A Ghost Story perfectly captures what filmmaking is about for me. Pretty much entirely self-funded with only $100k, Lowery assembled a team and shot it quickly, very open-ended, with an idea but not sure what t it would translate to on screen. There are a lot of experimental risks and a lot of vast, overwhelming ideas. The team only made it because they wanted to take a beautiful idea and show it to the world.
Probably my favorite movie of the year so far, and I can't wait to go back and revisit this later. Great review Chris, you definitely put a lot of my thoughts on the film into words.

I love movies that leave me feeling sad because that means some director took me on a journey and actually managed to make me care so deeply for a story and made me feel a way that most don't. I also deeply appreciate the realism in tragedy. Life doesnt always work out, you dont always end up happy at the end of the story, sometimes people die and the world isnt always such a bright and happy ending kind of place. Part of why I loved The Last Samurai, it had a sad but realistic ending.

the best of the best I agree. I think the average movie-goer is fairly justified in this though, they just want a good time distraction and thats fair. I watch movies in hopes that they might transcend typical storytelling and make me feel something else but I consider myself an avid movie watcher. I'm looking for a story that subverts what I expect and surprises me with how much I like it.

You have to remember, these are the same people that bred all the memes on here. Chris' fanbase has it's vices.
This is one of the most sincere reviews I've seen from Chris in a long time. He wasn't trying to overplay nor undersell the film; he is just genuinely trying to express the way this movie impacted him. For me, this is why I love film; and more broadly, storytelling. It has the power to move something inside of you. Somehow you've grown as a result of experiencing someone's vision. Like a near-death experience or something; you just won't be the same person afterwards.
Maybe a little dramatic, but I stand by it. Will most certainly be catching this film in theaters.

    • @StaticBlaster
      @StaticBlaster 2 года назад

True. We might think there's action but on the grand scope of it all, we are like tiny insects crawling upon the surface of a ball of rock suspended in space. Space is completely silent and there's a lot of terrifying things that could happen to the Earth but instead we bury our heads in the sand thinking that nothing bad will ever happen to the Earth and that 100 years is forever. I remember 2012 like it was yesterday. And that was 10 years ago. Only 1/10 of a hundred years. The message of this film: Live!!!! Because life is short.

Watched this film just now in September 2018 on youtube after your review Chris. It resonated with me on a deep level. The slow build allowed me to connect with the 'ghost' although at first I almost laughed. The specter was lost, yet driven for unknown reasons. The longevity of its journey was painful and moving. Ive lost 4 siblings and both parents. Watching this reminded me of what grief can achieve and also render unintentionally. I remember my grief and it felt like that ghost. Aimless, eternal and empty. I hoped while watching this I had not put those who passed in my life time in such purpetual sad circumstances. Immortality like that is not worth it. A beautiful and profoundly sad film. Your review is spot on.

I came back to this review just because I loved this movie so much. This movie hurt. It woke me up. It left me not knowing how to feel or think about what I knew. It just moved me. As for the exposition piece in the movie.. I don't know. I liked it. The movie is heavy and I felt like I needed that lighter moment. Also, I felt like the exposition wasn't necessarily telling me what is going on but rather how far this idea about life and inspiration and art can expand. And on a totally biased note: this is a discussion that my brother and I have on a regular basis in terms of art and how it extends past the here-and-now and tomorrow. I don't know, I feel like I needed that scene. Not to know what's going on, but to perhaps further the discussion past the movie itself and the very honed in ideas it presents.

I like that they made the ghost huge. It dominates every room. It's larger than life. Affleck is only 5'7" but that ghost is pretty intimidating actually. And then just sad. Eventually you come to see this bedsheet ghost as a person's actual soul. No personality is left, just blank, only the essence of the person is left to wonder, and watch the living. We all got tricked by movies FX that ghosts need to be glowing, transparent. But that original ghost design is pretty dark, when you really see it. A dead human in a shroud. Just existing. Only eyes for watching. Spooky stuff. Once you understand how to watch it, you get what the movie is doing, and you can just enjoy it. Good on you for giving it a try.

I was energized by this film as well. In fact, astronomy can make a person feel crestfallen as well as purposeless but in reality, astronomy actually excites and thrills me. It's awesome that we are Lilliputians on a tiny speck of dust in this virtually infinite universe and yet we can figure it all out through inquiry and empiricism. This is why I've always loved science and astronomy in particular. We don't have a purpose from a grand, cosmic perspective but the purpose to keep on living and of life in general is the exploration of oneself and to discover what drives you to want to see tomorrow. A job can do that. Your purpose to life is what you give it. It's not written in the sky. You are the author of your own life, so to speak. My rating of A Ghost Story: A+.

I totally agree with your every word. I saw the movie in Italian and I was really amazed to discover that there are almost no dialogues: it looked like a long theatrical sequence, the actors looked like actors of theatre and not of cinema. I also loved the choice of using that kind of camera (I don't remember its name), it gave the movie an old fashioned look and a special touch. The cast was brilliant, to me: Rooney is the perfect choice to face the theme of mourning and grief. By the way, you forgot to mention the sequence of the pie: 4 minutes of pain, for me, really. Rooney nailed it perfectly. And the ghost...is just sweet! I was deeply involved in his story and wanted to know how it would have ended. They way he "looks" at her wife is absolutely breathtaking, like if he still had a soul. What I still don't understand is: how did they make Casey walk with that sheet without any hole for his eyes?😂
Jokes aside, I must say I find David is such a really good director and I had it confirmed when I watched Ain't them body saints, another masterpiece! What I'm sorry about is the fact that these movies are like put in the corner, you know: because they're independent movies. I think they should have more success because they deserve a lot!

  • @sadboijokes
    @sadboijokes 3 года назад +4

So I generally love A24 films and I love stories that are slow and can take their time with certain elements. That being said, this movie felt extremely pretentious. And I don’t mean pretentious in the way of “oh it’s acting high and mighty and snooty.” I mean pretentious in its actual definition of “pretending to have more talent, value, or importance than is actually possessed.” It explored some of the most shallow concepts in some of the most shallow ways and I was really really excited for this movie. But when I watched it I found myself more bored than anything else.
Like am I missing something? And I mean that genuinely, what would I be missing while watching this. Because after I watched it with a friend, I genuinely attempted to defend it, not because I felt a genuine connection to it but because so many critics found it to be this absolutely incredible movie.
And truth be told, I probably wouldn’t have disliked it as much as I did if I actually connected with the characters in some way. But I just could not. There was no reason to do so. Generally, I can tolerate slow, quiet films but there’s gotta be something there worth checking out but this did not have that.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie but it legitimately confuses me how this movie gets so much praise when it feels like so much nothing. There’s certain scenes that feel like a teenager wrote them after discovering what nihilism is and the shots linger on emotionless, tensionless, quiet scenes for longer than they really have to. I can appreciate a movie taking risks and doing something different, but this really just felt like a big pile of nothing wrapped in a pretty bow.

    • @5EverGolden

Totally agree. Just watched it yesterday and felt really let down, especially seeing Chris’ review for it.
Aesthetically it’s so pleasing, but everything else really just feels flat. They spent so much time in the beginning with ridiculously long static takes but barely any after the mid point. Felt like that time spent in the beginning could have been moved elsewhere to add some more scenes to bolster the message of this movie.
Message fell flat, honestly. It felt like they couldn’t decide if they should tackle the existential aspect of it more or the emotional impact of what the ghost was experiencing. Didn’t feel connected to the ghost. Didn’t feel connected to the wife. Didn’t even feel that connected to the house. Crux of it just felt like a half baked idea that was dragged out into a long movie. The long takes sometimes just felt like a filler in an essay. Amazing how the entirety of Up’s emotionally impactful opening could probably fit into the pie eating scene alone.
Some of the musical choices felt questionable to me as well. (The first ghost to ghost telepathic conversation.)
Overall, I’m just not seeing what others love so much about this movie.

That scene with the guy talking about how life is meaningless or whatever (i don’t remember exactly) always sticks out in my head because it felt so juvenile. I am a hugely emotional person. If the movie is right, you bet I have tears. But there wasn’t a single moment in this movie that elicited emotion in me. It was just hollow. And Like i said. I just watched this..been meaning to for years but finally MGM had it streaming. It floored me! It's one of those extremely rare experiences where i feel like i could write an assignment on this movie. Hauntingly beautiful...profound. i think it totally divides people. I read some people thought it was pretentious but i think you need an extra level of emotional depth to really engage with it. I actually found it really profound.
I kinda agree with the 'explanation' prophetic rant from the guy in the kitchen, but i think it was supposed to have a slighlty eccentric view whilst 'ghost' is lingering in the background making the reality of his situation more powerful. Actually also there's the little hint as well in the background, that whilst the guy is being philosophical, everyone is captivated, and then they lose interest and continue with their party. I think this is trying to show that we all live in the moment and dont really like to think too much of the deeper meanings of dying without leaving a legacy behind. Theres so many messages in this movie. I really wanted to know what was on the note. When he was trying to get to it like an itch you cant scratch. It seemed to be a message that gave him the closure he needed...But that only makes the story more compelling.. the unknowing. After all, that is the mystery of the afterlife...

I actually had a personal Ghost experience once, I was going thought a tough time once and I heard my name being called in echo, a cold hand reach out to me but there was no one there. It was surprising but not scary for me really, so I know that they are out there sometimes reaching out tp the living. So do not fear them, just try to make sense of their situation if you can help them move on.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed this and gave it your 2nd highest grade, Stuckmann! I skipped out on my favorite Marvel character's most recent movie and checked out the following week instead just to watch this one on opening day because I really didn't want to miss this since only 2 local theaters were playing it. It dwarfed my expectations and absolutely moved me. Never really seen a supernatural movie like this one before. I'd also give it the same grade you gave it. For me it's up there with Dunkirk, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Baby Driver as one of the best all year so far.

My theory about the ending is that she probably wrote "I'm not coming back" as she had said she would write something she felt about the houses she's lived in and in case she comes back, so since she went through a bad experience with that house, i doubt she would come back. And notice how the other ghost vanished once he/she realized the person they were waiting wasn't coming back. And he vanished once he read the note because whatever the note said made him see that she wasn't coming back, so he moved on just like the other ghost did.

Actually, I believe Mara's ghost went back for him (remember the door opening by itself?). The note doesn't matter, he vanished once they meet again. That's my take on it.

I like the overall ideas and emotions the film bring into play and I don't mind films where not much happens
    but,
this film is very very VERY slow like verging on painful, I get putting your own effort into watching films and not being told what to feel at every moment but during those lingering shots (the majority of the film) its like 'okaaaaaayyyyyyy Ive had time to think about it and run through the emotions in my head now move the F on',
It actually takes you out of the emotion because you become so self aware that your being forced by Lowery to think 'deeply' about it with so little information being presented to you,
it was pretty to look at though just be prepared to stare at something for a long ass time

Kema D I don’t think it’s about the “making you think” but rather to show the passage of time grow. It goes from very, excruciatingly long shots (pie scene) to then progressively life moving on without him and how the world keeps spinning even as he is gone. For me at least

Hey Chris. Thanks for your hard work over the years. You're one of the only critics out there that actually is honest about and has a real love for the smaller finer qualities of films. I will be seeing this one now after watching your review. But, for my question, you talking about existential under tones in this film reminded me of a movie that came out over 10 years ago that i have never heard mentioned pretty much since it came out. It was called I Heart Huckabees and i was wondering if you've seen it and if you could do a review on it. I feel as though it is very underrated and has great performances throughout from people including Dustin Hoffman, Mark Wahlberg and so on...
