After the hilarious shock of her singing sinks in, Meryl Streep's Florence Foster Jenkins might easily turn into a crashing bore, as anyone so self-unaware is bound to become. Yet the actress and her director Stephen Frears engage our sympathy for the character they create and bring us completely in on the joke as the story unfolds. Near the end of the film when New York Post columnist Earl Wilson walks out on her Carnegie Hall performance and subsequently publishes the truth about Jenkins' voice in a scathing review, HE becomes the tone-deaf barbarian rushing in, destroying what he cannot understand, spoiling the fun. It is a tribute to the mastery of both Streep and Frears that we are on Madam Florence's side until the end, instead of savoring her comeuppance, which we knew was inevitable.
