butterfly valve
+SilentServiceCode This ^
It probably would have started faster if the gas pedal was left alone.
+SilentServiceCode just jump the fuel pump relay and let the both fuel pumps run for a few minutes and it would start immediately
For my Volvo, every now and then you have to push the gas bc it'll die at start so you rev it for a few seconds then it'll idle normally
