R.E. Roadie to MTBer - I have my road bike set up quite aggressive and low frontally. My MTB is a 2001 Cannondale F2000 26" wheels. It came stock with a 110mm stem and 590mm straight bars (26mm clamp). I lucked out in finding a Headshok compatible stem that was just 70mm long and fitted 720mm wide bars and feels great. I would recommend having a trail shoe if going clipless, something that varies more than a road shoe shape as it will feel more engaged when the cleat is further back. One day I will get round to buying a dropper post (although options are limited at 27.2mm). Most tweaks I have made are thanks to the GMBN how to videos so well worth a watch!
9:18 - I've also noticed my rotors ringing when I ride on smoot asphalt with certain speed and it is caused by the resonance from vibrations coming from the tyre knobs hitting the aphalt. That may also be the_applebyj's issue.
Thanks for the answer! And apologies for the little info too. SRAM codes, metallic pads and a standard axle on a Lyrik. I’ve managed to lessen it with some calliper adjustment but it’s not a problem on the trail.
10:00 i run an older MT-200 and the number of times I mistook brake pad play/flex and thought it was a loose headset is just 🤣. Noticeable when I lock the front brake and rock the bike forwards and backwards to check the headset. No noticeable negative effect on actual braking performace though. I wonder if this play/flex exists on other budget disk brakes.. 🤔
#askGMBNTech Hey Doddy, you made a video about making an xc bike more dh capable, but what about making a trail bike more xc capable (faster lighter) without breaking the bank. Cheers!!
The title seems like your running out of ideas, but the video shows your not. I don't even have a mountain bike anymore, and this channel is still the best to watch on cycling gear and tech, good in-depth coverage as always!
9:34 if it's a rotor with rivets the ymiggt be hitting the caliper. The caliper might be loose. If it's just after hard braking it probably is just the rotor cooling down. the best bodge i've done is using a pvc coupling as something to press fork seals in after a lower leg service, i found the black coupling you use on farm blue pipe works best for this as the internal width matches a 36mm stanchion fork and the external width is enough to not get in the way of the arch
Rotor "ding". I had a similar sound when one of the vents was hitting the edge of the pad when they moved a bit. This was further complicated by a floating rotor with very big windows AND a bodgy fit where the pad was not perfectly aligned (up/down) with the rotor. Almost like using the wrong adaptor for the calipers. So maybe when something happens that inner rotating edge is catching the outside edge of the brake pad. Or if worn even the backing plate itself!
Wandering bite point is a very well known issue on recent shimano brakes. You might be able to warranty it, but no guarantee replacement will be any better. Seems shimano haven't identified the root cause to permanently fix it. Tho the lower range brakes dont seem as effected.

Just wear what gives you confidence and don't worry about a second about what other people think. It's not their body... I ride XC and a bit of single track too. I am working hard on my basic ridding skilles, but I am far from there and I have noticed how sometimes even being too careful on trails can get can get you into all sorts of trouble. For that reason and because I have learned my lesson, I wear protection most would probably associate with downhill racing, but what do I care? The fact of the matter is that mountain biking IS dangerous and if you are unlucky you can really hurt yourself, even just ridding in the the woods. If you slide down a slope all kind of things can happen. Keep ridding and stay safe!
@@cookingconfessions yeah for sure it adds confidence, especially when I'm 36 and sensible thoughts come more often than they used too, which slows down learning process. Wearing pads is also good replacement for people using knee and arm warmers during transmission weather periods.

#AskGMBNTech: What are the options for having both brakes operated by a single lever? In 2019 I had a big crash that broke my T11 and T12 vertebrae and totally wrecked my C6. I'm back on my feet and hope to be back on a bike soon as well. The problem is my left arm and hand are are still very restricted in their movement and at best I'll only be able to hang on to the left grip, using any controls won't be an option. My right hand is better, nowhere near what it was but I should just about be able to squeeze a lever. I know cable brakes are easier to run from a single lever but my hand is very weak so a hydraulic setup is going to be needed. Any tips would be much appreciated. #askgmbntech my trek xcaliber 8, only a couple months old, has started making a popping sound in one of the gears. SRAM eagle SX 1x12. When checking the cassette I can see the chain is being pushed up by the gear in front of it, the popping coming from it snapping back into place. Twice a year I ride at Mammoth Mountain bike park, which is built on a 2400 m tall former (I hope!) volcano. The "gravel" is actually pumice, which acts like sandpaper if you fall off and slide. #AskGMBNtech Hey Doddy, I currently have SRAM Guide T levers and calipers on my 2020 Trance Advanced Pro 1. These brakes are leaving a lot to be desired and I've put off upgrading them, contemplating my options. I like the modulation of the SRAMs, but not the price of the better options. #AskGmbnTech I have a 7 speed freewheel and 3 sprocket pedals wheel (not sure what they are called). They keep spinning freely when on 7&3 or 6&3 and have to gear down and then gear up everytime while riding...
#GMBNTech How difficult is it to change out frame bearings at home? I see a special tool on the Santa Cruz web site. Can I use it with my threaded bearing press?
#askGMBNTech hi doddy, my bike (2006 specialized demo 8) has bolts on each side to hold the rear wheel on. If I wanted a new hub that has a thru axle, can I take the axle from my existing hub and put it in a new hub.
I had my first accident a couple of weeks ago, broken a rib but didn't realize it. What I realize is that I need kneepads, and always wear my gloves. Because when I had the accident that's when I removed my gloves.
Is there any 1x12 speed shifter that will allow me to upshift on the right grip and downshift on the left grip of the handle bar? #ASKGMBNTECH Just got a new Fuel EX 7 from Trek, already grabbed some things (nicer pedals, grips and valves) what accessories/hardwarewould you recommend? Always been hard tail before this.
For me, it's case-by-case. I remember being at the trailhead with my brother a year or two ago. We were about to try a new trail, and decided against elbow pads. Then, during speedy downhill through the mountain forest, we both ended up wrecking at the same turn. In my case, my elbow got the worst of it. Brother, on the other hand, hit a tree. So, I skip elbow pads for moderate trails I know well, which is most of my riding. That said, when going to new trails at or above my skill level - especially with techie sections - I think having them is best. Or, at the very least, might as well have a set in the pack!
Great add vice lol Doddy.. I do have a suspension related question.. ive got lyriks 180mm I run 3 tokens and have 100psi which gives me 25mm sag.. thing is I'm not using all my travel but I like the feel.. I have low speed at 10 from open and rebound 5 from full.. any ideas?? Im 106kg
#askGMBNTech could you do a piece with a medical professional on how to use the tech on our bikes to prevent common injuries. I'm thinking knee pain, undercarriage issues, hip pain, ankle injuries etc. basically anything that doesn't involve a crash.
How wide rims you have? Technically you could fit 3" tire to 19mm rim but you never should. Tire will become too unstable and won't perform the way it was intend to. Maxxis recommends 2,5" and other WT (wide) tires to be inserted on rims wider than 30mm. So can't tell you accurate unless you don't share your rim width.
Helmet, Gloves , Glasses and Knee pads should be the absolute base minimum for DH or even most trail riding. It doesn’t have to be the full of hard shell, just the bare minimum versions will drastically help you over nothing
#ASKGMBNTECH refitting, once great, older fork (2009 RockShox Revelation DualAir 140mm) with newer internals. What are the options and what would you recommend? Thanks much. Love the show.
Hi Doddy, my front brake keeps pulsing on downhill sections, after checking things through I found this is the centre lock loosening on hub. I keep tightening it as much as I dare, but it keeps working loose. You got any suggestions?
#askGMBNtech Hey doddy I ride a 140mm trail hardtail and would like to upgrade to some wider stronger rims without breaking the bank. Is it a good idea to change just the rims or would you advise bitting bullet and getting a full new wheelset. Keep up the good work, thanks Caspar.
#AskGMBNTech Recently got a new fork but thr steerer tube is too long, if I we're to cut it, is it necessary to file it in afterwards or is it just for looks?
#askgmbntech Can i put a 29 inch fork on my specialiced demo 8 from 2015 with 27,5 fork on right now? Will the geometry chance? And more inportantly will it work? Would i be able to run a mullet setup?
#askgmbntech I got a new hard tail a couple weeks back and it has a 140mm travel Marzocchi Z2. Only thing is, I’m really light and I needed the forks to be softer. I don’t have a shock pump so I bled some air at the top of the left leg by gently pressing an Allen key into the valve. However, the fork sucked down a bit, and I’ve lost 15-25mm of travel. It won’t return to full extension and I’m worried I’ve messed things up. What should I do?
#askgmbntech Hey Doddy! Love the show. I've got a 2019 Canyon Torque AL and the clutch of the rear Mech is a little bit to lose. Is there any way to make the clutch stiffer?

#askgmbntech Hey doddy, I often hear you guys reccomend a starting tire pressure of 25psi, but on my 29er wheels anything above 20 psi feels hard as a rock. Although this wasn't the case on my old 27.5 bike. Some people on forums say they're running around mid 10's, is that too low? Bike is a Trance X 29 2
#askGMBNTech i have sram code r brakes with 200mm rotor up front and 180 out back, i recently bought a hope float rotor in orange to go with the main colour scheme of orange and black on my bike. once i had installed it and put the wheel in the rotor made a rubbing sound against the pads, do u know how to sort it out or if they fit my particular brake?? sorry it's long
I "now" have elbow pads. 8 weeks ago i slipped with my front wheel off the trail. So the impact was with my under arm/elbow and the kinetic energy went into my shoulder. result: slightly broken shoulder / delta muscle completely torn up to the muscle belly. In retrospective... Should have bought elbow pads earlier.
#askgmbntech I recently upgraded my rear shock from a 150mm to 200mm and I really enjoy the extra travel, but I feel like the bike is a bit pitched forward because my fork is only 120mm. Should I up the travel on my fork? If so by how much?
#AskGMBNTech I have 740mm handlebars and want wider ones - is there anything unsafe about moving my grips past the end of the bars by 20-30mm each side to widen the feel of the bars, instead of buying new ones? I have Deathgrips so the plastic in them is quite strong.
#askgmbntech For my dropper cable routing, I stuffed dental floss in my downtube and vacuumed it out of the seat tube then taped the outer cable to it very firmly and then pushed the housing through while gently guiding it with the floss. After that, just feed the inner cable through the housing. It was nerve racking because the floss can snap at any moment but it worked in the end! Do you have a better way of doing it I should know of to do on my other bike?
What are the best tips for wild life mountain bike encounters? (Such as Bears, Mountain Lions or Snakes) I once had come across 3 mountain lions 40ft from the top of a climb and immediately u turned back from the way I came from at top speed downhill. They didn’t catch me, by the way #askGMBNTech

#askGMBNTech Hi Doddy I have been riding a bossnut evo as I couldn't afford anything better thinking of upgrading to the calibre sentry pro is this a good bike to upgrade to? Thanks love the vids
#AskGMBNTech Can I use any suspension oil as long as they're the right weight number? Fox forks usually require 20wt oil when doing a service and they usually recommend their own brand. Problem is Fox specific 20wt oil is hard to get these days and if you could find any in stock they're rather expensive. Motorcycle fork oils are much easier to get and a lot cheaper. Can I use them instead? The ones I see are labelled 20wt
#askGMBNTech Hey Doddy, I am replacing my wheels on my 26" bike and torn between going with the HG hub to reuse my ancient 3x9 driveline or switch to microspline/XD and doing the update to 1x11. Thoughts?
#askGMBNTech Hi Doody. Love the channel and the show. I have a 2020 Scott Genius 950. It has a Fox float 34 150mm of travel with twinlock system. It is my first full suspension bike. I’m loving it. I bought it because I like how versatile it is. I use it as a trailbike even bike packing. I like swapping 29 and 27.5+ wheels around. I’m planning to do some enduro races as soon as the pandemic ends. I know some EWS riders as Martin Maes run 150 mm travel both front and rear. I’m 1.63cm height and 95 kg. I’m a bit worry about the thin 34mm upper legs for rough trails and jumps. I was wondering if I fit a Fox 36 with 160mm travel, would that mess up the geometry? What if I set the flip chip of the rear shock to the high position? Would that help? Greetings from Chile.
#ASKGMBNTECH Is it worth putting sram butter on my stanchions or is it only useful when taking the fork/shock apart? plus is it good for anything else ?
#AskGMBNTech Hey Doddy, is it worth upgrading to 1x setup on an entry level bike? (groupset upgrade) I currently have Kapur 2, and am thinking between the Deore and Microshift if i do.
#AskGMBN When I wash my bike (I don't spray the pivot points directly and I don't spray directly at frame openings) water will end up in the frame. I recently took my seat post out and some water came out!? Is this bad? Love the channel and show. Cheers!!
Yes absolutely. I use 91% all the time. If I’m switching to/from organic pads and metal sintered pads I first prep my rotors with 800 grit sandpaper (or Scotch- brite pad) and lots of water. Then thoroughly dry/clean them with IPA. Then bed the new pads properly. Works great!
Yeah, it may not coast as good as using light machine oil, but that also depends on how good the components are, the difference might be negligible on low quality parts, but noticeable on higher quality parts. I've polished the internals before, and lube choice and amount really made a difference then, when everything was tight, clean, and smooth. Phil oil is a little thicker, it might stay in place longer.
@@willjones7132 Thank you. Your last point was what I was thinking. None of my wheels are high end and I'm not exactly technically minded so increasing the amount of time between services would be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Or would I be wasting my time as the calipers would then turn into the weak link? Cheers!
great show again daddy.
If your frame currently uses a quick release then a thru axle will not fit into the dropouts
After a couple of crashes I bought them. I am barely aware of having them on
I had my first accident a couple of weeks ago, broken a rib but didn't realize it. What I realize is that I need kneepads, and always wear my gloves. Because when I had the accident that's when I removed my gloves.
Is there any 1x12 speed shifter that will allow me to upshift on the right grip and downshift on the left grip of the handle bar?
While I can use the standard shifter with everything on the right, I’m more used to shifting just like a sim racer and my right thumb gets pretty sore from having to do all of the shifting

Can I use suspension grease on my mavic ID360 hubs?
Can i use 15mm pedal extender to widen my qfactor?

Just got a new Fuel EX 7 from Trek, already grabbed some things (nicer pedals, grips and valves) what accessories/hardwarewould you recommend?
#askgmbntech is there a tolerance level of how much wider a tire I can fit on my current wheels?
I have a question: Ok give it up...how did you bend the vise handle ????
Yes
Can you recommend me knee pads for enduro/DH which I can comfortably wear under trausers? Cheers.
#askgmbntech Can i put a 29 inch fork on my specialiced demo 8 from 2015 with 27,5 fork on right now? Will the geometry chance? And more inportantly will it work? Would i be able to run a mullet setup?
#askgmbntech
I got a new hard tail a couple weeks back and it has a 140mm travel Marzocchi Z2.
#askgmbntech
Hey Doddy! Love the show. I've got a 2019 Canyon Torque AL and the clutch of the rear Mech is a little bit to lose. Is there any way to make the clutch stiffer?
Jus arrived on the mtb scene with a Bizango hardtail 29er, back to riding a bike after about 20 years or so, hell of a lot has changed since the days of wheelys round the estate! 🤙😁 Lookin to get new flats, What's the difference between downhill pedals and enduro? #askgmbntech
Bike is a Trance X 29 2
yes
Hi GMBN. It would be nice to put questions as Chapters in youtube video.
#askGMBNTech i have sram code r brakes with 200mm rotor up front and 180 out back, i recently bought a hope float rotor in orange to go with the main colour scheme of orange and black on my bike. once i had installed it and put the wheel in the rotor made a rubbing sound against the pads, do u know how to sort it out or if they fit my particular brake?? sorry it's long
#askGMBNTech good combination of maxxis tires for a hardtail xc bike on rocky and loose dusty terrain?
Still not very safe
#askgmbntech
For my dropper cable routing, I stuffed dental floss in my downtube and vacuumed it out of the seat tube then taped the outer cable to it very firmly and then pushed the housing through while gently guiding it with the floss. After that, just feed the inner cable through the housing. It was nerve racking because the floss can snap at any moment but it worked in the end!
Do you have a better way of doing it I should know of to do on my other bike?
What are the best tips for wild life mountain bike encounters? (Such as Bears, Mountain Lions or Snakes)
I once had come across 3 mountain lions 40ft from the top of a climb and immediately u turned back from the way I came from at top speed downhill. They didn’t catch me, by the way

#ASKGMBNTECH Hi Doddy. My wife got a LIv Temp and she has a soft brake leaver. It has Tektro TKD149 brakes. Do I need the two syringe or can I gravity bleed the brake? It uses mineral oil if that matters. Thank you
#askGMBNTech Hi Doddy I have been riding a bossnut evo as I couldn't afford anything better thinking of upgrading to the calibre sentry pro is this a good bike to upgrade to? Thanks love the vids
Tool hack: 2x4mm allen keys instead of an 8mm?
#AskGMBNTech
Can I use any suspension oil as long as they're the right weight number?
Thoughts?
1x11 is so much nicer. I’d do that in a NY second.
#askgmbntech Which tires you suggest for road & bit offroad for Polygon Premier 5?
#askGMBNTech Hi Doddy I have a trek marlin 5 which is a 3x7 and I want to go to a 1x12 or 11 can you show me what hub matches what group set thanks
Ive had many crashes that ended with some messed up elbows but I will still never wear elbow pads
#AskGMBN
When I wash my bike (I don't spray the pivot points directly and I don't spray directly at frame openings) water will end up in the frame. I recently took my seat post out and some water came out!? Is this bad? Love the channel and show. Cheers!!
Can I use 90% IPA on my break rotors to clean them??
Yes absolutely. I use 91% all the time. If I’m switching to/from organic pads and metal sintered pads I first prep my rotors with 800 grit sandpaper (or Scotch- brite pad) and lots of water. Then thoroughly dry/clean them with IPA. Then bed the new pads properly. Works great!
Would Phil Wood Tenacious Oil be OK in a freehub?
Yeah, it may not coast as good as using light machine oil, but that also depends on how good the components are, the difference might be negligible on low quality parts, but noticeable on higher quality parts. I've polished the internals before, and lube choice and amount really made a difference then, when everything was tight, clean, and smooth. Phil oil is a little thicker, it might stay in place longer.
@@willjones7132 Thank you. Your last point was what I was thinking. None of my wheels are high end and I'm not exactly technically minded so increasing the amount of time between services would be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
#askgmbntec how would you shorten a dropper post travel?
I make sure I wear shin guards now. Crashed last year end of February and still have a hole in my shin down to the bone that won't heal a year, 15 different antibiotics and 4 blood clots later 🤦♂️
@@ark8tct Thank you! Much appreciated
a little surgery to close the wound?
@@RationalHuman-1 to repair it? Unfortunately I contracted MRSA in the hospital and the surgeon won't repair it until it's clear of infection and there's enough granulation to do a skin graft. Have a medicine pump attached to me 24/7 that pumps three times a day trying to get rid of it. Take care of wounds even if small, they can become a nightmare.
#askgmbntech what whould you asy abouth the 2014 stump jumpers rear shock. Abouth the auto sag and brain sistem and that thing on the rear wheel
#askgmbntech
I was recently going over the headset on my 2019 gt avalanche sport and noticed that the steerer tube was straight while the bikes headset is tapered. It is the stock fork that came with the bike and i was wondering is that safe/normal.
