Why does sabaton write a song about a German ship? Because it's history...because it was a major event in WW2. Why is every song they do a war song? Why do they write a song about a nazi ship, and another song about an American War hero, or about a Swedish king, or a battle in Russia?
Because it's history, it's our past, and those who do not learn about, and learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.

The song is about the hunt and sinking of the Bismarck, not in honour of this ship. Also A LOT of fans had for a long time requested that Sabaton do a song about this event, so they did this as a gift to the fans, in between albums.

"I can't sink her with gunfire"! That is why. This battle defined the war in the Atlantic theater. The British needed to dedicate an entire fleet of capital ships to just stand on alert in case Bismarcks sister ship, Tirpitz, tried to break out. An entire Murmansk convoy was lost because the escort broke and ran just on the rumor of Tirpitz steaming towards them...

There is a legend about a crew member of the Bismark and I emphasize legend: the Bismark's cat named Gustav is said to have survived the sinking of the Bismark and was rescued by the crew of an Allied ship, they then called the cat Sam. The incredible thing is said to have happened afterwards - the ship that Sam was on was also sunk and the cat survived and was then taken into control of the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal. And the legend says that the aircraft carrier was also sunk and Sam survived the ship's sinking for the third time. Then no crew wanted to have him on board anymore because he was seen as a harbinger of bad luck. He then spent his twilight years in a British Navy retirement home on Gibratar and is said to have been 15 years old. The Legend of Unsinkable Sam.

Why? Cuz it's history. Every side has stories & people fighting for their country. Humans w/courage & sacrifice & families at home. If u hv familiarity w/Pacific War, American dive bomber pilots (US Navy Aviators didn't use WW1 era bi-planes) approached Japanese ships as very steep angles. Japanese Sailors were amazed at American Aviators courage. Why bring it up? Battle (in North Atlantic) this song is abt was earlier in WW2. Royal Navy used bi-planes off their Aircraft Carriers. They approached at very shallow angles (exposing 'em to even more enemy fire). Saying Royal Navy Aviators had "courage" may be a disservice (was more than courage). Also, may sound like semantics to someone who nvr served in the Navy, but please call 'em Ships. There's a difference btwn Ships & Boats (not just size). Not trying to "beat you up" on RUclips. You're Exposing yourself to things you're not familiar with (more than many do). If I sound like I'm criticizing, it's not out of disrespect, I'm trying to give constructive criticism. Sabaton also did WW1 song abt The Red Baron & a WW2 song called "Hearts of Iron." Both "German" & both great history.

The Bismarck was a huge thorn in the side of the Allied. They spent a lot of time and effort hunting it. The fear of it was hindering convoys and troop deployments, and it achieved an almost mythical status which is spoken of to this day. The hunt for it was a magnificent story, with lots of bravery and heroic acts by the Allied. Much of that is shown in the video. The song is about Bismarck as it was the target of the hunt, and because it was built as a status symbol of Germany at the time. The lyrics reflect this. When it was sunk, that was a devastating blow to the Kriegsmarine.

You better know the story BEFORE listening to the song. This is NOT a reproach - just for the future. Perception changes. For example, the moment in the video when (sunk 70 years ago) Bismarck emerges from the "fog" of history. You can appreciate its size and power in the same frame. The diameter (caliber) of the projectile for the main guns is 380 millimeters. HE was rightfully considered the pride of Germany, as was his sistership Tirpitz.
By the way, Japan at that time had its own ships - the pride of Yamato and Musashi. These 2 sisterships were the largest in the world at that time in history.
And the history of these pairs of ships is, in general, mystically the same.

They made a song because Sabaton doesn't take sides, they simply tell the stories of men and women who fight in War. They stay neutral to all sides and tell the heroic deeds of Soldiers from all of history. This allows them to cover all facettes of Warfare in history. They are Storytellers, modern Bards if you will and not judge or jury to times long since passed. They don't glorify any action or motive. Therefor they made a song telling the story of the Bismarck. I dont know if this comes across as rude so i apologise in advance if it does, English is my second language after all.
Anyway I liked your reaction and if you are interested; Sabaton History is their very own History-channel with videos for almost every song they've written.

First of all, Bismarck is named after Otto Von Bismarck who is the guy who founded the modern state of Germany. Before he united the country it was a collection of independent kingdoms. Secondly, this song is about the sinking of the Bismarck who was the first of the 2 Bismarck class warships (the other being the Tirpitz). What’s so important about this story is the fact that the Bismarck was such an effective warship that the royal navy had to send an entire fleet to hunt him down (yes I used him & not her because German ships are referred to as male) & finally sink him.

The cool thing about the biplanes is they are outdated old. Called ‘Swordfish’ were beasts. The Germans couldn’t hit them because of how slow they were. One torpedo took out the rudder controls causing her to move in a straight line. The Prinz Eugen was to carry out the mission of taking out Ally ships. The Bismarck sank by ships that were able to catch up to her.

As the end title to their video says: War knows no nation.
If you think about it it is a pretty deep message. Most people who ever fought a war would rather not had to. There are heroes, survivors and casualties on both sides. But for many of them they really had no choice. The people fighting have more in common than not.

Bismarck was a Battleship, Hitler's pride and joy, the ship sank the HMS Hood, it threatened Britain's supply chain across the Atlantic in WWll, Britain had to sink the ship (not a boat, boats are tiny vessels). The compass had the coordinates for Bismarcks grave, you see the ghost of the ship come out of the mist.
It was called "the Battle of the Atlantic".

what made the Bismarck famous was the fear she caused n the effort put into sinking her based on the treaties set after would ww1 n the position of Brittan when it was deployed. after ww1 the nation set limitations on thier military to prevent an arms-race, however in the 1930s some nation including Germany stated going going against them, the Bismarck and her sister ship the Tirpitz were among them, while counties like Brittan n France were still were, meaning Germany had the more powerful ships. fast-forward to may 1941 Germany managed to advance to the English channel leaving Brittan alone n relying on surplices from the u.s. witch they had to protect them selves from Germanys smaller ships n subs. not wanting these 2 ships out in the open to make thing more difficult they hunted the Bismarck down for over a week when she deployed just to protect the supply convoys. as for Tirpitz she was kept in Norway until November 1944 when the r.a.f. managed to bomb n sink her.

@INTJ Reacts: If you have to wonder why Sabaton wrote a song about the Nazi flagship KMS Bismarck, then I would highly recommend reacting to Final Solution or Prisoner #4859.
You can also react to 40:1, Uprising, or even Defense of Moscow, all songs about World War II events that should not be forgotten. Have you reacted to No Bullets Fly or Night Witches? Same thing.
As others have said, Sabaton takes no sides, and merely immortalizes them in song so those events, and the people involved, are not forgotten. If Sabaton has a motto, it is, "Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it."

The bismarck, despite being a German battleship during ww2, was both a marvel of engineering and a terror on the seas for the allies.
The ship had 8 main guns in 4 twin turrets, that could fire shells as big as tree trunks (15 inches), and weigh as much as a small car (800 kg), complete with split secondary (VERY dangerous) battery, very thick armor, a citadel (armor component protecting the vital areas of the ship) that was almost impossible to penetrate at close range, advanced radar AND rangefinders, meaning it had pretty deadly accuracy.
and yes, even tho it was the pride of the Kriegsmarine (german navy) in ww2, the Navy was the military branch least aligned with the nazi party, compared to the airforce and SS.

If you want to learn from history, then you have to be able to adopt a detached, dispassionate mindset while studying it.
Take Genghis Khan as an example. He did things that made Hitler look like an amateur. For example, on multiple occasions, he had the entire population of a city tortured to death (including women and children) simply because that city did not immediately surrender to him. He was without question an evil man. Yet he was also one of the most brilliant military commanders who ever lived, and he built the largest empire the world had ever seen.
There is no reason to like Genghis Khan, or to regard him with anything less than horror. Nevertheless, we can learn a lot by studying him -- but only if we can detach ourselves from disgust at his deeds. If you're mentally cheering for his opponents while you're reading his history, you aren't focused on learning from the text, and you probably won't learn much beyond a list of facts.

The second world war was horrible on a scale that is barely fathomable.
But if we don’t talk about it we risk forgetting about it and that is highly dangerous.
Sabaton doesn’t glorify either side. As it says in the end “war knows no nation.”. They’re basically talking about the soldiers that died and view it as a cost of human lives rather than focusing on who they fought for.
As for the Bismark it is an amazing feat to have built such a ship at that time. It’s design influenced battleships for many years after the war.
But no one is celebrating the nazis and what they did to humanity. Accept some weirdos who belive that the holocaust didn’t happen but those guys suck.

Sabaton does not take sides, it's history as it's written, the Nazi ship that was the Bismarck was quite literally made to be the leader of warships, 50 000 ton beast with huge weaponry, 2000 men needed to properly operate it, hunted down until it sunk, just becouse it was made by the Nazist forces, it doesen't mean it wasn't a beauty becouse it was exacly that.

Why is Sabaton making a song about Bismarck? Simply explained: it was the most commanded and the most combative ship in Europe, which was destroyed and sank after an attack on a British ship by the entire Home Fleet of the British Navy. And thus one of the largest and most important naval battles of the Second World War with 42 ships and one of the greatest victories of the Allies against the propaganda of Nazi Germany

Just FYI - the hunt for the Bismarck was BEFORE the USA became involved in WW2 - US was late again, as usual! History IS, it cannot and should not be changed or forgotten! My father was aboard HMAS Australia and chased KMS Scheer, so naval history is my thing. He also survived Leyte and Lingayen Gulf actions in The Philippines - which were not just USA against the Japanese - The two largest naval battles in history. If we don't learn from the history of human mistakes we are bound to repeat them.

The romanticising of Bismarck kinda annoys me, to be honest. It was a pirate ship filled with nazis on a mission to murder unarmed civilian seamen, in support of the most evil war machine in history. There must be two dozen ships from WWII that deserved to be memorialised in song more than Bismarck did.

Ships carrying contraband are not civilian ships and can be sunk. The sailors knew what they were signing up for and were getting paid a lot of money for it. Additionally, the Kriegsmarine was the least criminal navy during WWII. For this alone it deserves to be remembered
