Having same issues with my 07 xc70, with the cover off the timing and how you showed the exhaust VVT gear was wiggly, grab it with both hands and see it it moves in and out, not up and down. If up and down then cam bearings are gone and that would be rare, if it moves in and out, its time for a new one, replacing my as we speak. Hopefully it helps and you get it back running such great cars. ✌🏼💚🙏🏻

o ring in the oil pan on the oil feed galley to the solenoid is clogged or pinched.
Vida can run a cycle test to show cvvt solenoid reaction time.
In vida, go to the vvt solenoid, it will show a picture of the solenoid, click on the picture to launch the test menu.
When using vida you should keep a charger on the battery, it activates all the modules and gobbles the battery power in short order. You need a very healthy fully charged battery to run the volvo 5 cyl, it doesn't like low volts, the computer won't play.
The engine will run but set a CEL if off 2 teeth,.
