- Join us as we go around in circles (in different directions) with a few excursions outside the main circle of I-5 and I-405 (which are very cool roads) around Portland Oregon as dusk turns to dark. All music and equipment FAQ's are in the closing credits.
The best Portland driving video I’ve ever seen:()
Thank you very much!
Portland looks so beautiful. So lush and green with all the forested areas sourounding the higways.
Until 1980 I-84 was known as 80N. Quarterflash used to be Seafood Mama. I am old enough to remember. Thanks for all the great videos. As a retired long-haul trucker it's great to revisit places I've been.
I love the way Portland have a small beltway around the downtown area which is like 8 to 9 miles going around.
This is one of your best videos, great editing, perfect music and amazing road network!
Thank you very much!
Guijhuentda I agree, Stylo by Gorillaz fit PERFECTLY for a nighttime urban area! ;)

Great Knowlegable video. You can also visit our hotel video ruclips.net/video/oYK6irqCOEA/видео.html
I really really enjoyed this. It's overcast right now in NY and this was just right. Thank you Freeway!
Thanks for watching!
He respawn I enjoyed it to

I got to come and live up here for a few months from April to November, stayed in Beaverton but was doing some work in Gresham. Nearly everyday i would do the exact route home you did at the beginning of the video and it never got old.
Every chance I got I went to go drive a few laps around "the loop" downtown. The hard part was deciding which direction to go because as you just showed you can't go wrong either direction you go! You captured it beautifully. Watching this video just brings back so many memories and transports me back to Portland. Can't wait to go back again this summer
Thank you very much, yeah there all options are great going around that loop, this was the only night I've visited the area so I wanted to make the most of it, neat city.
Sir, I LOVE your channel, fully addicted
Thank you very much!
4:07 wow thats so cool Great editing jim!
Thank you! I was happy with how that turned out.
Driving and jamming to good music, two of some of my favorite things. Add in exploring a beautiful city, and it makes this perfect!
Thank you!
Great! I really enjoyed this video. Respect and love from the Republic of Estonia!
Thank you very much!
This is beautiful! Love all the incredible effects just masterful keep it up!!
Enjoyed the video and soundtrack, in which both were quite the variety!!! It doesn't matter how many times I will see the Fremont bridge, it amazes me every time! :)
And also, I am a previous resident of Denver, Co. And I thought Denver was the most beautiful city but I think I need to rethink that!
I went from texas to living in denver and I thought the same thing, until I moved to Portland.
I've been around most of the country and Denver and Portland are still my top 2 cities in the country
Never realized how beautiful Portland is
It is until you run into the homeless camps
When I watch this video, it gives me so much deja vu. Especially when you went on I-405 North and South lots of times.
I went to Portland again during the Thanksgiving and your video reminds me of my time there (actually my car was broken in near the 405 in downtown lol)
I remember one night I want from Beaverton to Vancouver. When I was on I-405 near Everett/Glisan, it was so foggy I could barely see street lights from 100 feet away. When I was on the lower deck of the bridge about where the land meets the water, I could see perfectly. I was very relieved... until I hit the dense fog on the other side of the bridge. I started grumbling until I realized what had happened.
I just had to get off at Going Way and turn around. I got on the upper deck. What a view! I could see the West Hills, Mount Hood, the Koin Tower, US Bancorp tower, a couple of buildings in the Lloyd District, and that's all. Everything else was sleeping under the fog. That was 17 years ago, but I'll never forget that view.
That sounds awesome
Really love ❤️ watching this since I’ve never been to Oregon or anywhere in the west coast for that matter. Thank you so much 😊. Portland is a beautiful city
Thank you!
Portland looks so beautiful! I've never been there but I will be there in 20 days! As a child of the 80's, I really loved the musical choices too on the video! Great job!
Thank you very much!
Liberals have destroyed it
It looks good fun burning up and down them roads I wish I was there now
It was :)
Good video.. but my thing is when you was on the freeway heading to Beaverton you just should of stayed on it.. Beaverton, Troutdale, Tigard, Tuallitan, all of that is part of Portland.. Gresham. You know. You could of the freeway all around the city of Portland. Into Vancouver,Wa also.. ijs sir. Great video though..
Thanks, I was staying in the Portland area that night, don't have time to get everything.
I'm a few years late to the party, but never too late to a Big Jim classic!
Loved the video, LOVED the music, just perfect!
Thank you for the comment and for watching.
It's a good thing you added two one-hit wonders of Portland, OR based artists in this drive video around Portland, OR. Both songs did peak at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. "I Can't Wait" was at #3 for a week on June 14, 1986, losing to "Live to Tell" by Madonna which falls to #2 and "On My Own" by Patti Labelle, and Michael McDonald which climbs to #1. "Harden My Heart" was at #3 for two weeks between February 13 to 20, 1982, losing to "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" by Daryl Hall & John Oates at #2 and "Centerfold" by The J. Geils Band at its peak at #1.
This lamb enjoyed the views of the city. The flock all were wondering why speed limits seemed to be so low.
The roads are kind of tight and curvy, the speed limits are actually reasonable, plus the limits on the west coast are always a little on the low side, go inland to the next state and it's 80 MPH..
Masterpiece , I will watch again and again.
Thanks, glad you like it!
I just watched this again, this time on the big screen with 300 watts of 5.1 surround, a truly awesome video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it again, it's one of my favorites from the trip.
I really appreciate all the work and effort you put in every video ,Jim. US is a place worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Love the roads
Thank you very much!
Portland has some really cool freeways. Very nice scenery as well! Great video Jim!
Thank you and the freeways really are cool there, fun to drive in minimal traffic.
This is one of your BEST videos. Portland looks absolutely beautiful and the music and editing was *chefs kiss* 🤌🏽🤌🏽
Thank you very much, I was pretty happy with how it turned out :)
Wow fun video, good music thanks to you also music group from Portland w/dates of highways a great package to share
Thank you for watching!
You truly create some great videos with excellent music and graphics! I can't wait for the day I can go to all of the places you've been.
Thank you, I hope you get to all those places, they are even better in person.
Great video again as always! Also great music, I love hearing muse again!
Thanks Joe, got two more videos with Muse still to come, my son turned me on to them during this trip.
Very nice ride through Portland! Have always wanted to check out the city for it's quirkiness and it's freeways as well! Very well-done and well worth waiting for a time to sit, relax and enjoy your video! Also, cool effects at points, very cool factoids- and a great soundtrack too!
Thank you, Portland is a VERY COOL freeway city, glad you enjoyed it.
That was a smooth great ride through Portland at night!
Thank you!
I could totally feel your excitement of driving around Portland in this video, simply by the number of times you kept passing through, over and over, lol. Same feeling I had, the first few times I visited Portland and drove its freeways. Awesome video from start to finish.
Thanks, yeah I wanted to see everything in every direction for sure.
Jim, you've eradicated a bit of my ignorance. Having lived and spent time in Seattle, Portland was generally viewed as Seattle's "baby brother" in a less than endearing connotation. I've never been to Portland, but your video cleared up whatever misconceptions I may have had about the city, as it is absolutely beautiful, unique and happens to have some awesome architecture (buildings and highway infrastructure). Thanks for the Vid!
This is the exact type of comment I was looking for. I've lived in west Gresham all my life (what everyone considers the main ghetto of the Portland area), but I've spent lots of time in Portland of course. I'm glad that this video was able to shed light on our city more, many seem to think its small and I hate seeing maps that show the major cities and they put Seattle but not Portland on it :(
The city is big and it is very nice, and as for the baby brother thing, I think a more realistic way of putting it would be the less successful but older brother (we once were greater than Seattle, until about the turn of the 20th century).
Wow, great tour of the downtown hub and "spokes"! Definitely agree about that northern I-5/I-405 interchange: it's great from all angles
Thank you!
Cool video. My late great uncle did a lot of electrical work for ODOT around Portland when these freeways were first being built.
Kind of reminds me of Pittsburgh. Weather and all. Thank you for the video Jim.
That's a very good comparison, although the roads are in much better shape in Portland :) thanks for watching.
I loved this ride, especially on US 26. When you were along I-84, to the right was the Portland MAX, one of the first modern Light Rail systems ever built in the United States.
Thanks!
This feels strange to watch. I've been to the states once in my life in 2005 (I was 17 at that time) and that was a three weeks' stay in Salem, OR. We made many trips to Portland back then, but at that time I was not yet interested in maps and geography OR road structures. So when I watched this, I hoped that I would recall an intersection or such, but there is nothing. I am astonished about how beautiful Portland is, though. Wish I had realized it at that time already.
Awesome! You made it to my neck of the woods. I live in Salem, Oregon. I've actually driven every highway In your video pretty awesome.
Thanks, enjoyed it too!
Amazing video as usual!! Great music choices, love the lights, just awesome! I hope you got a chance to explore the city, I hear that it is a unique place!
Thank you very much, we did go through downtown and visited Powell's Bookstore (no filming), which was awesome, neat city indeed.
That's great! Glad you had a good time. :)
I had no idea Nu Shooz was from Portland, and I grew up there.
I have so many memories with these roads, especially the tunnels on Sunset, since I lived in Beaverton
Thank you for watching!
that was quite the tour de force. Great production on this one Jim. I was there once in 1984. Didn't see much other than the ship yard I was at.
Thanks John, it's a really neat place.
Very good music sync!
Thank you!
Great video. I recently visited. Traffic is variable. I couldn’t live there unless I got a handsome salary. It’s pretty. I would visit again.
Thank you for watching!
when i saw the map of your 2016 vacation, i was very happy that you would be going through my original home town of portland, and i've been eagerly anticipating your videos from there. this one did not disappoint! it brought back a lot of memories. i'm looking forward to next week's as well. i'm hoping as well that you will post some video of going east on interstate 84, especially through the columbia river gorge and going up cabbage hill just east of pendleton. that's another freeway i remember very very well.
Thank you, yes we filmed a good chunk of I-84 through the Columbia River Gorge, wish the lighting was better but I think it came out OK all things considered (coming a week from Monday) and Cabbage Hill is the next video after that.
Hi Jim! Awesome highway trip video! Highways are the best just like you! Keep up the awesomeness work
Thank you!
Great video! I've never seen much of Portland the two or three times I've been there (had a strong focus and schedule of things to do and only for a couple of days) so it's nice to see this much of it. I instantly recognized Nu Shooz and knew they were from Portland, so I thought "Nice touch." :-D
Thank you, I thought it was a pretty neat city, wish I had more time there.
Wow, you're right. Boise doesn't give off this same vibe at all! I always thought that the PNW would be similar, or all the same and included Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Buy each one is uniquely different!
Portland is more like (not exactly like) Pittsburgh than any other city in the US IMO. The rivers, bridges, hills, size, several similarities.
@@Freewayjim Wow, thanks for pointing this out! I've been to Pittsburgh and loved it (back in the mid 70's). In your opinion. what city does the Seattle area resemble? The first time I saw Portland I thought it was a mini version of San Francisco and it seemed dirty to me. I didn't like it at all. And now with all the riots and destruction that's being allowed to overtake it, it's just a matter of time before it's another version of California -- the seedier parts. Sad to see such beauty being mutilated.
@@carriekay5987 Seattle is highly unique (and one of my favorite cities), not sure there is anything in the US to compare it to. Yeah, I can see where it would be seen as a bigger Portland. Pittsburgh has changed drastically since the 1970s, the skyline is beautiful and the city has really been cleaned up....many of the roads still date back to the 1950s though, and look it. This is the best Pittsburgh video I have, from 2014. ruclips.net/video/9NJlLsgY-jc/видео.html
very enjoyable ride on some awesome freeways
Thank you and they are very cool freeways to drive.
Thumbs up for the music alone!
I appreciate that, thank you!
Where do I begin? Another video that has shot up to the top of my favorites list. A Gondola right over the freeway!
Funny thing about No Shooz, I made a mix tape for a young lady in Colorado Springs back in '87, and "I can't wait" was part of it. I recognized it with the first few notes. It sure brought back a few memories! We love your Dusk-to-Dark videos, Jim!
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciate your input, glad you liked this one....has not heard that song in a while until I started with his video and found out they were from Portland, had to use it.
Great video & soundtrack. Nice job !
Thank you!
I love to watch these videos!!!! the music fits perfectly. wesome!!
I meant awesome lol
Thanks, much appreciated :)
The video thumbnail, it reminds me Japanese Expressway.... maybe because it has fences on the side. But as always, great video Jim! Keep it up!
Thank you, it kind of does.
Nicely done!! 😃
Thank you!
That was really awesome Jim !
Thank you very much!
I wanna move here when I’m older
Me too
4LIVE FH4 to Portland?? You’ll love here.. move here almost 13 years ago. And I love it here.. it’s expensive though. And getting over crowded. Beside that. Excellent city..
I would be careful because it’s getting dangerous because of all the homeless people and drug addicts there! But you can still find some safe neighborhoods if you do research! Generally I avoid downtown
I would just stay at the suburbs, be careful.
@@InkaBall: because they passed Measure 110 which legalized drugs! I wouldn’t go to Portland ever! It’s a crime ridden homeless dump! It used to be cheap and beautiful to live but it’s gotten expensive just like Liberal cities like Los Angeles, California
I’m an Uber driver in Portland who obviously cannot go to work during this quarantine, so this video is a pretty excellent representation of my typical night and really makes me feel like I’m out and about working again. Thanks for the upload!
Also, what dashcam are you using that looks this good during the dark hours?
Thank you for watching and for the comment, my gear is listed in the closing credits, I use a Sony HDR-PJ710 video camera, no dashcam.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😆. Song funny for you
@@Bigben2u can you repeat that in english

Hi FreewayJim i feel like Your passenger Enjoying the Drive & Music while driving through Portland lol and Great Video!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Portland is beautiful!
Charlie ND ikr I live in SF
No more it’s got ruined since they decriminalized drugs, homeless people everywhere now
Used to live in Hillsboro back in 1986-98 back before it got all built up 'n' shit. When I worked in SE Portland that ride on the Sunset Highway to the Banfield via the Marquam Bridge was my daily commute!
I see the Ferris wheel was set up in Waterfront Park. Must have been Rose Festival time.
Absolutely stunning! I love seeing a video of the city I'm from (well, Gresham, but still Portland), I love the few times I get to drive around the loop and see downtown... I like to put on "I like the way you move" when driving on the freeway near downtown, just gives the best vibes...
Thank you for enlightening more people on the true beauty of this city, many ignore us and many even say we're a small city! With 2.4 million in the metro area and 660k in the city alone, I don't at all consider my city small.
Thank you very much! That was my only time in Portland and was really impressed, what a neat place!
@@Freewayjim You should visit again! And thank you, I've actually never been far out of the Portland area (no more than 80 miles east west or south of the city), but I explore the world by looking through things like this, even though its not as good as the real thing. Its interesting to know how good our freeways look and everything, as I said, I've not been far out so I didn't know that other freeways tend to look worse. Your channel is quite interesting, ill be watching more of it!
@@zkittlezthabanditt604 Thank you, I'd love to get back out there someday but I live in the Atlanta area, not an easy task. I have a friend who knows Portland well and he compares it to Pittsburgh, PA, which si a good comparison (Pittsburgh's roads and bridges are a lot older) you might want to look around that city some.
@@Freewayjim Actually i did start to watch your Pittsburgh trip, it seems interesting, I've never really investigated Pittsburgh much but after seeing how cool the city looks, I think I might visit there one day. In fact, when I grow older maybe I'll travel the freeways like you do! That would be awesome
@@zkittlezthabanditt604 Travelling is a blast! I hope you get to go everywhere you want to someday.
Hi from Portland. Great video.
Thank you!
Good song selection! I like Nu Shooz A lot!
Thank you!
Hi Jim I really enjoyed your video!!! 😊
Glad to hear it, thank you!
This dusk to night video border's on LEGENDARY!! I had no idea Portland had such scenic views.
And the music threaded the eye candy into a symphony of beautiful views....nicely executed!
Thank you very much for that! glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, Portland is quite a city. my cousin actually lives there right now.
David Carson b
Thinking back on your Pittsburgh video, the freeways and so on, with the greenery around and the fact that it's also on a river, makes me think these two cities look very similar! Do you see that and agree with it?
Beautiful city.
Hey Jim, I absolutely enjoyed that ride, and did I detect a little music editing, great job! It was a good idea to allow the police officer to merge over into the left lane in front of you, better in front than behind you.(Lol), I love the scenery of the Ferris wheel at (18:40) as you stated there was so much going on in the foreground.. Love the old school classics!
Thank you James and yes, from time to time I will take liberties and edit parts of songs in or out of the video, gotta make it all come together :)
Your a multi-talented man!!!!! Great job!!! Coming from a retired DJ....
Much appreciated!
Very cool video, it was nice to come back to after my honeymoon!
Thank you and congratulations!
Give a big hell yeah if you from Portland and speak English with the Squawmie accent!!!
Great ride Jim! You kinda brought it there.
Thanks, yeah I was feeling it :)
Fantastic!
Thank you!
This is the best night tour you've ever done. IMO Portland looks a lot like Milwaukee except without the hills
Thank you! It's more like Pittsburgh than anything. The upcoming Las Vegas dusk to dark video is on the level with this one.
Hopefully, one day, you'll be able to visit the Rose City of Ontario: My hometown of Welland in Niagara. Nice choice for music, BTW.
Thank you!
Loved the music and the video. Have a blessed day Freewayjim! Also my birthday is on Friday
Happy Birthday, Justin! Many happy returns of the day!
Thanks and Happy Birthday.
love the soundtrack :)
Thank you!
WOW the expressway infrastructure in Portland is beautiful. It’s like work of arts out there and not an eyesore like most of the urban interstates were when they were built. I’m sure the community was heavily involved with this because of local opposition. At least that is what I could assume haha
Yeah, people here were arguably more protestant against these than in the notorious San Francisco, which led to more carefully built freeways and less destruction :)
Excellent! interesting that most of freeways in the Portland area are no more than 3 lanes in each direction.
Thanks and good observation.
So I guess this means you've officially clinched all 3 405's, right? Haha! Love the vid too... I have to say I've been to Portland many times but never really seen much of the freeways cuz I usually end up Amtrak'ing my way down there, but now I feel like I gotta go play around on the Freemont Bridge for a bit. :)
I have not circled/clinched all of I-405 around Seattle, did not drive it north of WA-520. Oh yes, the Fremont bridge is very cool, especially from ground level, worth exploring.
Well you didn't miss much on WA's 405... Just a few flyover ramps to the north at SR 522 and the infamous "S-curves" to the south but neither are extremely noteworthy (And the S-curves have a bad rap as one of the worst traffic spots around here... to the point where the "S" has been in debate if that means the shape of the highway or possibly a censored-out word... haha)
That bridge ramp is like hotwheels
It is and it is awesome!
Love those night time views
Thanks
I just love western and pac. NW freeways. They're so modern and complex.
Great video🛣🚘🏙😀👌
Thank you very much!
Now that's some Muse-ic right there! :-)
Thanks
Hey did you flim Delaware? Or am i missing
Great music choice!!
Thank you
The I5 is only two lanes in parts of Portland? Crazy. I expected it to be bigger
As of 2023 I-405 & The Fremont Bridge is Now 50 Years Old
awesome video
Thanks
Hey Jim, you need to check out Highway 401 in Toronto. You ever thought about coming up here?
I'm aware of that road and I've thought about it, just don't have any plans to go up there in the near future.
That was an epic journey Jim! I'm quite fond with dusk to dark videos because they just look awesome. And the variety in the soundtrack was cool too!!
Thanks, glad you liked it, these types of videos are fun to film and produce.
Frederick Herriot actually brings up a good point +Freewayim. Will we be seeing you do any canadian freeways?
Not in the foreseeable future.
No LED. Love it.
the sound track is on point
Thank you!
