Do you mean the family photos? It's quite normal here in Taiwan for photos to be airbrushed or Photoshopped, and people (including politicians) sometimes run away with it. I think those photos were the originals, which were already quite airbrushed.

I think the parents killed their innocent children (due to debt), and committed suicide in a isolated area after leaving the note to make it look like someone or group of bad people did this to them (killing the husband and wife and the children).
Lesson here: do not make babies if you are not emotionally, mentally and financially capable. Also, we shouldn’t question or shame people who are choosing not to have kids because we are seeing higher numbers of people of the new generation not wanting to have kids. It’s their life, their choice. It’s better to not have kids than have kids because of society pressure but cannot afford nor be there for them as they grow up.

I think the parents owed some sharks some money and couldn’t pay. Sharks wanted their kids but the parents wouldn’t allow that to happen and decided that the kids being dead is better than being sold or harvested. They decided to kill their kids on the same day as a previous case to cause some mystery, so people wouldn’t look down on them for being unable to provide for their kids. Sharks killed them in the end.

The vowel E in Sheng and in every other word is pronounced like e in ‘the, her hers’ not like ‘left’. Also the ‘i’ in clandestine is pronounced like mine not like tin.

Great writing! All of the children are named Liu. Is it a last name first thing? Serious question. That's confusing when your parent calls your name.
Common for Chinese and possibly other East Asian cultures to use surname-given name(s) format, Liu presumably being the family name of the father and kids. Not common for a family to name their kids exactly the same name.
They might have similar names though, such as a common first character. For example my first cousin was called something like ‘Sheung Mun’ meaning good at study/learning etc so my parents were going to call me ‘Sheung Mo’ meaning good at physical pursuits, only they were afraid that I might then fight too much (no doubt I am mangling the words but it was something like that)

In defense of Hualien, I was there for a month in 2011 and I've never felt safer. This is just tragic and it can happen anywhere. The nicest people I've found in the world are in Taiwan in all of my travels.

I think you don't understand taiwan, it's very much like Japan - there are NO air conditioners! A body left for ANY amount of time in that humid hot environment is immediately going to stink and if left for a week, everyone on the Block is going to smell it! Also you don't know if the smell was dutifully recorded overtly in the police record (primary sources) by everyone (cops, neighbors etc).
