Great walk with superb views of the Wye valley. What a pity they closed the line. Were it still open, I'm sure it would have attracted many tourists and of course, railway buffs. Symond's Yat is magnificent, but not easy to reach by public transport. When I visited some 40 years ago, I left the bus and walked from Goodrich and over Huntsham Bridge. The View from the rock made the walk in baking heat, all worthwhile.

That must have been quite an experience Malcolm. Given just how difficult it is to reach Symonds Yat even today by car (the roads, and that bridge you mention, Huntsham, are all narrow and twisty) and the high number of tourists, I would thought that this would have survived - it would have made an event in itself travelling behind a steam engine running alongside the River Wye. We have chucked so much good stuff away, alas. Great memories! Thank you, Paul.

      Thank you !
Yes, the Wye Valley is beautiful and it is such a pleasure to be able to walk along so much of this old railway line.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂👍
      Cheers,
      Paul

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
I've been looking forward to this video since you mentioned it some weeks ago. My Mum Ruth(nee Loveridge) was born and brought up in Symonds Yat in a house called Ivy Bank. As kids, my sister and I with our parents spent Easter holidays there from the mid50s to the mid 60s. I can vaguely remember the railway but it wasn't working.
A fantastic walk from Yat Rock. The ferry was very exciting - the ferryman pulled you across on a rope! The Wye Rapids Hotel was there as was the hotel that now appears to be in ruins.
Superb memories for which I thank you. Beautiful River Wye valley - captured by you in a very professional way. Lovely commentary and splendid still photographs.
See you again soon. Stay safe please

Oh, wow! That's such an amazing comment Michael! Thank you! So much of interest in your words there. Must have been a very different place in the 1950s. Such a shame that that hotel is in such a state now - hope that they can restore it to its former glory. I didn't know that your mum was born in Symonds Yat! Wow! Amazing place to grow up in. Yes, I have never been on the rope ferry - I think that I should try it some time. Thank you so much for your kind words. Take care, Paul.

Thank you Colin. Yes, I didn't realise that that bridge had been there since the 1950s (though it has been restored a few time in between). Looks a lovely place to stay for a holiday. Thanks for watching and commenting, take care, Paul.

Yes, Biblins Bridge is such fun Louise! It has been there since 1957, but restored a couple of times after flood damage. Thanks for a lovely comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care, Paul.

Hi Paul, bit of a coincidence but I was just looking a Monmouth on Google maps, Simon the hairy golfer has just been awarded life time membership at the West Monmouth golf course in recognition of the videos that he did there, so I was looking to see where it was and then up popped your video!!
Those bridges are quite something, of course we have seen them before in Ron's recent video but you really did get some good photos of them both together👏👏
The good thing about those railway walks is that they are generally flat!! I hope the car park was still open when you got back!!
    Great video well done!!
    Good luck from Spain!!

Yes, the car park was open, just! I always need all of the available light at this time of year, because filming obviously takes time, after all the retakes. I think it opens later, later in the year. Ah, I didn't know that about the Hairy Golfer! Congratualtions to him! I did play golf (well, crazy golf!) once, an awful experience. Because of my condition, I have terrible fine muscle control, and bad hand/eye co-ordination, so golf is a no no for me. Walking is just fine though! I had completely forgotten about Ron's visit there (6 months ago?) - the route just sprung out at me from the book that my daughter got for me for Christmas. I hope to cover more walks that are in it, that are in my area. Surprisingly, I don't know that area very well, and I have never done this walk before. Thanks for a great comment David! Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul, this really is getting spooky, I've just finished editing a film on part of this railway! I concentrated on the Wye railway crossing and tunnel just below Lydbrook. Your film will save me a lot of leg work looking for another location. I can no longer do the long walks so I tend to concentrate on a small section. I'll pack extra sandwiches in case I bump into you as we seem to both think alike. Take care. Ron

Oh my gosh - that is very coincidental! Yes, I was planning to do the Welsh Bicknor to Kerne Bridge section at some point. I only did this section because of the book that I had for Christmas. It is a lovely walk. Yes, I am sure we will bump into each other soon! Enjoy your travels and filming Ron. Take care, Paul 👍

Most Interesting and Beautiful. The time just flew by. I am left wondering what is a Yat...

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  Год назад +2

Ah, good question! Perhaps I should have said in the video. My apologises! Yes, 'Yat' is Old English for Gate, in the sense, meaning the gateway to the gorge or Wye Valley. Glad you enjoyed it! Take care, Paul.

Photo I took in the 1960's from Yat Rock which I have put on your Facebook Page, the next time a few years later the trees had grown up so obscuring the view, so looks like it's visible again.

Thank you Ted! I'll have a look for that photo. Yes, they have cleared some of the branches and trees that were obscuring that famous view from The Rock. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. God Bless, Paul.

What a brilliant walk, so glad it was mostly good underfoot, that probably helped you keep your speed up, so you could get back to the car park. I'm not too sure about the bouncing, swaying bridge, but we were spoilt with the many bridges today. Thank you.
