It’s for the errors that I seem to learn so much. Thanks for including those that you had made and the corrective action taken. We learn by the mistakes we make but if we learn by those made by others - we will be better off.
I'm ripping up my deck (installed circa 1986) to make some repairs/changes. The framing is all pressure treated and for the most part it is in incredible shape. What I did notice, however, and this relates to your use of the joist tape, is that there were some joists that had significant water damage. My theory, is that the nails (yes, they nailed this deck down!) when moving over the years, let water into the boards. People forget that pt lumber is only surface protected. Any penetration/cut in the wood will let moisture in and then it's a countdown to the rot to settle in. So, yeah, I'm team tape now.
As always, great documentation-- more importantly, I respect the drive and hustle it takes to write and produce these videos every week. You are an effective small business owner. It is inspiring to watch this all happen from the outside. Be well.
As a non-native english speaker, I've just learnt a new word: joist! 😂 thanks Johnny. It's funny to me how you guys in US have a specific tool or material for ANY situation! Your shop must have one massive room packed with jigs hehehe Maybe it's why you are more time efficient than us in Brasil. We have to be way more creative here.
Last summer I worked on a composite deck where we also had a band trim around the edge and routed the raw edge. We glued and screwed some of the miters and in the effort of cleaning the glue with acetone we realized that the acetone stained the raw routed edge darker and it was basically a perfect color match to the top of the material. Kind of a happy accident, so we used acetone to stain the entire deck perimeter where we routered the edge. Pro tip of the day lolol
Using a biscuit joiner to cut slots for hidden fasteners on the picture framed solid boards, works very well if you choose to use hidden fasteners that are the “T” shape.
Awesome job and great work, but... It's like I was stabbed at the end by that masonry patio. Anyone else get "created the Mona Lisa then painted over it" vibes? 😂
Why build the wood /trex deck in the first place ??? Just build the paver patio right up against the house. It’s done all the time. Put a small expansion joint or even a stainless slotted drain/gutter along the house
@@rmaloney9976 Right? For all of the trouble that this tiny deck caused. From the protruding joist tails, the sealing, the blocking, all of the finicky and fiddly work to get the details of the facia just right... It all just seems like it was for a whole lot of nothing. If I HAD to do it this way, and was intent on butting a masonry patio up close to it, I think I would at least have just omitted the front fascia entirely and just wrapped the entire front of the rim joist with butyl and called it a day. I don't know, I mean I guess there's something to be said about the landscaping and hardscapes being less permanent than the house structure itself so there's that. I just can't get over how extra and purposeless it feels. Either way, not my project; not my business! 😉
Just a note: Add the tape. Even pressure treated will rot over time. 20 years ago, I put up a deck, tape had just started to be a thing. It was ‘expensive’ so I only taped the areas closest to the house. This year, there were a few areas of the deck that needed to be replaced… The joists that were not taped had actually started to rot. All the taped boards were like new.
Haha I loved the joist counter. I cant remember which part in the series had another specific word, but there was definitely one you could've used a counter for. Great vid as always.
Fantastic, dude! It's looking beautiful! 😃 Too bad they didn't let you make a bigger deck... But it's looking great either way! 😃 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I agree that using this composite materials and making mitered corners is tricky. We all like to have nice, tight joints but this requires spacing for expansion. It is almost counterintuitive.
Hi Johnny, great video! Thanks for your tips and tricks. I'm getting ready to do my deck. Can please provide link to the magnetic piece on top of your driver? Thanks.
Are there composite options that look more like real wood than this? I like the benefits of composite and lumber is insanely expensive right now. But I’m just not a huge fan of the look of composite. Obviously everyone has different taste, not trying to knock your choice here. Love this series it’s been super informative!
Yea man, no worries and I can totally see what you mean. This decking matches our deck on the main house, which is why I went with it. I like the look of some of the decking from Fortress, they've got some nice options.
Your main problem with the 1st piece of picture frame was that you were drilling the screws into the edge of the facia boards, instead of the joists. That's why they all kept tilting.
Okay not a bad job, but next time stagger your joints, this will allow for a better appearance even though you hid it, there are plenty of other reasons we suggest staggering, but looks good keep up the work
I am about build a deck myself and this helped with the facia boards. However it may be okay for your size deck but you should never use hidden fasteners with the grooved version of composite boards. Square edge boards should be used.
Good except for BAD idea of routing off the pvc capping to round the edge. The composite core IS made with some wood and when bare it can absorb water and mildew, rot and all the things that capped boards are supposed to eliminate. (the ends are not caped BUT are not seen)
@@craftedworkshop Exactly why the suggestion to gap the ends so they can dry out. BIG difference :THE ENDS are hidden so any discoloration is not visible.
Tell me about it, kind of a waste of material but I didn't want to leave it uncovered just in case you could see it through the gap between the block and deck!
Wow I was waiting for it to get dark. Me thinks Johnny is funded by his dad,or his customers are extremely rich 😳. Would be nice to have this much time on jobs
I am my own customer in this case, Brett, so I can definitely take my time. Also, I've got a newborn and a toddler so I don't typically work late. Definitely self-funded and these videos are how I make a living!
Why do this composite deck any way ? Why not just build the paver patio right against the house. Use a small expansion joint or a stainless slotted gutter. It’s done all the time and would be far less expensive than building this then covering it all up
I know it’s just the way the videos are published, but I just keep thinking, “Man, he spent all that time and money remodeling his shop and he’s been trapped out in his back yard for months. What a waste of rent on the shop.”
I mean, you're not wrong! I haven't spent much time in the shop since October but that'll definitely change once I get to building furniture and cabinetry for inside the house. Also thinking of making some outdoor furniture for the patio just to take a break from construction and get back into the shop.
Great video ogriopher. Terrible carpentry. Why Bother having an apron When you have a patio? Why bother with the deck at all with a patio? That entire deck was a complete waste of time and money

We use Hardie soffit material for the fascia and paint it to match the trim, it’s a nice look.

How does the boards expand when it has been fastened and glued down?
Is it me or does this tool pre drill the holes on the edge of the boards to high? Also seems like 1/4” gap is too big maybe 1/8 to 3/16?

Plastic expands when it gets hot. Just following the directions of the manufacturer.
