  • This video will show you how to fix the RetroFlag NesPI case and do a real SAFE shutdown, and not a hard reset that can corrupt your SD card!
    There are other fix's out there, but unfortunately it did not work for me or some other people. So I made my own simple solution that's guaranteed to work :)

    I think the culprit for the failure of the resistor mod is almost always the shutdown script. The resistor mod is totally incompatible with the standard shutdown scripts.
    The standard safe shutdown script expects pin 5 to normally be in a high state. When you push the shutdown button, pin 5 gets shorted to ground and gets pulled down to a low state. When the script detects this low state, it shuts the Pi down.
    With the resistor mod, pin 5 is constantly pulled low because of the resistor to ground. When the reset button is pushed, pin 5 gets pulled up to 3.3 volts and ends up in a high state. When the resistor mod's proper shutdown script detects the high state, it shuts the Pi down.
    So what happens if you do the resistor mod but have a regular shutdown script? The pi powers up, the script immediately sees that pin 5 is already in a low state, and it shuts the pi down.
    Conversely, the resistor mod's shutdown script causes trouble if you take the Pi out of the Nespi case. Without the resistor constantly pulling pin 5 to ground, the script immediately sees that pin 5 is in a high state and shuts down the Pi on startup.
    The advantage of the modification in this video is that it makes the reset button behave just like any other shutdown button. It is compatible with normal shutdown scripts. I'd say go with this mod if you already have a shutdown script running on your pi. You won't have to deal with the headache of the script constantly shutting down the Pi.
    The advantage of the resistor mod is that it does not require you to cut any traces on the power board. Just two resistors, a wire, and a couple of shorted pins, and you're good to go. As long as you install the proper script and make sure to get rid of any old scripts, it should work totally fine. It works great for me.

    Ive lost count how many times Ive corrupted the SD card because I was unable to shut it down properly and because of the undervoltage issue caused by the original Nespi case. It's such a critical flaw in the design.

    I just physically cut the plastic so the reset button does nothing. It does not click in, super glued it so it does not move in. So basically the Reset button is stationary now. Just shutdown and then press power button. This was a cool method you showed us though, for those that are afraid to fool around with soldering, just try this method. Maybe Glen can show a video of doing my way instead? Its a lot safer and takes little to no skill.

      Cunundrum they do sell them but I got this one from an old IBM PC case it was one of the wires that went to an LED at the front panel I simply cut it off and then pulled the female gpio connector out of the plastic sheeting that would have gone to the IBM PC LED jumper pin.. and my friend by the way no stupid questions

    Well I made this mod and works wonderful but I would say that the reset button has two valid positions. If the button is pressed you create a circuit between pins 1-2 and 3-4, but it you don't press it there is an active circuit between 3-4 and 5-6.
    So those are two valid options depending on what you want to do with the pin and how do you implement your script.
    I also made my own shutdown script that differentiates between a short press and a long press. That way I can exit an emulator (even if it crashes) back to emulation station for a more Nes Classic feel, or long press the button for a complete shutdown.
    Also, its important to say that ping 5 its used, because after a safe shutdown it can be restarted by pressing the reset button. It was an important feature in other cases without power management but not really that much on this one.

      Glen Planamento had mine for about a month and I'm digging it the biggest thing is making sure print bed is at right height when print starts. So I have to watch the beginning of print like a hawk! But I got a routine down now. Some filaments colors melt easier than others so that's where it gets a little tricky.

    Hi Glen! I'm new to the PI community. Just got my Nespi case and pre-loaded PI3 with roms.
    If I understand correctly besides the soldering, there isnt any further commands that have to be typed into the system? I saw Primes video where after adding the resisters, he typed some commands into the PI. Is this necessary, or is just the soldering wires alone will put the PI into safe shutdown?
    Sorry for the dumb question, just worried about messing up my PI. I just want to play my retro games, and not hassle with going into the menu to shut down
    BTW... I just subbed to your channel

    Glen - Quick question for you -- Could the Power button be isolated in this way instead ( since it is a locking switch instead of momentary) - So that both could be isolated and the SAfe shut down added to the Power button and the Reset could be used as a normal momentary switch and set to be a Home button ( to return to the Emulation Station game menu ?? )
    I believe the Pi GPIO shut down only reads state changes so a locking switch might be useable with the script as is - but am not sure and figured you might know.

    • @GlensRetroShow
      @GlensRetroShow  7 лет назад

      John Fanning In therory yes. I also think the lock in the power switch could be removed making it a momentary switch..I will look into this..

    • @johnfanning4275
      @johnfanning4275 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the reply -- Ideally the power button could be used to turn power on/off and the reset could be used for resetting out of a game and back to the selection menu - Figure that way novice users would get the result they expect when hitting the buttons rather than cutting power and possibly corrupting the sd card - ( I've bought several of these and plan on using some as XMAS gifts this year - and some of the recipients are not that good at following instructions so making it work this way would save some troubleshooting time in the future ! )
      I agree with you that it is a bit of a shame they did so much work on the design only to leave this one area lacking.

    You claim there is a problem and then show something completely different. You say it shows logos and then shuts down? I didn't see logos.
    After reviewing your fix, I have to agree. This fix makes it far more direct and simple. It makes sense. That will be the approach I will take.
    Further suggestions? If you're going to run an ad in your video, make it obvious. State whether or not it's a sponsor. Also, WEAR PANTS you freak! No one wants to see that.

    • @GlensRetroShow
      @GlensRetroShow  7 лет назад

      erroneus yes I couldn't find the video. it depended on the build I had used. It depended on if it had been a pre-made pi image or when I started from scratch. this particular one was one where I started from scratch you initiated the boot it's got to the point where you would get to the emulationstation logo screen and it shuts down. if I had used a video image whereas as it turned on and played the boot video for the pi, you would see the video and then it would shut down immediately. so I do apologize it's not the one I described but that is the outcome.

  • @Turn2Video
    @Turn2Video 7 лет назад +1

    I did something very similar, I cut the traces on top (switch side) just like you did, but I did all of my soldering on the solder side. I suspect the reason the other didn't work is it is slightly different code with a pull up contact vs a pull down,,, but that is just a guess. I agree with you I like this way much better and I already had the code in for this way of doing it. Thanks for putting the video together.

    Hi Glen, I'm having some problems with the modification, and was hoping you might know what could be wrong? I've followed your vid except I ran a wire to the bottom -GND instead of pin9. I've also installed ETA Prime's shutdown script because I figured that was still necessary, although you don't really mention it in the vid. Problem is immediate shutdown after power-on. When I disable the shutdown command in the script it boots fine, only shutdown of course doesn't work. When doing soft-shutdown I can however power it up again with the reset button.
    Also when script is active and it does the immediate shutdown, I can boot up as long as I press and holding the reset button, releasing the reset then it kill it.
    Hoping you might have any ideas? Thanks

I used pin #5 and ground.. it sounds like maybe you have his nespi shutdown script it works different .. if you each his ETA Prime channel, use the video for a pin 5 shutdown script.... You may need to reimage a clean build to make sure the old script is gone

      Hi Glen, thanks for the quick reply, I didn't even know there were multiple scripts. I could very well be using the nespi shutdown script, I'll will have to check. But thanks for pointing me in the right directing!!!

      Glen Planamento hi glen, wasn’t gonna do it tonight as its 2am in these parts of the world. But it kept bugging me. So I just re-imaged the sd-card, found the right ETA script and now finally its working.
      You were absolutely right on the money there! Thanks.
      Now i can go back to sleep!

    I exit out of Retro Pie properly then turn off the power button on the Nespi. There’s no HDMI signal after about 20 when I power off. What’s the big deal?
