Sorry to see so many misguided people in these comments.
Here’s a tidbit of information about the ending of WWII and the circumstances of Japans surrender.
Before the Atomic Missions to Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Department of Defense was preparing for a ground invasion of mainland Japan. In preparation of that they manufactured every Purple Heart medal they expected they would need for the fatalities and casualties, as Japan would mobilize every able bodied citizen to fight. Those Purple Hearts have been awarded to every fatality and casualty since WWII, in Korea, Vietnam, Both Gulf Wars, the war in Afghanistan and every other conflict in South and Central America, Africa and Asia. We only just recently got through the over 500,000 surplus medals that were ordered for the invasion of Japan. So the reality is choosing to end the war overnight not only saved American lives but saved the country of Japan as not much would have been left if we had invaded.

My father was in the invasion of Okinawa. He always said, if not for the dedication of men like General Charles Sweeney, he would have been killed in the invasion of Japan.
