Volvo XC70 New Brake Rotors, Ceramic Brake Pads, Brake Hoses, and Parking Brake Shoes
After posting the Engine Mounts XC70 video a couple months ago, the comments blew-up about the cracked front brake hose lines to the calipers - obvious cracking and possible mild weeping.
Well, as of now, the XC70 has new brake components including upgraded Akebono Ceramic brake pads to virtually eliminate the dreaded Volvo OEM brake dust on those pretty front wheels.
Follow along through my efforts comleting my first ever solo brake job - including Parking Brake Shoes - at all four corners for our 2007 Volvo XC70. Be sure to see just how much $$$ I saved compared to the Firestone estimate back in October 2024!

      It finally came out kind of by luck as I loosened the first cam bolts. Putting it back together, I had to remove the 1/2 circle insert on the block edge. I recommend just removing the 1/2 circle insert to gain direct access into the bolt without listening the cam bolts. :) Jamie

    Glad you'll be staying with us for longer. I had the exact same issue with the drum brake shoes delaminating. Couldn't reverse out of the parking lot one day and couldn't figure out why. The shoes had wedge themselves against the rotor. I read online that this is a somewhat common issue, and super dangerous cause it could lockup your wheels if it delaminates while you are driving. Good thing you found it out as the car was coming apart..

    Well done, Jamie! I have a vibration that I can't pin down. I have changed the plugs, coils, wires to the coils, cleaned the TB, etc. and it may be pointing to the two mounts I haven't changed. The two fluid filled round ones. They're on my list of to-do. I bought a Vida Dice but haven't got it working yet to do a deep scan for other issues...always fun working on the Volvos! Take care! I used Moog strut links and no problem so far. Plus, they have grease nipples!

    • @ethandonivan5175
      @ethandonivan5175 13 дней назад

      Pretty much same here. I’ve done all oem mounts besides the two hydraulic ones, it just vibrates more at idle vs the 14 other Volvos including or the same ones lol.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects 13 дней назад

      @@ethandonivan5175 I have half a mind to order all five mounts and change them again using a different brand. I have a really bad vibration on cold start that lasts at idle and diminishes as I increase engine revs. It idles at 750, doesn't throw a single code, and drives smooth on the highway. So annoying to try to pin this down!

    • @ethandonivan5175
      @ethandonivan5175 13 дней назад

      @ That is frustrating to hear, mine runs perfect too, everything else is up to snuff. I’ve had others with poly mounts and every other combo of parts and none have bin this bad at idle besides fresh poly mounts and solid crossbeam mounts on a xc90 2.5t. I have poly inserts in my subframe bushings but otherwise oem mounts, thoes didn’t change the vibration. We picked up another 2.5 xc90 the other day that had zero top mount or bottom left, fairly low miles otherwise clean, replaced with oem mounts and it growls bad under load and has a idle vibration now. I can only assume it took out the hydros and the front mount.

    • @ethandonivan5175
      @ethandonivan5175 13 дней назад

      @ forgot to mention, nothing in Vida, it’s also only at idle, my dash and glovebox rattle on cold starts as it’s settling. Ac makes it a tad bit worse but it’s an original compressor with 240k on it & it lived in 110° plus summers. It seems to be louder under load vs all the others I’ve owned, it’s been this way for the last 30k, got got progressively louder to this point from 208-215k. I drive a lot this was all within the last 6 ish months.

    Jamie, anywhere you remove the original oticker style hose clamps, replace them with the original style clamps. As you know by now, there are many of them including the PCV system. They will not come loose and won't dig into the hose. You will need to buy 2 tools for the pinching. One for straight shots and the other for side pinching. FCP has all of this but Amazon has what you need for quite a bit less $$. And yes, the Amazon clamps are stainless steel. I am sure you remember the hose on top of the cylinder head when you replaced the PCV. That worm clamp can eventually dig into the wires for the coil that interferes with it. Volvo engineers decided to use this style clamp for good reason.

    • @jamiecars
      @jamiecars 2 месяца назад

      Thank you. Volvo Brett also recommends the Odicker clamps. I will look into those tools. That PCV hose worm clamp is a PIA - nearly impossible to find an alignment to avoid wiring and the lump in the cam cover. :)

    did you consider using riv-nuts in the places where the rivets were? Even though I hate riv-nuts with a passion, this looks like the best spot for them to be used. I know they come in different sizes. Looks like the smallest would require a 6mm hole and it uses a M4 thread pitch. I could be wrong, but definitely the right place for a riv-nut...

    This wasn't boring at all. In fact, I found this interesting. You have the patience of a saint! I am in question of the CEM itself. In regard to the massive number of wires, my guess is that there are so many communications simultaneously going on including all the safety built in features, playing a role in this. Welcome to the world of Canbus! So, Jamie, what is the next surgery? In my opinion, I think a thorough inspection of the CEM is going in the right direction. I hope that isn't the gremlin but if it is the problem, at least you are familiar with Xemodex. Since you are an expert at door card removal, I have 2 tips! Replace the blue plastic slider shoes in the window tracks and lubricate the vertical window guides with Krytox PTFE GPL206. This lube will make your windows slide up and down like new. And it lasts very long without attracting any contaminates. Looking forward to the next episode of Jamie Cars!

    To make your struggle easier with the banjo bolt and the 10mm lower IM bolt, remove the alternator. It's easy to remove when the fan assembly is out. That also makes an opportunity to replace the external voltage regulator on the alternator. Also, when all that stuff is out of your way, put in a new oil pressure sensor. They all leak at some point.

    Nice video. For streaming i was buying Blue Music unit,. It's a CD emulator and it works fine. You don't need to use the cassette player. ;)

    If the P0171 would come back - there is only one safe way to find the air leak: smoke/vapour detection. Ask an independent service near you if they have a machine that can blow "fog" (oil vapour) into the sealed air intake system. Sometimes it takes more than 30 minutes until it comes somewhere near the fuel tank or under the car or hidden near the firewall out of a micro-crack. That's where the engine is sucking un-metered air, that's causing the +15% fuel trim, that trips the engine lean code.

    I did the do88 intercooler and AC condenser. My original condenser just had too many bent fins. I live in Las Vegas where ambient temps are 100+. With the AC on and summer heat, the intake temps were 130-150F so no performance upgrade was felt since it was still getting cooked.

    For Christ's sake, if you're going to remove or tighten either a power steering line or brake lines, please use a flare nut wrench. Horrible Freight has either the Pittsburgh or Quinn 5-piece set. Me personally, I used a Snap-on long T40 TORX bit socket. Part #FTXL40E. It's about $45.00 though.

    No abuse from me, just appreciation for sharing your experiences as you keep your Previa on the road. I'm up above 340,000 mi on my naturally-aspirated Previa, but haven't done my heater hoses yet. When I do, I will keep your experiences in mind. Thank you!

      Honestly - heater hoses are a major issue to re-craft. The 2 major bends from the heater core mounts are crimping from normal use - not sure they will survive cold weather...I would wait until they leak badly before touching them as there are no replacements for SC Previa.

    One thing Intercooler will do is basically eliminate heat soak even on the hottest days. May improve the performance slightly. I did the same upgrade on my P3 S60T6 and on hot days it stopped losing power completely as well as improved spool up. Aircon isn't as efficient though, since it's now completely covered by the new big IC. Aluminium radiator will do the job well. If you didn't clean THAT condenser I'd be yelling at the screen lol

    Previas are great. My silver 1991 Previa is still on the road at 343,000 mi. Good for you that yours is still on its original engine and transmission. I had to put a "new" engine in mine around 320,000 mi and am just about to put in a "new" transmission in. Keep up the good work and have fun!

    I'm doing this job on my 2006 V70. OEM here too. Now I'm going to be extra careful replacing those o-rings. What I don't get is that the oem o-rings I bought come in a set of 2 for each injector. Where does the other one go? Nice to see it all apart like you have it here. Funny that we have to cut a notch out of the new gasket! Also nice to see the back of the engine opened up. I'm doing all the cam seals so I'll be in there soon. Watching other videos, yeah that banjo bolt looks to be a bi*ch, but seeing it here all open really helps me frame what's going on. Thanks for sharing all this. Nice job.

      The other o-ring goes on the bottom of the injector that sits in the ports in the fuel rail.

    I’m glad to see this job is doable for the average Joe. I replaced the neglected 200k engine in my Previa with a low miles JDM engine years ago. Prior owner thought running straight water in the cooling system was a good idea 🤦‍♂️

    On a side note. Finding cracked/worn seals is to be expected at high mileage. You can replace them as you go along since most will still operate. But unfortunately when you move a part with worn seals/rings, they will fall apart when removing. That's universal in all cars.

    Thank you for the video and your want to create this content. I found it very helpful as I'm about to tackle the breather system in my S60R. It's a love and passion. But it's also fun to self diagnose. I'm looking forward to updating my breather system. Also thanks for bringing up the spacer for the throttle body.

      No. Not all the time - just curious watching fuel trims while it was throwing P0171 lean condition recently. Starting to feel I fixed it this time...
