Thank you for all of your vids. Keep them coming! 👍
Merry Christmas 🎄!
I can say for sure swerving saved ma life. A huge mattress fell off a pickup in front of me. I don't even remember swerving, It was so automatic and muscle memory. Yes, Ladies and gentlemen Dan is 1000% correct when he say "swerving will save your life" learn it and keep practicing it until it becomes second nature. What every day on my ride home is swerve around manhole covers and pot holes that's very good practice.
I use manhole covers and potholes too. Only down side is if you are staying in your lane it's good practice for small objects. Using a parking space with lines (no curbs) for practice workers also. The lines stop around where Dan's blue cones were setup.
Thank you for the manhole tip! Ima forsure use that
We get plenty of practice here in the UK with all the thousands of potholes and sunken manhole covers. The roads are treacherous!
As a UK rider, this is extremely familiar and brings back memories.
For those who don't know, in the UK (and europe I believe) In order to ride a "Big Bike" (Larger than 125cc), you must pass your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). This allows you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc in size, maximum of somewhere around 13-15bhpm, can't remember the specifics. The Module 1, an off road technical test to see how you control the bike on a specially prepared tarmacked training course. This is usually on a 600cc with around 70bhp but can vary due to what your age legally allows. You then have the Module 2, an on road test to see how you ride on the road with the general public in ordinary traffic. Once you have passed all 3 of these, you can ride a "big bike". There are lots of other things to take into account like your age which restricts the overall power you are legally allowed to ride, separated by A1, A2 and full A licence (yes, that is how you spell this type of licence).
I digress.... In the UK Module 1 test, you have to perform this type of Hazard Performance test whereby you hit a speed of 50kph as you pass between a speed marker at the start of the maneuver. A lot of new riders struggle with high speed maneuvers like this potentially due to counter steering and having a good technic. I would suggest when you are setting off, you will naturally want to warm your tyres (again, correct spelling) anyway, so as you weave from side to side, let loose with your hands while still holding the handlebars and shift your bodyweight gently from side to side, get a feel for how your bike naturally wants to move. As you get better at feeling this, gradually start putting in your own manual input to speed it up, try this at a relatively low speed at about 20mph. As you get a feel for this, you are naturally building in that muscle memory required in a crisis situation. Ride safe! ✌️
i sent to DanDan earlier that he might take a look at other country's tests.
got a good clear video of our Belgian testcourse.
swerving is one part of a total of 13 moves.
Ride safe ppl and happy holidays !!
@@Tigerric3 can you put a link?
Doing my DAS now . Hated this at first on the test pad but a few practice runs and I had it , push left, go left is one great bit of advice I’ve been given
Swerving is good, but also being in the right position will help a lot.
Exactly. Always put yourself in a safe position
Dan, great content as always. I just started riding about a week ago and your drills have been a huge help to gain confidence in handling the bike. I like how you put safety first and above all since city traffic can be so unpredictable.
Thanks for the great work you put into your videos. Greetings from Mexico City.
@1:15 Don't brake and swerve at the same time. You'll loose tyre traction on braking itself. you got to save tyre traction for swerving.
DanDan, I love you brother and I have an advice for you.
If it takes you 2 lengths of the motorcycle to break from 15 mph, then it's not looking good.
You should be able to break in that length from at least 30 mph.
Merry christmass to you and your family Dan
Great lesson. 4:45 was excellent. It happens that fast. 😳👍
head and body straight … agreed but we did learn to look next to the object so you see the escape path.
look where u want to go not fixate on what u want to avoid right? :)
Thank you for your videos they are helping me a lot!
But
Sir ! the only thing that I am having difficulty with is that , IS SWERVING basically is counter-steering or it is a part of it ?
1) when we swerve then it really means that we are counter steering?
2) what is the difference between both?
3) is it okay if we counter to escape from a obstacle or do we have to swerve?
Waiting for your reply😇
So are you still technically counter-steering when you have to swerve going at least 12mph and up? And steering normally when you're going slower?
Sven Sharpsword you can feel your bike stabilize between 10 and 20 mph. That’s where contersteering becomes the mode of controlling your bike. Play with your handlebars while you gradually speeding up and slowing down to really experience the difference in handling and steering between these speeds
Merry Christmas, Dan! Thanks for all you've been doing to help us improve our skills and safety.
I have a question:
Earlier today, someone made a sudden left turn in front of me and cut me off so I swerved to the right. But the rider behind me (I don't know him btw) also swerved and overtook me on my right side, he was really close to me and even cut me off too. I panicked and grabbed the front brake, since I was swerving and the bike was already leaned, I ended up dropping the bike.
What should I have done in that situation? Braking is out of the question since I've tried that.
when i did it like this ..i was told i was doing it wrong 😖 .. the instructor wants to see the counterstearing on the bars .. i feel like i do it better like this tho
I find the demonstration of running over the cone to be very appropriate. Thanks!
Swerving is in the MSF riding test. The instructor puts their arm out to tell you to go left or right. It's called pay attention. The most important lesson in riding.
They taught us to counter steer this section. 🤷🏽
Even a car you able to brake and steer away. Before ABS, you worried about not locking your wheels by pumping your brakes. With auto ABS you can literally stand on your brake pedal and swerve. At least with cars, people do not apply enough brake so brake assist has been added. The computer can sense if panic stop and will apply more brake. On a motorcycle with cornering ABS you can use much more braking and swerve safely but must practice.
Hey Dan, thanks for the content. I've been riding a few months now and I've mostly avoided watching crash footage because it scares the crap out of me. But my friend recommended you and I'm glad I started watching. I've learned a lot and your videos, like this one, give me a good idea of the things I need to be practicing to keep myself safe.
I have a question about evasive maneuvers though. In a situation like the one at 4:45 in the video, I would hesitate to swerve because I'm not sure if the car is gonna stop in front of me or continue moving--right into where I'm swerving. How should I go about making the decision between swerving and braking?
It depends on your level of situational awareness during an emergency situation. Survival Responses (SR’s) will occur less often if you are fully aware, keep a nice reactionary distance, have a plan of escape, act as if everyone is out to get you, signal your intentions, and watch “Twist of the wrist II” on RUclips!
We were told to counter steer at this course. MSF.
Merry Christmas !!
And yes i believe swerving is as important as breaking especialy for two wheels
I need to increase the speed to more of highway speeds insteady of parking lot speeds. Brings me back to the msf course. Good info Dan. Merry Christmas to you and your fam bam my dude.
In the uk we have to do that exact manoeuvre in the first part of our test. Except we have to do it at a minimum of 35mph!
Thanks for the video Dan, and Merry Christmas.
I very much do enjoy your video but with this one you have 2 types of swerving you showed one style using the handlebar but didn't show how using your hips and body more then just steering to avoid if I'm wrong please inform me I'm always willing to learn
Thanks Dan. Enjoy your Christmas!
Have a blessed Christmas today. I got 4 small cones to work with but got 16 of the bigger cones. Think I can do the drills with them. 2 big at the start of the swerve and use my 4 smaller on the edge of the object I need to miss
Sick bike
What’s the distance from the two gate cones to the obstacle cones? Thanks Dan and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Start off with 20ft, then move to 15ft when you feel comfortable
@@DanDanTheFireman That's what we did in the MSF. Started further away and then moved them closer, speeding up over the entire exercise.
I noticed you pulled the clutch in when you were Turning. I have been doing this around most corners but wasn't sure if it's necessary. For some reason it just feels right to do. I thought Maybe I formed a bad habit and am using the clutch way too much
I also noticed i pull it in when I'm breaking,,, why do I do this. Is it normal riding behavior or do I have a bad habit already? Can you please do a video of the Way you ride through town.
Excellent video. Thank you.
What are the other tools?
What's the difference between swerve and counter steering?
doing gods work danny boi
How about the distance between orange and red cones? How many feet do you put them apart?
I think this is the hardest thing to do in the module one in the UK riding at 50km/hr.
Merry Christmas!
So swerve is quick counter steering?
Can not wait for the 28th and 29th my partner and i will be taking the corse in cave creek az been are dream for long time and are Christmas gift to one a nother
Can wearing a backpack be dangerous for if you were to fall?
Love, love, love!!!
Why not countersteer
You should be counter steering at 15mph and above . With the broom exercise your pushing left to go right and pushing right to go left. That is incorrect.
so, this isn't counter steering?
Do you need to do the counter steering in order to swerve or do you just do the normal steering ?
I want to know this too. This is what worries me the most
Please can I borrow that car park 🤪🤪
Guess who hammered this into my thick head? A judge, in court after I hit a kid on the road. The kid was ok, bruised but otherwise intact. The judge wrote in his judgment that a skilled rider knows how to swerve and if I don't know how to do that, I shouldn't be on the road. I was mad at him for a long time but slowly I saw the sense🙈
I feel the judge is slightly disconnected with reality.
Passing of a motorcycle test or cbt legally permits you to be on the road.
Of course these skills are essential and are not to be underestimated though so I do see your point.
@@sharpfluff2222 I agree. If the techniques and expectations taught and expected of you in the motorcycle test are not sufficient to avoid a crash, then maybe start raising the bar for the tests. If that still didn't work, maybe the rider isn't at fault. Yes, it would be great to not hit a kid if you can avoid it, but at a certain point you have to assign blame where it is due, not just where it is politically correct.
Hey Dan are you in Vegas, the scenery looks familiar?
question. what are your using to mount your GoPro to the front of your helmet?
Sugru and a regular mount
@@DanDanTheFireman thanks a lot. i actually forgot about that stuff. going to pick some up! ride safe!
What are you Talking about ? Good title for a Video gut Not Vers clear.I would say to do a counterstear to make a Quick swerve ?
Start the video on .25 speed 🤣
Brake and swerve....."brwerve'
