  • For years, Republicans have argued that the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell explains why the mass murder of 19 students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, has again proven that Republican plan will never work.

They (law enforcement) froze, they were unprepared and they waited an hour. They know their handguns will not protect them against an AR-15. So they chose NOT to engage. Same thing happened in the Florida mass killing. The "leo" that was at the school ran away from the area with the active shooter.

An fully trained armed guard is a deterrent, but not a solution.
No doors other than front entry, with a security guard present, may prevent tragedies like Uvalde.
Teachers are trained to teach, and many have dedicated years to teaching. But they should not be expected to become armed guards. I don’t know what the solution is, but I pray someone is smart enough to find one!

Only police officers and federal agents can step in that zone with a gun. It's the reason why none of these schools can higher armed security to protect the children. "They didn't take action because they are human?" No, each officer who has fired at innocent people, spent hours per week at the shooting range, etc. knows their job. Who gave the order to stand down and stand around? No one disobeyed an order to enter the building, because the order was never given. I'd like to see officers be "human" enough to spare the life of a sleeping resident or compliant driver. Everything else, I agree with.

The selection process is poor, the training is poor, and the leadership is poor and often more political than professional.
