The RC of my dreams. I'm much too happy with my 8th scales and real cars to buy a fifth scale but still I appreciate them from afar. HPI masterfully crafted and engineered the 5B!
8th scale is the sweet spot for me. Everything starts getting much more expensive 5th scale and I'd rather have a pimped out 8th scale than a 5th scale that I can't afford upgrades for. That's mostly my wallet talking. I can afford to buy a 5th scale but I couldn't look at myself in the mirror. $120 for 2 tires is bad enough. 😮😂
Yep , 1/8 kraton fits perfect in the front seat of my GMA sierra and a granite on the floor , sometimes a 4s outcast in between looking like mating frogs . All standing on back wheels with the k6s on the tires on the backrest 😂. There’s no space for a 1/5 although I would like to have one if I had a larger yard and dint have to transport it I think it would have to be a 👍 but I’m stuck on 6s . It’s enough power and size for me to long jump 50’ 6-10’ high .
This totally reminded me of Jang’s channel, Ultimate RC! I just went back and watched the review video of this and he used some Proline Bowties and said they worked great, that was 11 years ago so I’m sure there’s other good tires out there too. Would be interesting to see another video doing some upgrades on it!
I was thinking of his review while I was watching this. I could hear him in my head complaining about traction and needing to dump money on usable tires. The good ole days
I have my old gen one 5B with a DDM upgraded/bigger engine, killer (sounding) exhaust, carbon fiber upper front chassis, shock towers, and I think brakes as well, annnnd it’s missing its left front wheel. My cousin ran it into a curb at full speed, ripped the wheel off, and that was it! I never fixed it! I even got the repair parts but I never installed them! I just sorta hung it up and kinda drifted out of the hobby. That had to be 17ish years ago now. Now I’m back in the hobby with my own son and I’ve still got the 5B sitting up on that shelf. Its even got the same grey upgraded chassis straight from HPI as in this video. I bought it off a coworker who wrecked it and bent the stock purple chassis, though I still have that too. All stock electronics, I may just have to get back into it now!
@@ligmatubeandfab9487 Not yet but I’m thinking I may get back into it and fix it. I admit after kinda being out of the hobby for awhile, when I came back I was surprised at the amount of upgrade parts available for the 5B. Seemed like there were more available now, then when I drifted out of the hobby 17ish years ago.
Probably one of the most legendary rc's of all time. I have an OG SS from 2009, and will hardly ever sell it. Just love the thing, fires up every time and gives me smiles for days!
I remember being 8 yrs old walking into a hobby shop for the first time and seeing the 5b and the 5t and they were just massive in size. Still to this day I want to own one. It’s like my RC poster car. I wanted one so bad but the price was way out of reach for my parents so eBay was my next bet. Ended finding a team associated sc8 (converted to electric) redBull truck and was completely blown away by that.
Best rc day ever was running my electric 5b clone at Pismo beach. It was a blast launching up dunes and hitting massive side hills. Smooth surface is key.
I remember when these crazy dudes had either a 12 or 24 hour endurance race with the Baja. They I think had like 10-12 enter it was live streamed. It had to be 12-14 years ago. Just fantastic
One of the dream RCs I hope to own in my fleet for a collection. The original 5b Gas version is what I want. I could never afford one as a kid so if one pops up for a good deal I’m getting one.
I got one of the first ones off the UPS truck from Horizon Hobbies, through my beloved, and miss it and the guys like CRAZY, Larrys hobbies on Long Island, back in yeah, way back when! I was waiting at the store for the truck, even the guys hadn't seen one 'live' yet. I still, well, sort of have it, with a Daves Discount Motors 30 CC engine and almost every upgrade available, I ended up giving it to a friend, as I got old and there's no way humpin' around a 25 Lb RC car was doing me any favors. Had a BLAST with that thing though. For you newcomers, if you got the cash, and the room to run it, I HIGHLY recommend! Looked a little too nutty on 12 S though. I feel that was more of a "Because we can" experiment. lol
It uncontrollable on 12s, being a 2wd. All it needs is 8s & gear up if you want more top end speed. Modern radios with gyro, certainly help’s with control on loose terrain. I hope HPI, release a updated version soon 🤞🏼
I had a 5B SS back in 2008ish. Picked up the Flux a year or so ago and put in the same power system, IIRC. Not a lot of dirt lots around me, but in the fields behind the house, the side pods get absolutely packed with grass and the front of the rear skid plate gets hung up. The rear sway bar pops out the chassis mount all the time too, but I got metal ones to help with that.
Much like jang said when this came out: tires make or break this rc. Matching those rear tires to the driving surface is more critical with this than just about any other rc
A little disappointed you folks couldn't do an actual speed run on 12s. However with that power and combo it's got to be able to do at least 60 mph. $750 for that kit is actually pretty reasonable too all things considered as I remember they cost a lot more that that (although that was also an RTR)... I know because at the time I had the choice between that and getting a used full size Z-28 Camaro, and I went for the Camaro! LOL! At any rate, gotta be fun throwing something that big around!
I would suggest that for a demo like this; put out two or preferably three cones and then do laps around those and then you can tell the mark somebody’s heading for and how well it’s drifting and sliding, and how well it can be controlled - Instead of just slashing around aimlessly like this, the viewer can see what mark the car is heading for and how well it can handle it and the driver is getting real practice making controled turns and marks.
Nothing can beat a Baja! Careful ripping around in stones like you did in the video, I had mine throw a rock that hit me in the chin hard. Could’ve lost some teeth! Great fun though.
Currently have a 5B that’s been widened and running an OBR Twin engine. The car is an absolute beast. DDM and Detroit Performance are the places to go to for parts and mods.
Still got my original HPI Baja 5SC from 2012, granted you wouldn't know as it's been so heavily modified and powered by a Taylor RC 80cc Supreme engine with the no longer available Tony Green titanium pipe. It's a handful doing 80+mph in grass with the front wheels in the air, do need to lower the wheelie bar some.
The super 5sc…always wanted the truck as a kid and couldn’t wait to get a job to buy one myself..by the time I got a job and had 1.5k to throw into an rc the super 5sc got discontinued
That was really cool. I forst saw one of these around 07? I was just getting back into the hobby, and getting my sons into it as well. I thought a couple of things. First, that's ridiculous. That's essentially a Kyosho Ultima. design and geometry wise. And lastly, that's really cool. As time passed more and more people were selling them 2nd hand. I went for the Flux version. The first one I got was a rip off. It was so flogged out, paid way overs for it. Another came up that was around the same price but was a peach. I restored the first one (took a while, and many dollars) and gave that to my youngest son. I really want to get a kit one, but I've already got a Flux sitting around. You win you lose.
Awesome thanks for putting this together. Love seeing a good classic HPI featured 😀. I have been eyeing the kit for some time now. I like the upgrades from the 1st gen and ghe fact it is a 1/5th scale kit build. The 5b is one of my all time favorite looking rc cars. I think hpi made the v2 easier to work on and beefier driveline. I have the losi 5ive, time for the hpi 😀. Gasser though, 2$ for 2hrs of run time. Yes please. There is aftermarket 3spd bolt on transmissions and all kinds of cool stuff for them. Thanks to the clone market.
Not the worlds first 1/5 scale go mainstream I owned and still own a fg marder which has been and is still in production to this day and was available long before the baja
i always wanted this car!! That thing is a beast and you certainly ran it for him hahaha and not that anyone asked but the duratrax looked good in the back but in the front too they just looked goofy in my humble opinion
