Hi! Next Monday i am hopefully finally making the week in the life of a TA Video/Vlog live... if you watch it, please feel free let me know how i can make it better lol for when i try the day on the life as a phd! 💙
@@BrisaMarie will do! Currently I’m a bit nervous as I have been invited to a preview event at the University of Michigan and to a virtual admissions fair at UC Berkeley. Two schools that are far more prestigious than I expected to take an interest in me. How do I best represent myself without coming off stressed or desperate?
hi! my best advice is dont be desparate and (its actually okay to be a little nervous/stressed). Listen, I KNOW its hard to believe but you are literally smart enough for these institutions. You meet their qualifications or they wouldn't be interested in you. So theres no need to be desparate because you will eventually be where you are meant to be. (even if there are rejections along the way) what is important to remember is that grad schools are NOT doing you a favor. They are learning with you. They are growing with you. Universities need grad students just as much as grad students need universities. Grad students teach, they push academia forward, and lets not forget they pay their bills with tuition money. So try to remind yourself that you do belong and that you might be far more prestigious than you give yourself credit! Cast a wide net, so you can have options. And don't get too hung up on names either, because a school that is super prestigious may not be a good fit based on your standards and that is VERY important to recognize. I went to an ivy league school, and I honestly did not like it very much. And even more importantly ... it didn't really help me out research wise. It looks nice on my CV but I really wish I would have found a school that cared more about me and my research rather than just picking a school because of its prestige. BUT with all that said, try to have fun. Its fun to see what options you have and its fun to imagine yourself in different places. And when you feel like you have a fit GO FOR IT! (sorry that was really long winded!!!!) Long story short... YOURE GONNA BE GREAT! SO JUST TRY AND ENJOY YOURSELF THROUGHOUT THIS JOURNEY!
@@BrisaMarie thank you for the advice! Right now I’m focusing on schools that have a good program, or those I found out about during my honors thesis research. The issue is I ended up with all prestigious schools on my application roster this term. I only have on Ivy League on my list which is Yale. But I’m also looking into NYU, and the University of Leipzig. My network from my honors college at my undergraduate university told me I need to apply o a few “safety” schools. But I don’t see any that have a program I’m interested in. Also, the list of schools making up my roster basically just fell into place.
I completely understand! I moved from Philly to Texas then to LA all on the year leading up my PhD!! I hope you have support to make the move a little more manageable!

Hi!! Congrats on your grad school acceptance!!! Thats amazing!!!! I ultimately did make a video about my reading strategies!!! I'll link them below... hopefully you'll find some of them useful!! ruclips.net/video/hhtFIvrzQdM/видео.html
Is it true that in the USA you don't have finals and thesis at the end of undergraduate studies? To get any degree in Russia you have to write a thesis. It's easier in bachelor's degree, of course, and consists of only 30-50 pages, but still. And we also have a final exam which consists of three-five basic subjects for this profession. If you fail any of these two, you don't get a degree. Though you can try to pass them next year
Hi! The process is different in the US for sure! In undergraduate studies you get final exams/tests/papers after every course! So rather than one big one at the end you have many throughout your career. Though a person's major heavily impacts if they are writing papers or taking tests. Engineers, for example, will take more exams than an Art history major who would be expected to write more papers. Some professions still require a major to test to work in the field even after you graduate in the US. So nurses or architects can get a degree in nursing or architecture but still need to pass their professional exam to be able to work in their profession, but that is not facilitated by the university... though the university is expected to prepare them to be successful for this test! Hope that helps!
your channel speaks to me. I'm struggling in undergrad right now (partly because I have a mental illness) and I'm not sure if I'll make it to grad school. Which I want to do. But the workload you mentioned did scare me off because writing is something I struggle with.
I am so glad that my channel speaks to you!! It can be intimidating to start grad school and its hard ESPECIALLY when you live with mental illness and other types of personal barriers. I do firmly believe that with the right community and looking into what resources each school has you most likely will find a school that can support you! Also, don't let the workload scare you too much! With time you gain the skills and personal strategies to get through it all!! I really hate reading and thats like 90% of grad school lol but somehow i made it work lol (i have a video that talks about what I do to make it work) but lol the most important thing to remember is if you really want it you TOTALLY can make it happen!
