Adding Carplay/Android Auto + Wireless Charging to our E92 M3 - Induktiv + Mr12Volt Install + Review

- We absolutely adore our E92 M3, with it still putting a smile on our face every time we drive it. However the tech is still very much 15+ years old, and being used to more modern cars such as the G series BMWs mean we get used to certain creature comforts!
To fix this we add a Mr12Volt MMI box that utilises the existing iDrive screen and controller but adds a ton of features including full wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In addition to this we add the Induktiv wireless charger, this is an OEM+ piece which can fast charge your phone without overheating like many other systems suffer with.
This combo means its seamless to have your phone connected, for music/podcasts, calls and navigation all whilst charging your phone without having to plug in.

This is a fantastic product, which I thoroughly recommend! Evolve fitted it to my e92 M3 on Monday 12th February. I had a android auto unit that had been added by a previous owner. It was horrendous and didn't work! This meant that it took longer to fit. They also managed to make sure the rear camera worked! As well as this they showed me some of their cars like the e90 M3 CRT. Amazing! 👌

I've got an Integrated Automotive system in my E90 LCI M3, which is also very good. To switch between it and idrive you press and hold the menu button for 3secs. It defaults to idrive unless it detects your phone (which is always!), in which case it defaults to the Integrated Automotive system.

is there something similar with like a screen that can fit in an m3/135i that doesn't have the idrive with the screen
I have the one older model of mr12volt, the blue box with equaliser. Seems like they changed to a harness splitter without having to split the idrive controller connector.
Im wondering if they fixed the audio feedback issue when calling with android auto. Basically, if you call someone with android auto, the reciever hears their voice echo. Doesnt happen with carplay. Also, only happens if you dont connect to the cars native bluetooth as if you do, the call routes to the idrive rather than through the mr12volt.
Also does the oem mic splitter give clear audio? I had issues with the older provided mic.
Is there a non OEM product for a M2C available from evolve?

Great vid as always. Did you guys need to do any coding like enabling the CD changer or did you just need to use the loop and the CIC will pick it up? I have a 2010 E90 M3 with the same setup (no cd changer), but can't get a straight answer from anyone.
You must code the CD changer option if your car does not already have one.

Interested to know how the wireless charger gets on. I’ve found wireless charging to generally be disappointingly bad even in modern cars
We’ve extensively tested this on 3 hour journeys whilst using wireless carplay, not only was it adding around 20% battery per hour but also not making the phone super hot. Really impressed.

Haven’t tested it but I think the main CD drive yes, but if you had a CD changer that gets disconnected/replaced.

It is yes, the phone showed is a 14 Pro Max which is the same size as your 15 Pro Max

Say I'm using CarPlay on my '08 E92 M3 (CCC) and playing music through Pandora, will the "Next" button on the steering wheel change the song?

I have the mr12volt in my e92 but did not connect any loop in the boot as shown in your vid, what was that loop for??
Possibly you have an earlier model that doesn’t use the MOST bus? It’s to enable the CD changer loop that it uses.
Mines a 59 plate CIC car with no cd changer. When I installed the system via most, i thought it needed coding but it just seemed to work instantly, so I left the loop in the box. Strange!

We didn’t? What was installed in the rear was a loop for the CD changer
Do you guys have any issues with the induktiv unit? I've had it installed in my car and find it very finicky. My phone doesn't quite sit right in the tray (iPhone 15 pro), if it's even the slightest bit off center it won't charge, and I often get a heat warning on my phone. It also just doesn't charge my phone very often - it'll only up it by 1 or 2 percent throughout the course of a drive. Have you guys ever considered making a MagSafe compatible version of this solution?
We haven’t had any issues no, it works really well in our experience! Easily charging the phone without getting too hot even when using wireless CarPlay/Android auto.
What I would say is that all the phones we have tried are bigger than yours and are held in place by being pretty much the size of the tray, which means they’re super secure.
Unsure if Induktiv plan to update this charger to be MagSafe like the F3/8x charger, but in my experience it makes no difference between the two other than the onscreen animation of MagSafe.
Is this compatible with CCC(‘08 e9X)?
There is a CCC variant, the biggest difference will be the iDrive screen resolution is lower so it won’t look quite as crisp.

Customers can add one if they wish, we tested a few but they did not meet our expectations of quality and reliability so chose not to offer them.
Gotcha, I’m currently in the middle of the install on 2 of my e92 M3’s . Just ordered the ones Gordon recommended, we’ll see how it goes.

Mr12Volt will not work on BMW F25 X3 with CIC although they list in on their website. Support of Mr12Volt is really bad and will not help.
Don’t most wireless chargers in cars just overheat your phone? Especially ones on BMWs.

is there a wireless charger that incorporates an OEM style cover over the charging tray?
The tray that has the lid is smaller than the one without so it wouldn’t fit a larger phone in.

They don’t make one with a lid because of the size restriction.

We don’t have anything that offers a different screen. We have the same system for the F series NBT cars.

Mr12Volt have an instructional video, this isn’t a DIY tutorial, just showing what’s involved.
Check out ‘Stone Automotive’ on YT - he has just posted a DIY video to install one of these to an E92 M3.
Wireless charging is a myth. Heats ul phone, slow, bad for phone battery, temperamental, you need to move the phone around till it starts to charge . Give me a cable any day of the week
Having used this pretty extensively for 3-4 hour journeys whilst using wireless CarPlay I can confirm it works really well, adding about 20% battery an hour on an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Is it slower and generate more heat than a cable? 100%, that’s just physics. But the convenience is great and the Induktiv works so much better than the G8X BMW OEM systems!

E92 m3 and e60 m5 are not good cars to daily. Too old. Too fragile. Engines are too close to been race engines. Tolerances too tight and not an engine you want to be running around daily. That's from someone who owns one
Did it for 4yrs and was a blast. Expensive on gas and tires but other than that it’s a solid way to burn some post work stress.
If you can afford the fuel bill and warm it up correctly they make just as good of an everyday car now as they did when new.
However while these upgrades would be great day to day, we did them for weekend enjoyment. Because it’s incredibly annoying to either have a phone mount or rely on outdated slow maps when out enjoying the car. Roadtrips etc this would be a must have for us.

I had mine since new (2011). Kept up with maintenance, fixed potential weaknesses when I crossed 110,000 miles. I’m now at 130,000 miles with at least 10,000 track miles. No problems. My daily too.
Wonder what you would say about me dailying an even older E46 M3 😅. At 180k miles and drives amazingly
