You CANT know everything, but this is my effort to try and help you get that much closer... Yes! And no. Grind culture is definitely in grad school, but there is a unique phenomenon that grad student have where they have to dread/hate everything they are doing. Where if you don't act like everything is so hard, somehow you are being rigorous enough because "grad school is so hard" and while I do think grad school is difficult ... it doesn't have to be a negative experience too. lol BUT this is not the case for ALL grad students/programs and honestly in other places grind culture might be WAYYY more prevalent! And I would also encourage people not buy into that either lol! What has been your experience? Thank you for leaving such a positive comment! I really appreciate it!
Hi!!!! Thank you so much! That makes me so happy! I really apreciate you sharing that with me! Please let me know if you have any questions or video ideas!
Brisa thank you so much for your videos! I'm preparing to apply for different graduate programs and your tidbits have been so helpful in painting more of a picture of what to expect. :)
I am so happy that these videos have been helpful! Please let me know if you have any questions!!! I also have a grad admission playlist if you want to check it out (no pressure) ruclips.net/p/PLY-K7nK2wQ2WeWF9EfkwZFapB1fpjV2he&si=__U93gaGxxiMuEPM
Im in my first semester of my speech pathology masters program, I set out to have an open mind and really felt that I would adapt to whatever was thrown my way. At this moment, one month past the start.. I feel like Im trying as hard as I ever have when it comes to school and everything is being scrutinized.., my outta pocket cost look like enticing lottery winnings, Im barely making enough cash to withstand for 2 wks, I haven't slept, and I miss the 2 friends I have left. my feelings are so heavy, please take heed to this video graduate school is a whole new world. :/
I am soo sorry that things have begun with such a rough start. As you see I can very much relate. I really hope that you are able to find the support and community that can help you get through this process. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you just wanna vent in the comments that also totally allowed! I hope I can be helpful if you need it! Thank you for taking the time out to comment and share your experiences, I am sure it will help other graduate students be more prepared for the grad school process. Thank you!
That's soooo great to hear!!! It is totally understandable to be nervous!!! But not matterbhow things turn out at first, i always feel like if you don't give up you will get in!! Let me know if you have any questions and please please keep me updated! I always like to hear any news!
Yes! Of course!! And as you grow and build boundaries it can be easier and not so hard! Grad school is a process that can be enjoyable! Even if it is hard!
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such kind words in the comments!!!!! Thank you!!! I am so happy this video was helpful!
Thank you for all of this info!! I’m considering starting a masters program soon & I want to learn all that I can beforehand instead of just jumping in & then being shocked by something. Funding & making sure I can live securely is my biggest concern. I’m definitely going to look into grants & scholarships before taking out loans. I already owe from my undergraduate degree so I do not need to add on top of that.
I love how you are so gracious and helpful you are ❤️🥺 you’re going to go so far in life & your youtube channel is going to continue to grow 😍. I love your content!
Oh my GOODNESS!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You are soooo kind! You have no idea how much that means to me!! Thank you thank you thank you! I appreciate you and your comment so much 💙
Love your super positive advice! I was overwhelmed by the negativity that grad school is supposed to be hard and cause us suffering. Thank you for telling us that it is fine to have fun and succeding in grad school!
Of course! I am so excited to read your comment! It really makes me happy to know that this video has helped you feel a little bit better! You can totally succeed and have fun in grad school!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
Of course!! Don't worry!! You totally got this! Grad school just like everything is should be taken one day at a time! And you totally can succeed one day at a time!!!!
THANK YOU!!! What program are you heading into! I am so happy my content has been helpful! If you find yourself with ANY questions while in your grad school journey please do not hesitate to ask! I am always here !
Yes! I can totally understand! Its all new and intimidating! You are definitely not alone, but that doesn't make it feel better! Please let me know if you have any questions! I will do my best to help and support you!
CONGRATS!!!!! I am so happy this video was helpful! Always feel free to use the comments for questions if you have ANY!!! Congrats again! I am so excited for you and your grad school journey!
I'm thinking of going to grad school to do student services or academic advising this was interesting to hear about, thanks for sharing your experience
Of course!!! What's wild is even though i "know" not to... sometimes i still catch myself believing it hhhahahahah so it's always nice to have a little public reminder! Lol
Hahaha i love it!!! Its a pep talk that i sometimes need weekly!!! It's so easy to get caught up, but once we decide we aren't going to keep letting it happen... personally, grad school has gotten so much more manageable!!
Okay! I feel like somewhere I have a video on it but I can't remember... generally I would suggest asking around, seeing where your advisors/mentors go and what conferences they attend (they are usually connected to these orgs) Honestly this video on finding grants ... they are the exact same strategies I would use for academic professional organizations too Hopefully this helps! ruclips.net/video/oJ4_J8dfZ18/видео.html
Iv'e been out of school for 3 years and Iv'e been working, but have been wanting to go to Grad school. But I don't know where to start. I have a feeling of what I want to do but I'm still a little lost. I want to better myself and I remember I burnt myself out in undergrad and I dont want to to do that this time round.
Hi! that is totally understandable and you are definitely not alone! I think the best place to start is just thinking about different programs. Nothing is set in stone, so maybe by reading through what they offer you may be able to see somethings that excite your! Then you can follow the bread crumbs from there~ Once you have an idea of what you might be looking for, I do havea grad school admissions playlist that hopefully can help with the entire application process whenyou are ready! ruclips.net/p/PLY-K7nK2wQ2WeWF9EfkwZFapB1fpjV2he As for burn out... that is common but it doesn't have to be your experience . what is important to prevent burn out is that you have strong boundaries and know exactly what you can and cannot do! Of course that take practice! But you can FOR SURE have a grad experience without being burnt out. You just have be intentional!
an undergraduate degree is enough for many jobs. Truth is: many places you work will cross train you to do a lot of things because they expect one employee to go beyond the job you are hired for. Instead of grad school, plan to invest anything you would spend there in strategic investments. there is NO honor in heavy, high interest student loan debt, that should have been invested elsewhere.
Hi! This can be true for many fields but not all. Most graduate students are actually in their late 20s and mid-thirties. Meaning they aren't so young that they never worked. So most people who pursue grad school are very familiar with their field and their ability to progress with or without a degree. And from their they make the decisions that suit them best :) I also think many people (myself included) don't pursue grad school just to get a job or make money. There is a lot of value in life and learning outside of jobs. But regardless of their reasoning, grad school may be best for some and not for others!! And of course that is okay!! A lot of the content I make for ANYONE who wants to pursue grad school does speak a lot about the financial burden of school, with the goal to help people avoid student loans all together. Which is 10000% possible. It just takes a lot of planning and little bit of elbow grease! Thank you for commenting! It was a great point to bring up.
Were you able to be involved in campus organizations, clubs, or events while being a graduate student? I really want to be involved on campus bc COVID really ruined my undergrad years :/
YES!!!! I was in an acapella group and a dance group. I also was in some grad academic groups but they were wayyyy less sessions fun!!!! You can definitely join orgs as a grad student. Even undergrad ones if there aren't any grad alternatives!
I am sorry that you feel like you don't belong. Trust me, I have felt that too. I hope that you are able to find your community at your school and if not the #FuturePhD community is always here for all grads of all kinds!
Hi Brisa! I just graduated from undergrad, and I have no idea where to even start on looking for a program and applying to fellowships for grad school. This helps answers some of my questions, any more advice?
