I love how unimpressed Lemonade seemed 😂 I've never had hamsters but my guinea pigs LOVED being returned to a freshly cleaned home. Especially for the hay. It seemed to hit different with fresh bedding than when it was topped up otherwise!
Another video idea: good materials to build stuff out of for hamsters. Cork, different kinds of wood, good vs bad cardboard to use? Could also do a similar substrate video where you review different kinds of substrate, like shavings vs paper vs coconut fiber, maybe sphagnum moss? They might be fun for you to do and would be useful for me!
I am still not in a place that I can adopt a hamster yet, but I'm still catching up on learning care. And this is the first time I realized not only do you need a big clean inbetween pets, but also generally every so often. I thought it was spot cleans only... So cheers for sharing this!
I’m a trans guy with a strong passion for hamsters and other small animals, and you’re an amazing inspiration to me and such a great human being Ollie ❤️ :)
Fantastic!! I just did this for Bruno last week because I got him a new coated hide so it would stop absorbing pee like a sponge and figured it was a good time to take everything out and give it a good clean. I kept all old (but clean) substrate to put back and thankfully my boy is lazy af and only "burrows" (if you can even call it that) in his hide, so it's very easy to know where to avoid disturbance as much as possible. As for video idea, boredom breakers using cheap and recycled things. For example, I use drink carriers to hide stuff under, which isn't imaginative but I know you can do much better 🤣
My last dwarf hamster was a bit of a ghost hamster that always used his hide as a toilet. Sometimes he'd randomly come out in middle of the day and I tried to wait till he was awake before cleaning, but often I just had to wake him up because it was stinky and he was never very impressed.
Hello Ollie, thank you for the video! I love your setup :) thank you also for mentioning the colored bedding you used. I've been wanting green colored paper bedding, but for some reason no one makes green bedding that's not mixed in with other colors. Do you know if it is safe to use tissue paper, the kind that goes in present boxes/bags? I don't think I've ever seen colored kitchen tissue/paper towels where I live.
Tissue paper for gifts is less cozy than napkins/kitchen tissue, so maybe not. Try looking at party stores or in the birthday areas of local stores, if you can! Hope you find what you're looking for :)
Hey I have a hamster of 2 years and 1 month, he is still active and eating but she weighs only 39 grams. And she has a tumour right above her eye. My question to you is how can I tell if she has a lot of pain from het eye? She doesn’t squint her eyes shut. And how do I let her gain weight?
Hamsters can be quite good at hiding pain so it's difficult to judge, but if she's not squinting or rubbing her eye and is otherwise behaving normally that's a positive sign that she isn't too bothered by the tumour. Watch out for redness around the eye, swelling in the eyelid or any scabbing as that could indicate that she's rubbing/scratching the area. You didn't mention her species, but if she's the hamster in your profile pic then 39g isn't a worrying weight for a dwarf. A little age-related weight loss is completely normal, it comes from a depletion of muscle mass rather than a loss of fat and it's just a normal part of old age. If you want to help her put on a little more fat (which can be helpful for older animals) then offer plenty of high calorie foods and treats, if she can still eat hard foods then try adding more nuts to her diet (peanut butter is good if she needs softer foods). If you currently scatter feed then you might also want to consider offering a bowl of food as well so she has quicker access to larger quantities of food. High protein foods will help slow the muscle loss, mealworms, eggs, plain chicken, tofu, lentils, etc. Overall I would try not to worry too much, she sounds like she's doing alright considering her age and medical condition. Just keep her as comfortable as possible and spoil her with treats :)
Not certain right now, I'm still saving up the money to get the glass and mesh it's just taking a little longer than I expected. I'm hoping it will be done sometime in March 🤞
Lemonade's back and forth through the empty potty spot made me chuckle. "What mortal dares to steal the royal poops of the Lemon God! I shall have vengeance!" Also, your voice sounds so relaxing 💜thank you for helping me come down from overstimulation and anxiety. As for video ideas, I intended to make Apple Walnut bites for the hamsters where I work.. but my coworker is allergic to nuts, and so I can't make them a treat with nuts in it. Is there possibly a nut free healthy treat you make your hamsters, one that would be safe for use around folk who have allergies?
Well, I just learned I went overboard when I had One, cleaning the cage once a week but the cage may have been twice as small and there wasnt google or youtube yet... This changes my thoughts a bit...
I lost my hamster a few weeks ago. Now I only have gerbils (just got a new pair) but the process is basically the same. Gerbils are a bit easier to clean, imo, because their waste is drier. I love your set up. It's hamster heaven.
I have a dwarf hamster her name is nugget she's white with little Grey patches my parents got her for me for Christmas they had her in one of the starter cages which I wasn't a fan of BC it was really tiny and she didn't have much room to run so I with the money I had and bought a bigger cage and some tubing for her to move around in and connected it to one of my old hermit crab cage (yes I cleaned it. It was just one I had them in when I didn't have an many as I do now) so nugget has two cages she can run back and forth from and a lot of hiding spots :› ik its not the best and I wish to have a setup like you one day but bc my parents believe the pet store more then the internet and content creators that may be awhile ;-; I'm still trying to befriend nugget
I miss having a hamster so much 🥺 Also, I was showing my boyfriend your channel and I noticed that you introduced yourself as Ollie, and I'm just wondering what your pronouns are. Right now I refer to you as they/them, but if that's wrong I'd like to change it to the correct ones 🙈❤
It would also be loud and could stress out the hamster, as well as other animals in the room. Plus he said in the video that he doesn't get rid of 100% of the bedding, just what needs to be renewed.
I was shocked too like what in the Elizabeth Holmes am I watching? Then checked the ABOUT lol. Kinda saw it coming like 5-6 years ago tbh. Good for him.

Omg, Your voice has gotten so good.
Love all the oranges and greens in the setup!

Happy hammys are so cute!
🥰!
I love watching them explore a new clean setup! Or “play”/ use a new toy ❤
Would love a video on your daily life... like what you eat, do, cleaning etc.. lots of love from the Netherlands Joyce

That's actually a great idea...
Great point…hamsters are neat (meaning “tidy”) lil creatures….another reason to ❤️ owning them.
Video idea- What do you recommend for food and a feeding routine

When is part two of the latest hamster build? 🙂

You should make a paper machete lemon for lemonade
What cleaning products are hamster safe? Is any antibacterial wipe ok?
Do you leave her in cage while cleaning?

video idea / challenge...using cardboard and toilet roll tubes to create unique amazing boredom breakers / enrichment .
What kind of antibacterial wipe do you use? Is it just Clorox or something else?
Just a generic supermarket brand, it's the alcohol-based kind that you can use to disinfect your hands and food prep surfaces :)
@@SomethingAnimal Thank you

Merch store is down?
Is that tissue paper?
is it just me or did their voice get deeper?
You are correct as ollie is transitioning and his voice has got deeper :)

It’s he/him (from instagram)
@@juzgalmar478 thank you so much! I don't use Instagram, so I really appreciate you telling me
Cleaning your hamster's mansion 😁.
Is the bare minimum really a mansion?
with a vacuum cleaner you would clean it up pretty quickly

What happened to her voice? No hate, just confused.
I believe he has transitioned. His Instagram shows he/him as preferred pronouns.
