Cut Flower Garden | Successes & Failures of the 2020 season | Our Plan for Next Year

  • Like most cut flower farmers in America, the COVID lockdowns came just as we were starting our season. Our garden was a safe haven amid all the uncertainty and anxiety of those early lockdowns. We wish everyone could have a garden to retreat to!
2020 was a weird growing year for us, unlike any other we've had in the 5 years we've been doing this.
This recap recounts some of the failures and successes of the season and also has a bit about our plans for next year. Hint: we're changing it up!

You two are so fun. The wholesomeness of Christ emanates from you. The flowers are difficult competition for the beauty of your character. I subbed. Thank you for your cheerful happy gardening encouragement. Blessings. I always like to share the fourth commandment KJV says REMEMBER. It’s reminding us of Genesis 2:2&3. History reveals it was actually Constantine that thought to change the times and laws concerning Sabbath. He was a sun worshipper. Jesus is our example. Not rome.

If you search for it on RUclips you should be able to find some tutorials. We usually layer on some leaves/compost/mushroom mulch after clearing our beds in the fall, which serves as a weed barrier and also to enrich the soil. Just do light weeding as needed, and dig a hole with your trowel to plant the plants.

I think part of the problem people have had with dahlias, is planting them out so late. I had mine out in March after growing in pots for two weeks. They had alot of rain and I was started to regret my decision, but by early July I had them in full bloom. I also fed them compost pretty much every other week and once a week fertilizer. I did have to pull one due to a virus, and to make sure it didn't spread to anything else.
    They're still blooming, zone 7A.

Thanks for the recap! It made me feel better about some of the weather related failures of this past season! My Dahlias (120 varieties) were at least a month behind this year (late cold snap here too--Lancaster County, zone 6B). It was mid May till they were in the ground--two weeks later than planned. They are booming now though--it will be sad to see them freeze! My Zinnias also had a super year!! I have never used a planting for so long without powdery mildew! Then all three plantings got it bad at the same time several weeks ago. Certainly got my worth out of them though!! Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and plans! THANK YOU!

We planted ours February 1st this year, into a low tunnel that had been covered for several weeks to help the ground warm. We also put black plastic on the frozen ground before setting up the low tunnel to hopefully draw more heat into the ground. Seemed to work! It snowed on us the day we planted them!
