I was in a restaurant and I asked the lady playing the piano to play this. she was Ok, and some 25 yr old made a crack that "it sounded like Charlie Chaplin was gonna walk in". This made me feel that YOUNG PEOPLE are DOPES and can't appreciate anything other than their own current pop music crap. Well, you sir are a young person who is GREAT in piano and "GET" Scott Joplin. You have the syncopation down, ever during the low to high note flourish. Tremendous talent. There is hope for all of us!
Great technique! Smooth and flowing without any "pounding," playing a song that almost requires "choppiness." You've got superior touch, and played the entire piece without nary a misplaced finger!
i didn't go through 360 comments to check if anyone had mentioned it yet, but the two times you slow down are amazing. i have never heard that before, but it fits perfectly. kudos.
dude i think this is the first maple leaf rag's performance i see that is WELL played! it sounds great! =) honestly i think it IS the best performance of this piece I've seen on youtube ;)
Nice one! I wanted to see someone playing this piece and picked yours because you just looked like you knew what you were doing. The piano itself is perfect as well.
Wow I haven't watched this video since 2007, when I was in High School, learning this piece. Great performance. Hope all is going great for you in 2020. Thanks for the inspiration
Just started learning this song and got the first two sections. As a mostly classical player (until becoming my schools jazz pianist) I find the "bouncy" left hand challenging. Anyway, you are a great pianist and did a wonderful job, keep playing!
Really enjoyable to hear and foot tap to your great, bouncy version. I couldn't understand why so many Canadian musicians chose to play this catchy tune until finally the flag caught my attention. Scott Joplin deserves to be posthumously given Canadian nationality and appointed as The National Composer for this most joyful of rags.
Outstanding rendition of a real classic played at the correct pace! I have listened to the rest and you are the best. Congratulations again. Tim in Dublin.
Evanissimo - you have inspired me to learn the piano - this is truly beautiful. I have just watched/listened to it 10 times consecutively and it has brought tears to my eyes. I can't play a single note and don't know where to start learning, but somehow I will. My goal is that in 5 years time I will be posting my version up here. I only hope it does some kind of justice to your magnificent rendition. Thanks so much for sharing this...it is truly inspirational. Right...now to find a piano teacher
Absolutely excellent! I never get tired of watching this video. This is my favorite Scott Joplin song and this is the best version I've seen on You Tube. I'd love to be able to just sit down at a piano and crank this out like this. AAA+++!!!
I think that people who are in nursing homes these days would think of Ragtime as their parents music. They'd probably be a lot happier if you played some swing or big band music as that represents their youth. I DJed at a nursing home once and I thought it was awesome that all of the elderly people loved Squirel Nut Zippers.
thphaca knows what he/she is talking about. All of the great early stride and jazz piano players used to battle it out to see who could play the certain rag pieces the fastest (check out Art Tatum playing "Tiger Rag" for a jaw dropping example). But, in fact Scott Joplin himself said rag should be played slow and not rushed.
Out of all the people that I have heard play this one, I like yours the best. I cant explain it , its just right. Very good . I am learning it my self. I am afraid of that last part. I t looks impossible.
Ah. I love this song. I learned how to play it about 2 years ago, and i must be getting rusty, because I still make mistakes playing it. Such a nice catchy tune.
I really like your version. Not only is at the right tempo (or atleast the tempo I like), all your notes are very even. With this song, its easy to fall onto the notes too quickly in places. Well done. Love the old sound of the piano, too.
Nice job man. I just learned this version and still a tad shaky at the very end but you really nailed the trio. Not sure how you can play those octive jumps that fast. And as far as i heard, no mistakes...very good job.
Oh dear what ? His Tempo might be theoretically out...may be a little BUT....by far the most professional and capable version on RUclips. Kep up the good work
thanks for your comment. yeah, i did memorize it. I memorize every piece i learn, but automatically. I have no problem in memorizing pieces. I like yours too
@Grasshoppa065 In my opinion, when the piece modulates, it becomes harder, although if you've mastered the first two sections then it won't take you too long to learn. A good thing about this is once you've learned it, it'll pretty much play itself so long as you've taught your finger muscles to remember where to position them, unlike for example the entertainer, where you often need more concentration even though you've learned it, because of the difficult octaves. Hope this helps :D
quality 2006 youtube vids right here
I think having an older piano like the one you have makes the piece have a more authentic quality; it gives it that old ragtime sound. Good job!
I've been enjoying this for 16 years! Since it was posted!
God everyone commenting that the piano is out of tune get a life. It has a beautiful old Saloon feel to it.
Played fantastic!
What a great rendition of Scotty Joplin's"Maple Leaf Rag"..Thanks for performing this classic..Evanissimo.
Really enjoyed your rendition. It felt like I was in a saloon drinking a whiskey.
this is the exact speed with which ragtime needs to be played. Not too slow and not ridiculously fast like some others do. Wonderful
i wish my piano were that old and sound like that. it's perfect for ragtime
I love this clip. Everything about it is soooo right. The sound, the musical performance, the look--it's all so good.

One of the best renditions on youtube, practice and a keen ear equals 100% payoff
I love that he used that type of piano it almost sound like a harpsichord. Great job, guy!
This always makes me smile.
Great technique! Smooth and flowing without any "pounding," playing a song that almost requires "choppiness." You've got superior touch, and played the entire piece without nary a misplaced finger!

wow nice job!!... the best maple leaf rag ive heard here.... and the piano is also awesome, it feels like your in 70's
This has to be the best playing of this song I've seen yet with precision timing. Great job!
And wonderfully relaxed whilst playing.
I love your work! I hope you are still perfecting your piano skills for you are very talented.
dude i think this is the first maple leaf rag's performance i see that is WELL played!
it sounds great! =) honestly i think it IS the best performance of this piece I've seen on youtube ;)
Nice one! I wanted to see someone playing this piece and picked yours because you just looked like you knew what you were doing. The piano itself is perfect as well.
This Kid is a Master Pianist! Hope he uploads more.
I still think this is the best performance of the MLR on RUclips.
Finally someone who isn't racing thru this song. This is a dance song and everybody else that plays it must think they sold Red Bull at speak easys.
are you kidding me? the old fashioned out of tune piano makes ragtime so much better! :D
The mind of a piano player that can play like that is just shear “Genius”
I love the sound of this piano
Like it -- specially when you slow it down in introduction to a new sequence: well done sir.
Love the old fashioned metronome on top of your piano. Great job!
Wow I haven't watched this video since 2007, when I was in High School, learning this piece. Great performance. Hope all is going great for you in 2020. Thanks for the inspiration

Best homemade performance I´ve seen so far! Favorite, pal!
That piano is perfect for ragtime
Well done!! Friendly greetings from Odessa, Ukraine
This is amazing. I am so envious of your fantastic talent!
That piano is like...a piece of Greek architecture.
this is fabulous! very few folks have ever been able to play this at that speed clean!
Good job Evan.
I sure wish I could learn to play that.
My mom used to have an old stand-up piano like that when I was a kid.
What a fabulous Piano, Really awesome, Excellent Piano Piece, your really excellent, you will go very very far.
That was AWESOME! Perfect timing on every note and the sound of an old piano is far better than the new ones that are sold today......garbage.
Nicely done! LOVE the decreased tempo in just the right spots!
Awesome! Love those old player pianos!
Outstanding rendition of a real classic played at the correct pace! I have listened to the rest and you are the best. Congratulations again. Tim in Dublin.
GREAT!!! Love the changing tempos. JWB - Fair Oaks, CA
Technical mastery is excellent, and nice even bounce on the whole

Excellent job! Who needs a player piano when you can play as well as you did !!!!
Absolutely excellent! I never get tired of watching this video. This is my favorite Scott Joplin song and this is the best version I've seen on You Tube. I'd love to be able to just sit down at a piano and crank this out like this. AAA+++!!!
I wasn’t born when this was made
But how? This piece has no words to it... Sounds very interesting!
I always get so tense playing this piece.
Well played ! You have captured the Ragtime sound superbly.
Skill man skill !
I like you interpretation! and nice piano too! the right kind to play "Jop's" music on!!!
Having dedicated my entire piano 'career' to playing this song half as well as that.. Jolly good show sir. Yes indeed.
The 'pie-ana' may be old, but its great! and its in tune, and so are you!! Nice job!
Very nicely done. Congrats. Someone I used to know would play this. It's a great tune. You did a very good job.
Great job man! Love that piano too!
I think I'm starting to love rag more than today's jazz
Wow, fantastic! I've got to hear you play the Pineapple Rag - record it immediately please! Thanks for posting!
Awesome job man. I loved the emotion you put into this. :D
very nice, very nice indeed, right sound, right piano...another youtube virtuoso.
10/10
Timing was perfect, not too slow or too fast. Just right, like baby bear's bed. :)
Loved it! I really like the sound of your piano and your a great player.

wow you're really good. im just starting to learn this, and its really helpful listening to you

Awesome! This is my favorite to play, but I can't hold a candle to you !!!
Very nicely done. It had speeded up quite a lot by the end, but the touch and style was spot on.
Incredible!
Great job!
Sounds awesome!
Great playing and a cool piano too.
Ah. I love this song. I learned how to play it about 2 years ago, and i must be getting rusty, because I still make mistakes playing it. Such a nice catchy tune.

I always fail trying to play Scott Joplin. :D
Well played - I like this piece

2 minutes 33 seconds. Probably take me a decade to play it like that.
Great performance, very good left-hand!
Great job! Your piano looks like it's from the Ragtime era and sounds good too.
