- The Peterloo Massacre in Manchester on August 16, 1819 was a landmark moment in British history.
On that day, the local cavalry attempted to break up about 60,000 peaceful protestors who were campaigning for the right to vote. At least 15 people were killed and over 600 injured in the ensuing chaos. The event shocked the country, and is seen by historians as a pivotal chapter in the story of universal suffrage and democracy.
Listen to Andrew Duncan’s brilliant arrangement of Malcolm Arnold’s Peterloo Overture, recorded by Whitburn Band and Phillip McCann in 2002 as part of the CD ‘Victory’.
