Steps for How to Build a Custom Fireplace Mantel:
1. Spread a canvas drop cloth onto the floor in front of the fireplace.
2. Cut three poplar boards to size to form the vertical pilasters and horizontal frieze of the fireplace mantel.
3. Join the boards together with glue and pocket screws.
4. Rout a rabbet into the back edges of the mantel so that it will overlap the wall tiles that surround the fireplace.
5. Cut a filler strip to fit behind each side of the mantel.
6. Glue and nail the filler strips to the back of the mantel.
7. Rip a narrow strip of poplar to trim out the top of each pilaster.
8. Glue and nail the trim to the mantel.
9. Use the circular saw to rip a poplar board to fit along the top of the mantel. This board will support the crown molding and mantel shelf.
10. Cut a poplar nailer strip and narrow trim piece to fit the length of the mantel, then fasten them to the mantel with glue and pocket screws.
11. Next, bevel-rip a 1x5 board to width to form the crown molding.
12. Cut a 45-degree miter into each end of the 1x5 crown.
13. Miter-cut a short return piece of 1x5 poplar to fit at each end of the crown.
14. Glue and nail the return pieces to the crown.
15. Glue and nail the crown to the nailer installed on the mantel.
16. Stand the mantel against the fireplace wall and secure it to the wall studs with 3-inch screws.
17. Cut a poplar shelf to fit across the top of the mantel, then nail the shelf to the nailer strip. Also nail at an angle up through the crown molding and into the underside of the mantel shelf.
18. Fill the nail and screw holes with wood putty. Allow the putty to dry overnight, then sand lightly with 120-grit sandpaper.
19. Finish by priming and painting the mantel.

Tommy is the man. He makes everything look easy
Tom Silva is the Chuck Norris of old homes.
This guy knows everything about building right!
the man's a genius
Hottest homeowner yet 👍
Also cool carpentry or whatever
Tattoos on her back and everything!
Ther was carpentry??😂
@Shukin Andjivin I get the feeling these men haven't got laid in a very loooooooooooong time. They sound desperate and easily impressed.
I could've done this project... But I'd need 5xs as much wood due to the upside down miter saw mistakes I would've made and countless bad measuring on my part.
Dont feel bad i would have probably cut my hand off with such a hot homeowner standing next to me
Wish I had someone like Tommy around back in my younger years..his knowledgeable experience, and temperament would've help tremendously....when I wanted to get in the trade, I dealt with screwballs who
would treat you like garbage...never really teaching anything really....never fulfilled what I really wanted to
set as a career. Been watching TOH since the beginning
I wish they would show more closeups of the finished job at the end
He has a whole bunch of experience..Great finish carpenter
I’m a Carpenter and still learning from genius Tommy
So that is how good a master carpenter is.
enjoyed your displayed craftsmanship!!
It's easy to spot someone who've done a lot of carpentry. Just the quick instinctive way he marked which side of the mark should be cut is something you can only learn by doing.
I have built several mantels. Nice he carried the theme from the windows...I appreciate such things. :)
He makes me realize just how much I don't know.
First step to Learning
Neve stop learning
professional , detailed carpenter, amazing skills .
you know when Tommy is explaining the cuts & the process many of these people just nod their head but are lost with what he's talking about. I know I am. I often re-watch a few times to understand what he's explaining.
Having the right tools for the right job everything is easy.. Tom is the man..
I bet when this footage made it's way to post, very small adjustments were made (brightness, color correction) All this talent is as good as it gets, filmed straight across. Well done Tommy.
this Sir it’s in another level of contractors!!👍💪
By far my favorite project on the show
Why do your own carpentry when you can watch Tommy fix other people’s houses up on RUclips all day long. Great results.
Tom your awesome carpenter!
The Man knows his stuff and is good at his JOB
Nossa Parabéns ficou Lindo Mesmo Ok ?
Great job Tommy 🌟
Fantastic work Tommy and great job by the homeowner too!
As corny as cheesy as it might sound, this shows gives me a sense of calmness and peace .
😎
Nice job Tommy!
Beautiful job 🔨👏👏
Tommy KNOWS carpentry !!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME job, and it will finish up nicely, being made of Poplar :) :) :)
Excellent work
beautiful peice of art
Tommy the Master dude!!..
🇺🇸🇺🇸😎👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
awesome, great job!
Tom Silva - your like the new Bob Ross. Keep it up good sir.
how the hell did you work that out? What's next, Steve Vai is the Bob Ross of guitar playing?
You,mean Bob Vila? But he never really did any actual work, carpentry or otherwise so that wouldn’t make sense. Hmm. Odd comment.
I forgot the internet.... yeah they guy youre talking about is who I meant.
No stress, always easy as pie and uses plenty of learned tricks of the trade, Tom is a master if there ever was one ! I could never work and explain like that to a customer lol ! What would tom say if he misses with a brad lol oops ! Tom is the best
Quê lindo 😍😍😍
She seemed genuinely excited!
Love your videos :)
Gives a whole new meaning to "passing the mantle", 😆
Nice work
IS amazing Sir👍
Tommy rocks! A real life macgyver.
Step by step instructions are awesome!
Tom knows his stuff.
Thanks so much for sharing. It is a beautiful mental. I wish i had the ability to build one.
Nice nice.
Looks a whole lot better than when they started.
Wow
I was thinking about making a taper jig for my table saw to cut some filler pieces for cabinets next to un-square (un-plumb) walls, but a straight edge and circular saw will work just fine. Thanks for the tip. 4:50 Also looking to build a mantel which will hide wiring so I will obviously have to modify this design. But a great starting point.
Scribe and then freehand it on a table saw.
Guy is such a badass
How to Chang tail around fair Place?
Looks good, I would have scribed the top cap to the wall though.
Why?
yes
I shat myself at 0:50 with that thin rip on a jobsite table saw.
Hey Tommy you look like John bulton that's amazing
He makes me realise just how many expensive tools I need to make a fire surround. I think I'll buy one instead. Looking great though.
Most of their tools just make the job easier since they're doing it every day. You can easily build this with just a tablesaw
That looks so good but was also so simple
Well at least he makes it look easy even though it's probably not
im with Thomas lol
It is, Ive made much more ornate Mantel surrounds. But its just a show.
A 2year old could do it...
Somebody please make a compilation video of every time someone replies, “Sounds good” to what Silva is about to do.
Man that sounds good
Or "Let's get it done!"
and ok Lol
Or when Tom says “What I like to do...”
You just want a HOT! home owner to say sounds good to you!!!
Wonder if it was ever sanded and painted. Thinking we need an update on this one.
TOH comes back to visit … "Hey you didn't sand or paint yet!!" "No, I like the natural look"
I truly can not follow Tommy with all the offsets, dados, etc but I always love the finished product.
Now, that is done.
Let's build us a REAL fireplace! 😁
I wasn't a helper like that! haha 😀
Gets a free mantle for laying glue on one board. Sign me up.
Tommy is beautiful.
He thinks youre cute too.
This ruclips.net/user/postUgkxATHBlMJwipGgVWseuAFKvDQ_5R4_lywo unit was an easy install and turned out amazing. The dimensions were exact! I took a chance and built the wall prior to receiving the unit which arrived sooner than expected and it fit right in the space I constructed. The heat output is perfect for the space we needed and made the room exactly how we envisioned it to turn out. I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Thank you for the awesome product just in time for the holidays.
I still prefer by to be the helper.
Ok Alright Hum Hum perfect they all say these words. Another nice bird .
Also, this video seems like he was doing a job for his daughter or a close family friend. 😁
What kind of wood do you use for the top of the mantel? Once I painted mine, it started to warp.
Looks like he used poplar.
Bamboo works best, or bubinga.
You did something wrong then.
That nail gun is boss
Its a brad nailer pal
@@tombryan1 And a jumbojet is also a 747 asshat
do you guys every come to San Francisco California?
Yes, the white areas.
hi love your series, i'd like to know what brand of cordless nail gun you are using .thanks.
Clearly a Bostitch :-)
Norm is very good at building things.
Hey where’s your Dewalt nailers
Tom silvia is the gandalf of carpenters.
Hes the little pigmy that could.
And he still has all his fingers!!
Robertson head screws in the US? how'd those get past customs :P
Those are from the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig he used
I noticed that as well!
I lived in canada for a few years I love robbie heads ha
👍👍👍👍👍
I clicked because of the pretty lady. #noshame
Nelson Brum same
Me too
TELE6220 Heaven forbid a person found a woman attractive.
Tommy always seems to get these lonely single hotties, but not for 1 minute do I think she's interested in what screws he's using
@@elephantgrass631 The arrested development males feel the need to mention it, as though the public gives a rat's hiney.
😁😍
By the Code. Do you know the distance you must have, Under the shelve to the top of the stove to be safe .
He has forgotten more about carpentry than I actually have knowledge of. Lol
Came here just to read the comments.
lay the wood and wait till the glue ooses out,, followed by a good nailing
lmfao!!!
you forgot to MAAHK it first
Patrick Wagz really haaaad.
what did she say? ( 0:46) roflmao
no thats what he said . after he says that . she mumbles something..
Keith White the client wanted to say alright but changed her mind and finished with oh nice, it ended up being "all rice!"
mmm....rice
Pwapla!
Why can't I find a helper like that?
You are not handsome?
@@tombryan1 Ha ha! I hope no less than Tommy!
He was supposed to make the reveal softer. Instead he made it deeper because he softened it on the wrong side.
Thank you. I just was watching and jammed on the brakes. I'd seen this video before and I just noticed it. Everyone else is zombied out. I'm surprised that Tommy actually made a mistake. I was starting to think he was Clark Kent.
I think he did it right. The original reveal was 1/4" (5/4 vs 4/4 lumber). He then used shims that reduced the 1/4 to about an 1/8. When he is done, the reveal is 1/8" not the original 1/4. It was a bit confusing flipping the board, but in effect he centred the board on the pilaster. Tommy is a master.
Video very good music to loud.
Welp, I guess I'm not making a fireplace mantel anytime soon
10:08 she loved stroking the wood
2:55 that’s what she said
So how would I fasten a mantle made out of Jello?
Yowza
Vicki
She's a babe 😍
