- A young man becomes a cult leader.
WASH CLUB is used with permission from Simon Dymond. Learn more at simondymond.com.
An aspiring journalist hears rumors of a strange cult on his college campus. He launches into his own investigation, and comes across a "club" where kids climb into tumble dryers at a 24-hour laundromat and see how long they can last -- a phenomenon that eventually goes viral and becomes potentially perilous.
Director Simon Dymond's thrilling short is a playful riff on David Fincher's FIGHT CLUB, which lends the story a tense and compelling pace. With sharp camerawork, a propulsive score and clever performances, the film is continually engaging and suspenseful.
The short is also based on scriptwriter Russ Sutherland's true story, who discovered the illicit underground wash club in his days at university -- and in his efforts to expose it, became its unwitting leaders. Dymond reached out to Sutherland after hearing his story on a podcast and realizing the spoken-word piece would translate well to the screen.
In a world where "ice bucket challenges" and "planking" quickly spread over social media, WASH CLUB explores what happens when a story spins out of control the farther and faster they spread. It's also a pure cinematic pleasure, and a compact yet powerful entertainment that will leave viewers wanting more.
Don’t you hate it when you accodentally become the leader of a shadowy cult? Happens to me all the time!

The first rule of wash club is that we do not talk about wash club.
Lemon Music lol
But by making that very statement you are breaking the first rule of the the the thing yeah the thing
The second rule of wash club is that WE DONT TALK WASH CLUB
+1 like I dont wanna ruin the "69" likes hehehehe
Making short films on the other hand. They didn't specify anything in the rules
"This isnt literature, it's journalism. You have to sell."
That rather hits the nail on the head, doesn't it?
I was always under the impression it was pretty much the opposite actually...
Alexander Zhmurov why and how
Amateur0Visionary what??
Yup sensationalism we’ve already known this tf 😂😂
There's an old journo saying: "Make it big, and if you can't make it big make it up".

An example of "you can stop a man but no the idea" even the man himself cannot stop it.
“You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea.” -Medgar Evers
@@aliciashanks5239 yeah that one! I forgot the correct quote. Thanks for the correction. 😄
@whatevster Exactly what I was gonna say hahahah
You guys are missing the real meaning, it's not about wash club and the idea, it's about how journalists adopt an idea and market it only to gain popularity and profit. Journalism don't care about right or wrong as long as it captures their target audience attention.
:/ reminds me of gone girl
Very true
Oi bruv you got a loicense for dem foughts, canna be finking. Alla toime wif na loicence.
joke
Or at least, a huge pitfall of the journalistic environment under our current societal system is that it makes it very difficult for journalists not to prioritize the latter.
So this all happened because one dude lied to make himself look cool
Not to make himself look cool, but wanting a quick piece of journalism for his upcoming assignment for university.
ViewfinderVlog he meant that guy who told that story about doing it. At the start.
Another +1 like cuz i didnt wanna ruin the "69" likes hehehehe
No, all of this happened because of each individual's decision and action.
That's how every cult starts. If the lie is good enough, it becomes a religion.
very meta commentary on journalism as a whole - how an idea with no substance can snowball into reality and take hold
Like love island
Yeah like Fox News
This is a satirical take on the “tidepod challenge”
it is
Don't see that.
👍
I fear I’m in deep in my Tom blyth spiral
Yes me too! The Hunger Games: Songbirds and Snakes, Billy The Kid and Wash Club are my faves rn
Tip: never touch blood or anything that looks like it. With your bare hands. NEVER
So I can’t touch Ketchup?
Yeah, I thought it was wine. Doesn't have the right colour for blood. Too dark/mahogany.
Yeah I found that very disturbing
Kpop Amy I don’t know a single human being who would reach onto the ground and wipe a strange substance with their finger. Let alone something like blood. Honestly the weirdest part of this whole short.
Do you mean floor jam? But what else am I gonna spread on my biscuits?
I like how he makes sure that his shirt is dryer safe
Before commencing with his first meeting at the laundromat.
No double knits for him.
"police are set to find the ringleaders behind this dangerous game"
> secretly just a journalist wanting to have something interesting in an article.
These types of cults usually take you to the cleaners...
LOL. Best comment yet.
@@@simonthedymond
We need to deter gents from taking up this challenge!!!
Now that is dry humor.
i just watched because of the plot:
the plot: tom blyth
I love how people are here because of Tom blyth
Wash club, how crazy! What will these young kids think of next, eating tide pods?!!!
EveryDayTrucker These kids would be 40 now
You know I had to watch for Tom blyth
I like the sound of "Spin Club" better.
I do too but it sounds like its a biking class
@@MNeathway does it take place in the 90s? Even if it does, it wasnt made in the 90s

The First Rule of Wash Club, check the lint trap.
As I watched this little did I know that my ipad was connected to the speaker that mum is currently using for book club in the living room and they have probably had the weirdest experience ever
Your mum and her friends are going to trade book club for wash club
Hahahahahaha
Legend has it the girl is still in those very dries
First rule club of wash club, you don’t talk about wash club. Second rule of wash club, only use HE detergent.
I noticed that about fight club too
Why do people always touch blood spots in movies?
because it makes good sauce
I know, right?
Mmm tasty
Because it's cinematic and spooky
some people understand human anatomy and understand you ain’t always gonna get STD’s from blood it’s jus blood breh.
Honestly tom blyth here would make a good Viktor for an Arcane live action
There was a definite Fight Club vibe to this. I'd like it to have ended where the guy who lied about this experience is actually the main character's split-personality.
This is concerning. Even youtube knows we are obsessed with Tom Blyth 😂
would've called it Tumble Club...
Fr that's what i was thinking the whole time. Sounds innocent but intriguing? Like a play pen for young adults needing escape from the evergrowing existential dread.
my bb looks so good here
hey girly you don't know me but...
hes mine??
I love his face when he first walks in the door at 9:44 -- "Wow, this definitely looks like the wild and crazy bunch that I expected."
There must be thousands of people around who are desperate to belong to something barely exclusive. Even things like product brands and social/political perspectives seem to attract non-critical adherents. And crowd momentum dynamics are scary. Whoa. Great short. The dick-ish prof was spot on. Well done!
I could agree about social perspectives and brands, but politics?
Awesome short-film. And man I love love the anamorphic lens look. Just pure cinematic.
What if omeleto became the ring leader, because dumb college students see this video, and think huh that might be fun even though I might die...
Hate when I accidentally become the leader of a cult, it's so annoying.
I love this: At 8:53 "driers" is red underlined (the preferred spelling is "dryers"). And he totally IGNORES it!
Brilliant journalist in the making. Not only is he spelling-impaired, but doesn't know what spellchecker is.
Now THAT'S an accurate depiction of *jernalism*
Lol. Kids these days can’t even use punctuation if their computer doesn’t do it for them 🤦♀️ I’ve had younger work colleagues write up case reports for the ambulance as one long ass paragraph
2 weeks for an assignment worth 70% is plain cruel!

I found this on his old Julliard resume, you can't even compete with my obsession. Jk lmao but this was low key so good...I watch this channel and they just so happen to have a short film with my fave actor? Crazy.
omg coriolanus snow!!!
A student unwittingly promotes a dangerous club - in the service of mystery and journalism - then desperately tries to disband it before it spreads further.
Is this the dude from the new hunger games movie??
Yep, crazy innit? First you go from accidental cult leader and then the thing you know, you're trying to keep a girl you fall in love with alive.
yesss
I will never look at a washing machine the same way
After watching a few documentaries about cults, this one missed an important part which is the leader has direct contact with people, not just over a phone or messages. Another characteristic that they missed is that it usually takes a long time before they make their followers do dangerous stuff. Months should have gone by not just days.
If follower is daredevil its much faster and there are peoples that getting in bad stuffs within less than a day like those blind dates/ meet ups.
You must have watched traditional cults, but the one in the film seemed to me how future cults will evolve. So, the traditional stages of cult formation, nor other aspects may hold true.
The story isn't about cults. Sure at the surface it is, but it's actually about how journalism can change and mislead groups of people simply to get a few readings.
youtube knows me WAY too well 😭
It's sort of the Tide-pod trend of the late 90s...
Ricca Shaps lol tide pods didn’t even exist in the 90’s🤣
There were no tide pods in the late 90's my friend.
He said sort of the tide pod trend of the 90s, not that there were tide pods in the 90s
@@ECnations true he said sort but he also said 90"s which makes his statement invalid. Maybe sort of like the 2000"s would be more accurate. I didn't know of a tide pod in the 90's so it can't be sort of like it lol.
@@robincorprew9007 sort of the [example] trend, not saying that trend in the 90s
Kids do not try this at home, you could suffocate , and there is a very high chance of injury and death when being in the washing mechine

So this is what Snow studied in college at the Capitol. Journalism.

TOM BLYTHHH MY BELOVED
First law of journalism - don’t become the story!
Clever they used the late 90s to early 2000s time period.
I am so glad i don't live in England anymore. people tHERE have really lost it.
where do you live now?
3:44 When you're so hungry you can't believe you actually cooked food but it's Effing hot as helll!!
I've been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower, but you make more money as a leader.
clicked cause of tom blyth no regrets
WHERE DOES HE LAND?
On top 😉
That was sick... What it's like to be in dryer...
Don't really understand how this portrayed him becoming the accidental leader of a "cult". This wasn't really a cult, and more of seemingly another dumbass trend that people started to do.
This one TOTALLY spun me out!!!
this gives me bandersnatch vibes
I was looking for this comment! I defo agree🎬
This reminds me of the Blue Whale game too that became viral.
Wash club.. sounds interesting 🤣
Kshitija Iyer first rule of wash club WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT WASH CLUB
I looked up is riding in a drier safe, and when I looked under the "driver safe" search result, I saw "Drier worth it"
That is a bad sign.
SHES NOT PURRIN SHES ROARING
I don’t know how you would think getting in a dryer would be safe.
Wash Club turns into Fight Club 10:54 - until the Pac Man ghosts turn blue 11:12.
Prof: No extensions
Student: Guess I'll die then
Tom? Wait tom? Lmaoo how did i get here
College = college? Or college = university?
college is college. Uni is university. College is for the hoi polloi getting an a level. University is for ponces wasting their daddys money.
Um... but you know that Unis like Cambridge have different colleges?
tom blyth
This is so clever and unique I love it
"accidentally becomes leader if the cult he's investigating"- isn't exactly how I'd describe this film...
11:10 six year old me looking out the window of the chuckecheese ceiling play fortress trying to find my family’s table
Next: A journalist investigates a Shadowy American President! 😏😝😂
Nope, that won't happen.. she wasn't elected..
CHEETO NEEDS A WASH.
Maybe a PRAVDA jounalist. DA!
Its that guy from YOUNG DRACULA!! VANHELSINGS SON damn my childhood 😂😭
IS THIS TOM BLYTH?
Any reason why this is set in the Late 90s/Early 2000s? Was this kind of behavior actually a thing back then?
It is homework, it becomes a club then maybe a career. He could go underground.
How do you accidentally become the leader of a cult? 😂😂😂
Watch the short film and see for yourself
There's always so many questions afterwards
Very interesting.
tom looks so cute
Firsts rule of wash club, you don't talk dirty about wash club!
TOM BEST ACTOR EVER YAYAYAYAYYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAY YOU SHOULD DO A PART 2
1st rule of fight club you don't talk about it. 2nd rule of wash club you don't talk about it.
what?
exactly!
based on a true story ???
Allow me to be sceptical here... Even the simplest house hold washing machines have a security feature that prevents the program to run if it is too heavily loaded. I find it hard to beleive that tumble dryers in laundrette does not have that kind of security, and that they would start spinning if a 50 - 100 kg heavy person is inside...
Well 'based' upon a true story could mean it’s very exaggerated or differed to protect people's identities yet still get the point across yknow?
Всі ми тут через Тома Блайта, шановні😂
I'm only halfway through but cult seems a strong term
Lol poor guy just wanted to get good grades XD
