    Hey, I'm all for promoting Monster Rancher. It's an underrated gem of a series that deserves more attention. The fact that the devs actually listened to the fans and re-released these games is almost unheard of. So any and all promotion for these games are good, as it could revitalize interest outside of Japan and possibly bring about the return of the other games. Anyway, another great video, Snek. Keep up the good work.

      Much appreciated! I guess I shouldn't second-guess myself so much and just do what I love - which is covering obscure, under-loved, and indie titles. It's worked well so far, right?

      @@TheHipsterSnek Indeed it has, and you've done a fine job at doing exactly what you set out to do. Your content is great at shedding light on underappreciated titles, so keep it up and we'll keep watching them.

    Don’t worry yourself Mr.Snek. Monster rancher deserves the love! Always happy to see more high quality content here on RUclips covering my favorite forgotten gem, so please, more is always appreciated ^~^

    Immensely appreciate your content fam! Was a big fan of this game (MR2 in particular) in my childhood and loved that a thoughtful friend got me a copy of DX on Steam for Christmas. Videos like yours are how I fumble through the new UI integration and controls because, as you do mention, they don't seem to be well explained anywhere (not even the manual on the DX landing page does a good job of it).

    I had a Naga/Suezo that always wanted to fight in tournaments again just after coming back from one, even when there wasn't even a tournament happening that week. And his favourite food was potatoes which I heard is one of the worst things to feed your monsters. So he rarely got to eat them.
    According to the breed description these guys are so smart they tend to get into arguments with their trainers. Well I ended up with a moron, and that was before I ended up tanking his already low intelligent stat with heavy drills. I loved him all the same though, he put in a lot of work in battles and earned me a lot of money.
    Edit: Also one time I took him on an adventure and he checked the same part of the ruin three times in a row. Shockingly there still wasn't anything there.

    I mostly watched this to hack the algorithm into giving me more Monster Rancher content. I am glad I did though. Good video.

    The button controls are pre-launcher menu. When you launch the game and at the selection screen between Monster 1 DX or Monster 2 DX, there is an option menu. In there there is a keyboard/controller setting and it opens to a smaller separate window that may open behind the game.

    SNEK! I had no idea you're a fellow Etrian Odyssey fan! It's such a tiny fandom in the west sometimes but oh my LORD do I love it. I love making teams of dysfunctional people and letting them become a family! I love my crossbow-toting Medic who's been part of every first run since EO4! I love the new games having multiple save files! I could go on for days but FOE!

    In MR1DX, I had a Tiger/SubNaga that did the EXACT same thing as your worm. I believe the number of times it ran away for exactly 1 week hit double digits.
    Also I found a monster with ones in both life and defense. I decided to sacrifice it to get a ghost, so I entered it in an E rank tourney. He proceeded to take 999 damage from the Dino/SubSuezo. I didn't even know it was possible for an E rank enemy to do max damage. It's not even the worst monster I've seen in DX, at least in stat total. In 2, my friend found a purebred Hopper with 4s in everything.

      Yikes. I pale to imagine something that bad. I knew that sort of thing was possible, I just hadn't run into anything comedically terrible. Yet.

    Your coverage of these releases is definitely appreciated. I want more support for these titles and monster raising games across the board. I'm mostly here for the monster raising game coverage. I also enjoy your coverage of old rpgs tho. When you combine nostalgia with monster raising? Even better! owo (Jade Cocoon playthrough?)

      SOON (TM). It's one of those games that is asked about a lot and I've been meaning to investigate and go it due justice. Maybe I should ask Ed for help on that.

    We all have our own niches, Snek, and I feel you can do a lot worse than Monster Rancher. I kinda like the variety you have for your channel, whether or not something interests me at the time. I'll confess I haven't been paying attention to the Trials of Mana LP, but I look forward to the MR1 LP and the majority of stuff you cover on Mondays. I'd imagine that this a good balance between sticking with a series, while also keeping things fresh.
    On that note, I can't wait to dive back into Monster Rancher when I decide to pick it up. Opportunity cost and all. You've made MR1 look like a ton of fun, despite how much I know and adore the sequel! And omigosh, your Worm-to-Pixie reminds me so much of my Mew/Hare. Sassy little buggers, the two of them. XD

    • @TheHipsterSnek
      @TheHipsterSnek  3 года назад +1

      I think MR1 gets a bit of a bum reputation, given how much love was poured into MR2 - and how quickly the sequel came out on the heels of the first. They're both great games and worth owning!
      And, yeah, Creamhorn was a willful little bug and I actually tripped the cocoon event without even meaning to (just dumb luck) and then she was a beautiful butterfly. Still a willful little bug though.

    I'd like to point out that these aren't ports of monster rancher 1 and 2, the games we got in NA. These are (mostly) straight ports of monster farm 1 and 2 (The Japanese versions) with all the bugs & oddities that those versions entailed.

    • @TheHipsterSnek
      @TheHipsterSnek  3 года назад +2

      Mostly right, and I did kind of a bad job wording that in retrospect. I didn't exactly clarify this in the history bit and my summary at the end may have been too abridged - in that I was saying the core gameplay loop was the same and I didn't mean to say that they were just port-forwards.
      What I SHOULD have said, to be more historically accurate, was that Monster Farm 1 and 2 were ported into the mobile ports - Monster Farm 1 and 2 Refine - and that those updated ports were what made up the DX Bundle. The Refine games had a number of bug fixes and improvements, all of which were part of the "DX" in the title. Sorry for any confusion!

    • @calebb7012
      @calebb7012 3 года назад +2

      @@TheHipsterSnek In my case I thought they were straight ports too, KT really doesn't make it known either. Just wanted to point it out in case anyone else found themselves in my situation where Phoenix couldn't learn certain techs he would have access to in MR2, puzzled me for a whole week until I figured it out.

    I had to remap the buttons under Steam's View > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings and change X→O, △→X, O→△
    Okay, favorite monster: Arrow Head
    I like how it has a hidden tail that it plays around with and also how it walks around clumsily and does flips on the ranch. In battle, using Cyclone on Silver Face and watching it turn into a jumble of mess made me question the extent of my English vocabulary because I couldn't find the words to describe it

    "its not a remaster, its just polished a tad and launched on new hardware"
    that's...that's a remaster. if you're thinking of things it's not, it's not a "reboot," (new game that restarts continuity/plot) nor is it a "remake" (ground-up remade)

      Yeeeeeah. Shows what a little proofreading can do for a script. Not my best choice in wording but, thankfully, not the dumbest thing I've ever said on a hot mic.

    *Due it's local price I don't have it yet, I'm not really interested in competitive so it might kill the game to me, I did played a lot in Play 1 but I think the in game content is not really interesting for me anymore, I really like side quest and other mechanics to do between the story, I've already beat this game a lot n the lack of features is a killer to modern days, I'm not even talking about the graphics, but the port could be a remake n make a better UI for PC, imagine if we had lots of secondary content, excluding the expedition, something like MR 4 in the dungeons, although it gets boring pretty quick, but we could interact with monsters more often, I would love to see a mod that remakes the whole game to add those side quest like content, but I guess no one would take the time for this niche player base, I still love MR 2 but again as I said, it needs more secondary content to maintain me entertained, specially old games like this*
