Safe travels man! In 2011 I learned how to ride my first motorcycle by tagging along with my parents to sturgis. Their friend borrowed me a yami vstar the night before. That morning I fired it up and took off for a 6,300 mile road trip. An experience i’ll hold dear for the rest of my life.
Comfy seat and floorboards are a good idea. I did a 5,450 mile trip on my Low Rider with a thin Street Bob solo seat and forward controls. I can say this much, after riding all day the curb wherever I stopped to eat was more comfortable to sit on. And I wasn't too picky where slept for the night. Florida to Mexico City sounds awesome!
the 4400 mile trip sounds like a blast. did a 5300 mile trip on my RG from michigan to seattle on US-2 last year. love me some long distance trips on the bike.
Question: what ended up happening to the 70's Triumph chopper that subscriber from down the street gifted you? On back burner? Did you give it away? Or is a third-party putting the pieces together for you so you have a base to modify from? An update video or Instagram post would be great! Keep up the good work Josh!
Buckhorn handlebars are great handlebars they are very comfortable. I never had them on a bike I owner but rode a few Harley,s with them seems mostly FXR,s from the 80s. I just had an 83 I did a bunch of work on for my barber. The Evo is bullet proof I bet it runs longer than you think.
Forward controls suck for serious riding. Wind lift on your feet at high speed, asphalt snatching at your heels on tight corners, can't get your butt off the seat for unavoidable bumps. For big bikes and long rides floorboards are the bomb.
Sounds like a awesome trip with a great couple. Definitely some great memories will be made and good luck getting the scoot ready. Wish I had some spare parts to help ya out
I am glad to hear you plan to build the Triumph chopper and also make the FXR ready to that trip to Mexico, it will be awesome to do it with that bike.Cheers from France.
I do suggest inspecting the tappet rollers and not riding until failure, but that isn't really a rebuild. If your FXR has an INA cam bearing (inspect when you replace the feeble emissions cam like everyone else does) that's wise to replace too. Top ends frequently go well over 100K miles.
This sounds awesome! This is the reason I love your channel. It’s real, and it’s for people like me who work on what they can work on and leave the rest to the professionals. Keep up the great work! Can’t wait to meet you at FLMM!
Hey SS, u will be pleased to learn that your future self bought pretty much the ideal classic touring bike. Not sure if riding a Honda would be too easy. But taking the old Harley would be super cool.
Drill a hole in the starter side cover and start it with a screwdriver, Harley switches of that era are prone to fail. Been there’. Loving this project!
Buddy the “Most important “ thing to make sure is perfect is the belt .. please check it well ,, because it is a project to change and ya dont wanna be stuck with that broken on the road.. also if ya take the solenoid off and take it apart there is a copper washer in there you will see the one side is worn just flip the washer over and it will work again .. if ya cant find one cheap.. just a old trick i learned many years ago...
Man, that reminds me when I bought a Chinese copy of a Honda Rebel for 500 dollars. Then I drove it down the Hours Chi Minh Trail 600 miles from Hanoi to Do Nang. I had no serious issues on that piece of tin and plastic. Then I drove it all the way back - alone.
I’ve done over a 100k miles on my 2001fxdwg , top end is still stock and hasn’t been touched, though I did do the cam chest upgrade a while back, look after them and they won’t let you down😎
Ogio bags for $80 canadian pesos, i used them for a trip on my dyna and they were perfect. Also had tank bag i got at Aldi in scotland for 20 quid and served me well for a 5000km ride. If you want to go on a trip theres no need for $500+ luggage
Hey if you look up 1982-1986 Harley Davidson FXR Saddlebag Pannier Mount Kit on EBay you can get a pretty good look at the mounts and if you know anybody that can bend pipe you could probably build a mount to attach various types of bags. Some work but may be cheap compared to buying it. Just a thought, hopefully someone will come through for you on them. Awesome video as always.
Luvin it! Best wishes for the XR. Next time you're dealin with sticky screws, try a 3/8ths ratchet with a 1/4 inch adapter and a hex head driver. That will give you the torque to break loose a stubborn screw. LOL! Or use a wrench on a good quality screw driver. Lookin forward to the next episode.
Shadetree Surgeon Hell Yeah!!!! A trip with The Ornery One to Mexico. Is Jessica going as well? I’m looking forward to more things being done on the FXR. #StayWeird
The FXR bikes are fun to buzz around on sounds bad ass when you let off the throttle that would be one reason why I would roll with it be safe brother🤙
Man!! I’m from Mexico City, CDMX officially. I work in the nicest Ducati dealer of the city and maybe if the country. When you came maybe you should drop by, and whatever you need let me know 👍🏽

I have an 05 Sportster with 39mm forks. I replaced the stock poo poo squishy springs with a set of Progressive springs. Best $99.00 I have spent on my bike. For under 200 clams you can completely rebuild your 39mm forks. You will not regret it.
I like that you're testing the durability of an old clapped out Harley, I use your FXR videos to point out that not all old Harley's are unreliable pieces of junk. All you're doing really is routine maintenance on the thing until it just decides to die. I also understand you wanting to take the Crusty Glide over the Douchecati and the Rocket III, if it gets stolen in Mexico City you won't cry too much about it.
Awesome content as always. Just something I don't know if you tried but if you can't get the leverage with the screwdriver try a screwdriver head in the drill. Might be pointing out the obvious but it's escaped me a few times I should of used it on.
I welded some hokey brackets and used pelican cases for my 2012 Triumph Bonneville for road trips. They were cheap and looked ridiculous. They would be even more so on an FXR.
I have to say the whole just doing enough to keep somthing running is awesome :) the Magna is in dire need of a few things and I still did two mountain passes on it recently 😂😂😂 can't wait to see the trip and the Triumph build man they'll both be awesome. 4000+ miles on that bike will mean it'll basically be a part of the family then 😂😂 send me those tall boy forward controls :P
Drilling the bolts using the bike as a workbench? 🤣🤣 I was totally expecting to see that bit slip off and dig into the tank. Looks like ol’ Murphy must be too busy over here with me.
Sounds like that's going to be an awesome adventure if you spend the money and reseal the engine fix the few things I don't think that bikes that bad of shape maybe if you thought about buying some brackets and modifying and putting some FLH style hard bags on it?
Awesome I got lucky and found a custom Kenny Boyce pro street fxr that was built by a local shop that sold it in 2007 for $13,000 then I found it for sale for $10,000 less. Love watching your videos 2 thumbs up.
Hey Shadetree! Im a subscriber from Mexico city. I like too much the content of your videos and I have a Harley too, and even though its a Sportster, I love it. . to see you over here sometime. Keep it weird buddy... 🤙🏻
Hey Shadetree, Love the vid as you inpire me to do some stupid stuff with cheap bikes. BIG PS: Those saddle bags can work with a simple mod...probably. My Vulcan cruiser with shocks had a pair, enough to hold a slab of beer, with the frame having solid tube standoffs that bolted onto the guard keeping it stiff and it worked fine. I think some round bright steel drilled out to a clearance fit for 3/8" UNC or whatever is standard on the rear guard would do. Weld them onto the frame aligned to the mount holes in the guard, or make the holes in the guard with some supporting steel tacked inside.
Install a swing arm from an 02 to 08 touring bike. Beefy and makes a difference in handling. Cheap on ebay. You will have to change to a 1" rear axle wheel but its worth it.
You won't kill that EVO. It may even outlive you... (HAHAHAHA HELL YEAH!) my daily ride is also a 1986 FXR with around 80 k miles. I'm not worried at all about it. I've dreamed about S&S 124 " You're very welcome to Mexico City! And all the cool rides around it.
I have a windshield. If ya want it I'll mail it to you. I'm not shore what it came off of but if nothing else would be cool to put subscriber stickers on and set on the work bench or something
I have a set of sportster bag mounts and hardware off an 01 sportster if that would fit an FXR. Theres also a really nice used motorcycle parts store in my area if you need anything I can take a look.
25th! Good idea on those mags, love the spokes on my Heritage but you get a flat in Mehico..no bueno. At least you can poke a plug into it now. Good luck brother, should be a fun ride!
Shit dude, all I could think of was when was that screwdriver/drill gonna slip and create a whole new look to the seat below it. Trip sounds great. Only way I can do a 4400 mile (7081km) road trip would be to circumnavigate both islands of NZ one and a half times. LOL. When do you hope to do this?
Hubby says the FXR is not a junk bike, he said it is beautiful! Also hubby said make sure you take plenty of oil, the FXR changes it's own oil a little bit at a time...lol! I think you will find the Le Pera seat is extremely comfortable, we have that seat on Hubby's 2013 HD Super glide and your butt will feel craddled, trust me I did a video on that seat and it's the bomb!
I was watching your video about the "forgotten triumph" yesterday or the day before. I had the thought, "man, Shadetree should trade the FXR in toward the Thunderbird." Up until i saw this video. Now i just wannna ride to Mexico City with you. keep it weird
You should start selling some merch, I would love to have a Shadetree Surgeon shirt.
Yaaaasssssss
totally agree. I would rock a ST shirt in Tennessee! or some decals?
Or start selling Shadtree Special drinks since he's a bartender.
The mirror has recurring Forest Whitaker eye lmao I remembered that from a previous video.
FXR will fit in nicely in Mexico.

I feel you on that man!
the 4400 mile trip sounds like a blast. did a 5300 mile trip on my RG from michigan to seattle on US-2 last year. love me some long distance trips on the bike.
You're the man Josh, i love how you're down to earth homie! Keep it real!

Good to see some upgrades planned for one of my favorite bikes on the channel.
I am glad to hear you plan to build the Triumph chopper and also make the FXR ready to that trip to Mexico, it will be awesome to do it with that bike.Cheers from France.
I love how you use the old FXR as a workbench 😂😂😂 Love your videos man! Keep up the good work! 👍
Josh.....from head to toe, you really don’t give a rip what people think 🤔. I dig your style man. 👍🏼 👏 😎
Just having fun :)
If all else fails, sissy bar and a big back pack attached works. Plus you can lean back on it to make the trip a bit more comfortble
Met a guy a couple months ago riding an evo with 234,000 miles on it. No rebuilds. You're going to have to try a lot harder to blow that engine.
I do suggest inspecting the tappet rollers and not riding until failure, but that isn't really a rebuild. If your FXR has an INA cam bearing (inspect when you replace the feeble emissions cam like everyone else does) that's wise to replace too. Top ends frequently go well over 100K miles.

This is a cool relatable build
Hey SS, u will be pleased to learn that your future self bought pretty much the ideal classic touring bike. Not sure if riding a Honda would be too easy. But taking the old Harley would be super cool.
Your shirts that Lee Stuart is printing up are absolutely insane! I'd love to get my hands on one.
Sounds like an awesome trip, it will certainly be an adventure on a budget old bike.
This is going to be badass!! Thought the chopper trip was epic, wish you could have recorded the crazy night time back road excursion lol.
Drill a hole in the starter side cover and start it with a screwdriver, Harley switches of that era are prone to fail. Been there’.
Loving this project!
HELL YEAH!
I never understood why people spent so much time on RUclips... and then I found you. Awesome content dude
You may be able to space out the mounting hardware for those bags to clear the shocks. It will look odd, but I'm sure it could be done.
On my old fxr we put a set of strut hangers and some throw over bags.

@@shadetreesurgeon No worries man, just letting you know we all appreciate what you do.

Im genuinely excited about all your upcoming projects man!! so cool how the community can come together to help you out!
Dude I can’t wait for more on this FXR trip!

Sounds like a helluva fun trip man, good luck and with working on the bike!
Keep us updated, when you ride through Texas, I will try to stumble across your path!
Finally glad to hear you plan on building the triumph!
The FXR bikes are fun to buzz around on sounds bad ass when you let off the throttle that would be one reason why I would roll with it be safe brother🤙
The white FXR in the picture looks exactly like my buddy's '90 FXRT.
That's nice. I want the same fairing for my Sporty. I might just rock it white, too, even though my bike isn't.
BAGS!!!! i got a softail that those would look wild on send em
One man's junk is another man's treasure. You do you bro.
I wouldn't mind trying to get those bags put on my Yamaha V star. Figure that'll make a few HD riders mad.... thanks for the video's shade tree
Man!! I’m from Mexico City, CDMX officially. I work in the nicest Ducati dealer of the city and maybe if the country. When you came maybe you should drop by, and whatever you need let me know 👍🏽
Road trip to Mexico with the Ornery One you can't go wrong!!
There is a lot to be said for beater bikes. Mine is a 2000 Sportster. Love riding that bike. Bare minimum to keep it going.
Also you don’t need FXR specific luggage. Those softail bags can be made to work. You need some steel brake line
Have fun finding a windshield. If you find a place to get one let me know. I need one for mine
Mounted St bags on Dyna. Looked great... I built the inter metal brackets up with no bag mounts. Hugged the bike. carried tools oil etc. Justa sayin'
Reserve the la pera seat if you don't use it,
good luck , seen some EVO's go 150k no problem, just grease wheel bearings
o I finally got the paperwork for the work done on the engine for my 92 fxrs

Them are (big Bertha bags, Googlethem ) they've been around for ever !! Keep doing what your doing
The trip to Mexico City sounds great! Cant wait to see the fxr getting a lil love
Blow it up!! I wanna see a new build series on this!!!
Dude you should hit up Viking bags, they make lockable hardbags for bikes with cutouts for external suspension.
I got a thorough laugh from watching that mirror vibrate to where ever tf it wants 😂😂😂
Awesome content as always. Just something I don't know if you tried but if you can't get the leverage with the screwdriver try a screwdriver head in the drill. Might be pointing out the obvious but it's escaped me a few times I should of used it on.
I am becoming addicted to your videos lol. I really dislike the forward controls on my Lowrider. Going back with mids.
In that price range for saddlebags I would advise checking out Fox Creek leather
I welded some hokey brackets and used pelican cases for my 2012 Triumph Bonneville for road trips. They were cheap and looked ridiculous. They would be even more so on an FXR.
I think you can get a knurled screw to make taking the seat off easier.

I want those bags! Those are "Heritage" bags, but they're for a 4-speed Shovelhead. They go just behind the shocks. I can trade a small tourpac.
