A massive thank you to Kpop and Matt for a fantastic series of Baja content! Thank you to DDM, Castle Creations and Reef RC for supplying the components! Thank you to all you HPI Baja enthusiasts who love to Baja!
hey, I dont know if you guys watch fullsize car youtubers, but Cleetus McFarland started getting into RC cars. I would be beyond stoked to see you guys work together. If I was your social media manager, I would have been all over that the second I saw him getting into it. I know for a fact that the 1/5th scale stuff would blow his mind & that he would instantly start modding his RC cars to the absolute limit. I'd be quick, I think Traxxis is going to beat yall to it if you dont.
For everything else, electric. For 1/5th scale, has to be the gas version. I've driven both, but I prefer the animal of the internal combustion. And one day I will paint and decal my 5B to make it look like a 5th scale Ultima.
I always wanted a baja and a year ago I got one and I love it! I’ve just bought loads of new parts including an OBR reed case engine can’t wait love the sound! Great video and great editing!

I just picked up a fairly modified 30cc (I believe) 5T and have been dumping a bucket of cash into getting it tip top. I am currently waiting on a 60kg servo.

Shimmed arms, shimmed hubs also cotton/ca'd all the balls. Any suspension setup tips?
great video man, im glad these machines have made a comeback. As much as I love the gas sound for a short period, it would drive me crazy when it comes to longer bashing. Also it would drastically reduce places/times where/when I would fell comfortable driving it... so electric seems to be better choice.
Gas is awesome! I have a 5ive-T 2.0. It’s piped…….It’s obnoxiously loud, and I do worry about annoying the neighbors. If you get one keep the stock can exhaust.

I appreciate y'all and all the sic content, love this rc stuff, truly been a life saver for me. Thegridnack is my lil bro, he smart cookie.. I'm just the basher older bro. he's the technical one that tells me which next victim to get.. Good times with rc's as always!!!
YES! glad to have you bro! Better, is a hard word. hard to define when comparing. If you want a loud stinky rc car, that is stout and is kind of it's own driving experience, then yeah BAJA 5b. But there are other options out there, there's the Losi 5ive T, The kraken Vesla, The losi dbxl, the MCD line of fifthscale, and a few im sure i am missing. The gas engines are no fuss. They start even if tuned badly, and once dialed you don't need to touch them ever. It's pretty great. If you want quiet and more throttle modulation, go electric. It's a different beast. all together. hope that helps. probably gave you more questions than answers, but that's how you know you're on the right path.
RC bros gotta stick together. Especially the 1/5 boys. Shits dying off. Try best to support the good brands, they’re small, niche, and fragile. We’ve been blessed with another run of bajas. 🍻
i should also mention. the weight of this buggy, you could go with a 23cc like they came stock with v1 and have very enjoyable power. i think the most noticeable difference with the bigger dissplacment, is low end grunt. at 5000rpm on the grey clutch spring, the car could easily loose traction with a blip of the throttle. it's fun for bashing. but terrible for power modulation for racing. i'd say keep the 32cc on the 4wd cars, they need all the power they can get.
OMG I love that you are using a Hitec Lynx 4s. I have not seen anyone but me using it except Adam Drake for a while when sponsored. That thing is awesome. You can totally tell the engine/pipe is not stock. nor the servo. Electric is wimpy whiney poo.
How many bros do we gotta get together before we can have ddm sponsor prizes at an event? Maybe hpi sponsor? We need a forum an oval track or full track or should we start by getting a brap day going? I really feel its only a matter of time before somebody gets a baja class race going again
maybe wait. see how the vesla does. don't get the first run. and watch and read reviews. The baja is very tested the vesla is new. BUT, the vesla looks sweet ass! so, i say vesla, but wait just till the second batch.
The Baja 5B is the sexiest looking 1/5 scale. I do think the GAS Baja 5B is the quintessential Baja among all the Baja variants whether that be Truck, SC, or Flux Buggy. I got into the hobby around 2007, and back then seeing videos of people running the Baja 5B out in the dunes with their Futaba 3PK transmitters seemed to me like the pinnacle of off-road RC. I'm an all electric guy, I never got into Nitro or Gas. My timing for getting into the hobby allowed me to get into the type of performance with electric that previously was only obtainable with internal combustion. So, for me, the introduction of the 5B Flux RTR gave me the opportunity to get into 1/5 scale and feel like I had achieved that pinnacle of RC. I'm so glad these kits are back so I can continue to run, break, and repair my Baja with genuine HPI parts. I had become a bit concerned that parts unique to the Flux variant might become very difficult to get.
10:55 that opinion is based on your personal opinion :) and you are entitled to have one! my personal opinion is that a Baja came with a real combustion 2 stroke engine, its the OG, no one should put an electric motor in a Baja, that's suicide. at the end of the day.. i don't really care as long as it's not my baja😂😂
try one. there is something VERY different about no clutch engagement. the gas bajas to go slow in racing you had to hit the engagment point with your throttle in slow bursts and you get the HP at that rpm no matter what. there is zero power modulation under 5000rpm. The electric versions of these cars are faster around the track because of this alone. I get it brap brap and all. i have 5 gass bajas. But i don't pretend there is only one way a baja should run. to me that kind of mentality ruins the hobby. again just my opinion.
If they had released a nitro version, instead of gas, electric would have been the instant winner. However, for this 'gas vs electric' debate, my answer is "six of one, and a half-dozen of the other". I luv my electrics - simplicity, ease of maintenance, reliability, etc - but, at the same time, I've REALLY been wanting a gas (NOT nitro) RC again. When I got back into RC approx a little over a dozen years ago (after a 35+ year absence), I started with helicopters, then drones, then cars & trucks (bashing & racing), and finally boats. Since being back into RC, all I've run is electric. However...this is most important...when I first got into RC back in the mid-70s, what I started with was gas. It wasn't quite 'hobby' grade, but it was definitely above 'toy' grade (besides, what gas RC would truly be considered 'toy' grade). In comparing the advantages of each, this is how I see it: ELECTRIC - quieter - can run in more locations - more "streamlined" appearance (ie. no huge pipe hanging off the side) - more balanced (again, having to do with the pipe on the side) - more reliable - has 'reverse' GAS - REALLY been wanting a gas vehicle...especially a large-scale gas RC - longer runtime - "excitement" factor - attention-getting (this could also be a disadvantage, depending on 'whose' attention it's getting) Obviously, the advantages of 'electric' far outweigh the 'gas'...but, the "longer runtime" advantage of gas is a fairly 'powerful' one. To be honest, I'm really "on the fence" with this one. I do want to get an HPI Baja 5B SBK (been interested since the moment I found out about the release)...but, I can't decide which. Living in the SF Bay Area, the electric would have probably been the smarter way to go, and I was just short of getting one...but, having moved to the Las Vegas area a couple weeks, the gas version is "back on the table" (yeah, just had to borrow that phase from Matt). The desert around Vegas is perfect for this vehicle (and MUCH better than the Bay Area would have ever been), no matter which is chosen. It'll probably be at another couple months before I purchase...and, I am 99% certain I will be getting one...but, I could REALLY use input from others on 'which'. Side note: I also posted (albeit, a shorter version) in the comments of SBG's video.
very thorough for sure. I think it was more of a click bait argument. there is no right answer. BUT.... I think if you got gas you'd regret it., the electric is good with everyone around every time. The gas will cause you issues with sound. Although the Gas version is heavier, it's very well balanced, the pipe doesn't weigh enough to make any noticeable difference, and we always recommend using the 5t can exhaust, that is tucked away behind the engine and doesn't stick out at all and is also probably 80db quieter than what we're hitting here. The big issue with electric, is puffed batteries even after proper maintenance. these bats aren't cheap.
@@kpopRC Don't mean to call your reply "funny"...but, in a way, it sorta-kinda is. You start by suggesting I'd be better off with the electric version (ie. I think if you got the gas you'd regret it)...but, the rest of your reply, essentially, extols advantages of the gas version. Regarding the exhaust pipe, I assume you're referring to the Losi part number LOSR8020? If it's (a lot) quieter than the exhaust you were running in the video, that should/would resolve the majority of the "noise problem". The only thing I'd really be missing with gas is 'reverse' (it's nice to be able to go backwards when needed)...but, at the same time, having 30+ minute runtimes is a HUGE benefit. Regarding batteries "puffing", that's something I'm familiar with. I currently have at least 30 batteries (from 2S to 6S, from low 'C' rated batteries for crawling, to super-high (ie. 150-200C) for racing boats & NPRC drag cars), and poor maintenance (my own fault) had caused some packs (long gone) to have puffed in the past. As long as they are well-maintained, discharged to "storage level" within 48hrs (I try to do it within 24hrs) if not used, and cycled (fully charged, then discharged to them charged back to "storage level") every few months if not used, there's usually no reason for them to 'puff', or go bad, prematurely...unless, of course, they are low quality packs.
Electric all the way for me. Brilliant filming, loved it. Gas has too many issues and way too much NOISE. Now I like ICE, but low revving V8's from the 1960's, not farty sounding singles, sorry! 👍🍺🇬🇧
There are far far more ‘never gas’ RC guys, than ‘never electric’ RC guys. I’ve passed 50 cars a long time ago, 1st car was a Tamiya Frog, and still never even driven a gas car. Every time I’ve watched these guys, they spend half their time starting tuning mixing fuel maintaining them, all without reverse. I don’t get it, is that the fun part?
this is gasoline. this is not nitro. Gasoline we start and drive. Most fifthscale guys start the engine out of the box and go full throttle for 45 min a tank for gallons. don't confuse this with nitro. very different.

- attention-getting (this could also be a disadvantage, depending on 'whose' attention it's getting)
Obviously, the advantages of 'electric' far outweigh the 'gas'...but, the "longer runtime" advantage of gas is a fairly 'powerful' one.
Gas all day long. I need the sound and smoke. The smell and the grime the grit and the nastiness.
I can't think of a single reason why I would buy a nitro powered RC.
this is gasoline not nitro. very, very different.
Not 1st pull 🍋
Electric all the way for me. Brilliant filming, loved it. Gas has too many issues and way too much NOISE. Now I like ICE, but low revving V8's from the 1960's, not farty sounding singles, sorry! 👍🍺🇬🇧
Do you show any electric or is it all Gas ?
electric side of this video is on SBG channel, it' in the description.
How can we decide if you only show the gas version of it 🥴
sbg is late with his video. should be up today
Gas ftw loll
There are far far more ‘never gas’ RC guys, than ‘never electric’ RC guys. I’ve passed 50 cars a long time ago, 1st car was a Tamiya Frog, and still never even driven a gas car. Every time I’ve watched these guys, they spend half their time starting tuning mixing fuel maintaining them, all without reverse. I don’t get it, is that the fun part?
this is gasoline. this is not nitro. Gasoline we start and drive. Most fifthscale guys start the engine out of the box and go full throttle for 45 min a tank for gallons. don't confuse this with nitro. very different.
that pipe is way way to loud.. put a olimat in it. oh and 1/5th scale is petrol. the rest is electric.
yeah we run 5t cans with need for any weirder power bands. That's my reco every time.
