Lately there's an Irish guy called Connor (maybe he changes names, dunno). His story is that he came to study at Pompeu Fabra and got his backpack stolen. first is gonna ask you to contact his mom and is gonna make you send a message su some random Irish number and after talking for a while he's gonna start asking you for money to make a phone call home because his phone got stolen. The ability they have to detect their potential victims is crazy. I work near Plaza Cataluña and when I go to work looking like a local they never talk to me but when I'm walking with family or on a weekend I suddenly become a target

I want to thank you for all your useful information. I visited back in February. It was probably the best vacation ever. The taxi from the airport we got from the rank outside the terminal was just over 20 euros and dropped us on La Ramblas near our accommodation. I spent that much time researching for my visit, it honestly felt like I was at home and not a new place I'd never been before. Only dodgy occurrence was in my last few hours and I needed a second helping of the awesome Mascarpone filled croissant from Hofmann's Patisserie. A vagrant looking fellow was stood in a doorway with his hand out. I didn't have any cash and politely said "No" and just kept walking as he shouted "Fil di puta!" at me! I laughed to myself because I understood what he was shouting. He saw me again a little while later while he was stood with a bunch of other men and shouted "Americana puta!" at me. I just had to chuckle to myself! The point is, I did what you recommended and just kept walking. Thanks for your help, Patrick!
Nice one! I really like the Simpson-Cardboard-scam. A couple of weeks ago I managed to see this guy live in the Gothic Quarter. And if you keep watching him you can see how his - I guess pinky - finger is provinding the movements to make them "dance" to the music". What about those guys with those colorful flashy things at mostly Las Ramblas or Catalunya? They always shoot those things up in the air and sometimes catch them. Is it merely a distraction for maybe some of their partners?
You can always use a passport card for identification and this is not valid for regular international travel but it’s a valid ID. Leave your passport where no one can get it.
I'm an introvert, so I'd never fall for some of this 😂 Thailand is the same, though. A random dude with a lizard distracted us while he took my friends phone off the table. But like that's obvious, don't leave your stuff on the table.
We have just returned from BCN. We were too late to get tickets for the Sagrada, it was sold out on all the official ticket sites. Only one site still had some on offer, albeit overpriced. We took a chance. We finally received an email from China with the tickets attached. Until the very end I thought we had been tricked, but to our astonishment the tickets were actually legitimate. But next time we'll book in advance.
That bracelet thing happened to me once in Milan. It was the first and only situation where I was attempted to get scammed, so I was a bit confused during this situation and let him tie the bracelet around my forearm. Of course he asked for money afterwards. But thankfully, he remained nice even after I refused to give it to him. And I even got the bracelet off of my arm myself (without scissors). Ever since, I'm not falling for this again!

I was in villages along the Camino de Santiago and yes it was wonderful talking to the locals in Spanish and to absorb the culture. Why go to a foreign country and then shun the locals?? You can have Barcelona, not going anywhere near there. Well that’s my point of view but you all do what you want and then regret going there.
Thanks for the great advice, Pat !!! Appreciate it! Quick question… i usually use credit cards to pay anything. Do i need to carry cash with me in Barcelona? Can i get away with credit cards for all places such as restaurants, museums, public transportation etc., ?
The main thing is not to be afraid to be rude. The scammers rely on you being too polite to say NO to them. Be impolite, be as rude as hell to them, a short "F*ck off" or raise your fist to them usually works. Remember, they are trying to steal your hard earned money, don't let them!
Im really nervous about arriving in Madrid Airport. Ill have my dog and my suitcases with me but im afraid that i wont have much awareness and someone will take my luggage or purse or even my dog. Can anyone give some tips about arriving at the airport and how to stay safe. Thank you
Ah yes, Barcelona, the only place I've had my pocket picked, and that was more than 30 years ago, and Barcelona had that reputation even back then. Shame the authorities are so powerless against crime.
when i was in the train station me and my friends were asking some guy for the directions and his friends was with him so i was asking him where he is from while he gave me his phone to write my country name at the same time he was trying to open my bag so i pushed him away and i told the police and i was pointing at him but the funny thing they didn’t do anything they said you can do a report it will take you three days 😮
I had one guy approaching me and showing his phone which said, ”You are being followed, Watch out!”. He told me he was undercover police that helped tourists, but he was a scammer himself. A colleague of his followed me and my gf for 15 minutes before giving up.
It's great to be aware of these things, but I have to say I was not bothered at all in Barcelona. I have Spanish ancestry and was speaking Spanish and Catalan the whole time I was there, so not being obviously American probably helped! If you stay away from the Ramblas and can blend in--it's not a big nuisance. The scams and petty theft are nowhere near as intense as what you might experience in Latin America. In addition to a photo of your passport, a picture on your phone of the key pages and/or a scan that you can access in your Google drive is also helpful.
What you forgot to say about the people who are mute and try to get you to sign a piece of paper: they will try to pickpocket you underneath their clipboard.
When I was travelling in Barcelona, I did see some people with monks clothing with some paper. Thanks to watching this video, I knew I had to be suspicious of them. I kept a serious face and walked straight, and those people didn't even bother approaching me. Being an Asian solo female traveller, I knew I had a greater chance of being clocked as a tourist, and had a higher chance of being harassed. But nothing happened during my 5-day Barcelona stay. Keeping a resting b*tch face, putting my arm on top of my PacSafe crossbody bag at all times, and looking around every now and then to see no one is too near me did the trick.
How the rose is a scam? They dont force you to buy lol just basically say no and they go away from what i expirienced

Exactly, and they are not even that annoying. You can just say a simple «no, thanks» with a smile and they leave you alone. They are just poor people trying to make a few euros in a honest way!
I saw a naked man calmly walking along Las Ramblas, the busiest street in Barcelona, minding his own business. It would have been around 2008 or 2009. A stallholder told me she saw him every day - naked! Actually he was wearing flip flops, so not totally naked. But it did cause some astonishment. I'm not sure Barcelona allows public nudity these days.
will go this February 2025...even though I saw anti tourist protests last week... a Filipina famous vlogger in Barcelona told me that it was just one time protest and mostly against the Brittish... I really want Barcelona...I will take note with is one coz I have a 9yo son
Just came back from Barcelona and do not want to go back for more. Be aware that what you see, usually from vlogers, may not match the reality. Barcelona is crowded, loud, busy, dirty city. Stay away from most attractions and you will find areas that are much nicer, pleasant with green parks. The food quality and prices in all tourist areas are high with so so food. The prices and quality outside of the main fares are much better. The spanish food packs a lot of fat, carbs and cals. No salad to be found anywhere, same with fruit on most of the menus. I did not see any crime and felt very safe during the day and at night, traveling alone. Not a place I would ever want to come back.
The easiest way to avoid these scams is simply NOT go to Barcelona. Think about another destination to enjoy your days off until the townhall of Barcelona organizes its public security better.
Be careful at the airport! Went to pick up my rental car, someone tried to tell me there was something wrong with the tire, while his friend reached in the passenger seat for my bag.

Well that’s my point of view but you all do what you want and then regret going there.
I'm leaving tomorrow for Spain and spending a full day in Barcelona
Nice!
Thanks for the great advice, Pat !!! Appreciate it! Quick question… i usually use credit cards to pay anything. Do i need to carry cash with me in Barcelona? Can i get away with credit cards for all places such as restaurants, museums, public transportation etc., ?
In almost all cases you won’t need cash. You can always take some out, but you don’t need a lot.
@@PatrickGuideBarcelona cool, thanks!
Thank you
Thanks next month is our trip to barcelona i am ready but careful❤from israel❤
Have fun!
Pickpockets are no joke, we caught one redhanded on the metro, thankfully didn’t steal anything, but just fyi. Love spain but jeez.
Ah yes, Barcelona, the only place I've had my pocket picked, and that was more than 30 years ago, and Barcelona had that reputation even back then. Shame the authorities are so powerless against crime.
They may be in on it.
Is Sant Pere a safe area to book accommodation when travelling alone (I am female)
No, beware, there are crocodiles on the sewers.

Be careful of the touchy feely ones as well. Don't wear watches or jewellery of value. Buy a 'my first watch' if you really need to tell the time
when i was in the train station me and my friends were asking some guy for the directions and his friends was with him so i was asking him where he is from while he gave me his phone to write my country name at the same time he was trying to open my bag so i pushed him away and i told the police and i was pointing at him but the funny thing they didn’t do anything they said you can do a report it will take you three days 😮
I had one guy approaching me and showing his phone which said, ”You are being followed, Watch out!”. He told me he was undercover police that helped tourists, but he was a scammer himself. A colleague of his followed me and my gf for 15 minutes before giving up.
can i buy tickets for la sagrada familia tickets in place ?
You need to buy them online
It's great to be aware of these things, but I have to say I was not bothered at all in Barcelona. I have Spanish ancestry and was speaking Spanish and Catalan the whole time I was there, so not being obviously American probably helped! If you stay away from the Ramblas and can blend in--it's not a big nuisance. The scams and petty theft are nowhere near as intense as what you might experience in Latin America. In addition to a photo of your passport, a picture on your phone of the key pages and/or a scan that you can access in your Google drive is also helpful.
Great advice!
7:05 how could they NOT charge for what you consume??
Go to Milan. Its cleaner, safer and better policed. Was in Barcelona 6 months ago, Milan last week.
but not nicer!
@@jozefknezo1606 In Milan you are welcome.
What you forgot to say about the people who are mute and try to get you to sign a piece of paper: they will try to pickpocket you underneath their clipboard.
Thanks, that was actually part of the dont sign anything section
Why would any tourist want to sign a paper to bring about changes or whatever?😂😂😂
@@rebeccagutierrez1960 I guess people just don't want to be mean and are taken aback by someone being deaf/mute.
These clown scammers and the white faced pic takers were in full gear Nov 1st 2024. Thanks for the heads up. We managed to avoid all the scams
Looking for a good VPN
Expressvpn
I was lost one day in barcelona and whenever i asked someone they thought im a pick pocket 😂
I would just avoid Las Ramblas altogether tbh 😅
I wouldn’t avoid it, but it’s not the place you need to spend your entire trip
@@PatrickGuideBarcelona true, it’s kinda hard to totally avoid it, especially on the way to the beach 🏝️
Maybe I’ll just not go to Barcelona.
Thanks
I went twice and never witnessed any of this.
Don't want to be pestered??? Don't go to Barcelona! SIMPLE AS THAT 👍
Solución simple: no lleves dinero en efectivo. Paga siempre con tarjeta.
I am sticking with Asia, better money power and less stress.
Think about another destination to enjoy your days off until the townhall of Barcelona organizes its public security better.
there are scammers all around the world. so we should stop travelling or what? nonsense
Roses are no scam. The rest are
👍🏼
